NHTSA investigations into the 2014 Lexus IS 350

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

1 investigation is still open.

EA21002 Opened 17 Sep 2021 Still open AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2014 Lexus IS 350

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2021723 55,683 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Recall 2020514 126,597 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, then engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: This recall is an expansion of recalls SRC R95/SRC R96 and SRC RA2/SRC RA3 (Transport Canada Recall Numbers 2020-005 and 2020-088). Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump.

SERVICE BRAKES

WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY, I NEEDED THE BRAKES TO BE APPLIED VERY RAPIDLY AS A VEHICLE CUT ME OFF AND IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES. UPON MY FULL AND RAPID PRESSING OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM BRAKING DID NOT APPEAR TO APPLY AS ON PREVIOUSLY VEHICLES I'VE HAD OR HAVE INCLUDING TWO LARGE SUV'S. BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED AND PRESSED WITH FULL AND COMPLETE FORCE TO THE POINT THAT IT NO LONGER WENT ANY FURTHER. CONTINUED IN MOTION, NO SLIDING, MINIMAL ABS KICKED IN. AND ACCIDENT DID OCCUR AS VEHICLE DID NOT STOP IN TIME. PRIOR TO AND SINCE THEN, I'VE PAID MORE ATTENTION TO THE PEDDLE PRESSURE AND LEVEL AND SURE ENOUGH, UNLESS I PREPUMP THE PEDDLE, THE PEDDLE MUST BE PRESSED BEYOND WHAT IS CONSIDERED STANDARD. IF I PREPUMP THE PEDDLE, THEN DRIVE, THE BRAKING IS ULTRA SENSITIVE. I URGENTLY NEED AN INVESTIGATION INTO WHAT IS GOING ON AS I AM PREPARED TO SELL THE VEHICLE BUT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL REVIEW, TEST, EXAMINE WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF SUCH A BRAKE PRESSURE FAILURE. IT IS REPEATABLE, BUT NEED TO KNOW WHO TO CONTACT. WHAT CAN BE DONE IMMEDIATELY?

STEERING

Having an issue with my 2014 lexus is350 steering..the steering feels notchy and grabs when going around curves..it does it when returning wheel back to straight position..and wheel has to be pulled back into straight position or it will keep pulling ..thats when it catches and causes the jerk in the steering.. Usually when driving a car It'll somewhat straighten itself smoothly.. I have taken it to repair shops to have alignment/ brakes/rotors done and nothing has helped this what so ever. I've seen many forums about this same issue.. why hasn't this been addressed ..its obviously a huge issue that's been ignored.. this car isn't old enough or with 89k miles on it to be experiencing these types of issues.. thanks in advance for looking into this!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2014 Lexus IS350 Destination Assist and Safety Connect stopped working. Lexus tech support has no clue on how to resolve this problem. They are telling customers to go to the dealership. This puts those in need of assistance or emergency that the SOS function of the vehicle to become nonresponsive. Including location of a accident or collision notification.

THERE IS AN URGENT SAFETY RECALL ON MY VEHICLE PUT OUT BY YOU GUYS STATING THE FUEL PUMP MUST BE REPLACED OR IT CAN CAUSE THE CAR TO SEIZE AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. I AM MILITARY STATIONED IN GERMANY AND THE LOCAL GERMAN LEXUS DEALERSHIPS ARE STATING THEY HAVE NO ACCESS TO THIS PART BECAUSE IT IS A US SPEC LEXUS. I HAVE CONTACTED LEXUS CORPORATE TO REQUEST THEY FED EX THE PART TO LEXUS GERMANY WHERE I LIVE TO BE REPLACED. THEY ARE SLOW ROLLING THIS AND IT HAS ALREADY BEEN A MONTH. IT SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS LONG. THIS IS A SERIOUS RECALL. IT'S NOT A HARD FIX. THEY NEED TO MAIL THE PART TO MY DEALER HERE IN STUTTGART GERMANY. WITH THE HIGH RATES OF SPEED DRIVEN HERE IN GERMAN THE LIABILITY FOR THIS IS HUGE. THE SAFETY RECALL STATES THAT THE CAR COULD FAIL AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. AND HERE IN GERMANY THERE ARE HIGHER MINIMUM SPEED LIMITS. THIS SHOULD NOT REQUIRE ME TO CONSTANTLY EMAIL AND CALL LEXUS BACK IN THE STATES FOR THE PART TO BE MAILED HERE. THIS IS AN URGENT RECALL YET LEXUS IS NOT PRIORITIZING MY REQUEST WHATSOEVER. I NEED HELP. PLEASE.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. THE WIPERS 'FROZE' IN THE UP POSITION. I HAD TO WORK THE WIPER CONTROL INSIDE THE CAR 6-10 TIMES TO GET THE WIPERS TO WORK AGAIN. AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING THE WIPERS STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. THE WIPERS ONLY WORKED INTERMITTENTLY AND ONLY IF I KEPT WORKING THE SWITCH. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL LEXUS DEALERSHIP AND THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING "WIPER RELAYS SHORTING" CAUSING THE WIPERS NOT TO WORK.

WHEELS

I PURCHASED A 2014 LEXUS IS 350 F SPORT FROM FORT WORTH BROTHERS, LLC/ALFA ROMEO FIAT IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS ON JULY 20, 2018. I NOTICED THE NEXT DAY WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THAT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, THERE IS A "RUMBLING/GRINDING" NOISE AND THE CAR WAS HARD TO STOP. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY AND TOLD THEM. THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG AND THAT THEY RESURFACED THE ROTORS. WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP, I CONTINUED TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES. I ALSO TOLD THEM THAT THE CAR "SHIMMIED/SHAKING" AND "VIBRATED" VERY BADLY WHILE DRIVING AND THAT THE CAR NEEDED NEW TIRES. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD PUT NEW TIRES ON THE CAR, WHEN, IN FACT, THEY HAD NOT. I CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR RIDING WITH A "SHIMMY/SHAKING" FEEL WHILE CRUISING AT 30-40 MILES PER HOUR. I FINALLY TOOK THE CAR TO SEWELL LEXUS ON AUGUST 1, 2018. SEWELL DIAGNOSED THE BRAKES AND SAID THE ROTORS WERE "WARPED" AND ALFA ROMEO FIAT HAD PUT AFTERMARKET BRAKES PADS ON THE CAR. SEWELL LEXUS RESURFACED THE ROTORS AND THE GRINDING NOISE IS BETTER, BUT STILL NOT 100% BECAUSE OF THE AFTERMARKET BRAKES PAIDS ON THE CAR. I PAID $190 OUT OF MY POCKET TO HAVE THE ROTORS RESURFACED AFTER HAVING ONLY PURCHASED THE CAR 2 WEEKS PRIOR. I ASKED ALFA ROMEO FOR REIMBURSEMENT AND THEY REFUSED. THEY ALSO REFUSE TO PUT THE CORRECT BRAKE PADS ON THE CAR AND THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE THE TIRES. I RESIDE IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS BUT WORK IN ARLINGTON, TEXAS, SO I DRIVE 20 MILES TO WORK ONE WAY EVERUDAU. I HAVE MADE NUMEROUS, REPEATED REQUESTS TO ALFA ROMEO TO HAVE THESE PROBLEMS CORRECTED, BUT THEY REFUSE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET FOR THESE ITEMS ESPECIALLY SINCE I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR ON JULY 20, 2018.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 LEXUS IS 350. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHILE DRIVING, THE CONTACT NOTICED A SULFUR ODOR IN THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HENNESSY LEXUS OF ATLANTA (5955 PEACHTREE INDUSTRIAL BLVD, ATLANTA, GA 30341 (770) 457-6800) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN BACK TO HENNESSY LEXUS OF ATLANTA WHERE THE DEALER STATED THAT SCREWS WERE MISSING BY THE EXHAUST AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF SULFUR WAS NOTICED IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE ODOR WAS NORMAL. WHILE DRIVING, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO INCREASE THE SPEED AND THE SULFUR ODOR BECAME STRONGER. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT BECAME ILL AND HAD TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER TO VOMIT. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO HENNESSY LEXUS OF GWINNETT (3383 SATELLITE BLVD, DULUTH, GA 30096 (770) 680-1000) WHERE IT WAS ALSO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THE ISSUE WAS A FUEL CHANGE. THE CONTACT WAS THEN ADVISED TO GET A SECOND OPINION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2014 IS 350 F SPORT ON AUGUST 29, 2014. ON OR ABOUT SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 AS I WAS DRIVING HOME, SOMETHING HIT MY WINDSHIELD AND WITHIN 24 HOURS THE CRACK HAD SPREAD DEMANDING REPLACEMENT. I PAID $1800. TO REPLACE WITH LEXUS CERTIFIED WINDSHIELD AROUND THE 1ST OF OCTOBER. ON OCTOBER 10, 2014 AS I WAS TRAVELLING HOME I HEARD A SLIGHT TAP. BY NOON ON SATURDAY, THE CRACK WAS BEYOND REPAIR. I HAVE HAD THIS NEW CAR LESS THAT 2 MONTHS AND I AM HAVING TO REPLACE ITS WINDSHIELD FOR THE SECOND TIME. I HAVEN'T EVEN RECEIVED THE NEW LICENSE PLATES YET. I AM ALMOST 65 YEARS OLD AND HAVE OWNED 10 CARS AND THIS IS MY FIRST CRACKED WINDSHIELD EXPERIENCE. I AM THINKING THAT EITHER THE VEHICLE HAS A DESIGN FLAW, OR MORE LIKELY THE WINDSHIELD HAS A DESIGN FLAW. THE REPAIR SERVICE CONFIRMED THAT THE IS SEEMS TO EXPERIENCE AN INORDINATE NUMBER OF WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENTS. EVEN THE DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED NUMEROUS IS WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENTS. AT $1800 PER REPLACEMENT, THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
