ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Me and my wife purchased a vehicle from a private seller to use for personal commute. A month later we started to notice more issue were occurring with the car then stated from the seller. I took it to an auto body shop to get it inspected and possibly serviced and upon that inspection the clerk stated that there was a milage adjustment done to the vehicle. We contacted the seller to try and return the vehicle and receive our money back, but the dealer refused and requested us to resell it.

2009 Mercury Mariner North Chesterfield, VA 1 injured

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

This is an update to the complaint from June- Because I have to compensate manually for the electric power steering, I’ve aggravated upper back injuries and strained hip muscles I incurred from work. I have to attend physical therapy for those injuries now, but it’s useless if my only mode of transportation prolongs my recovery.—— My 2009 Mercury Mariner’s steering wheel started locking up 3 months ago, and it’s hard to get the steering wheel and the tires to agree on one direction. I looked up the make and model to see if there was a safety recall for it and there was, but my VIN wasn’t included in the recall campaign, even though it fits the criteria exactly. ///Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured August 18, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.

2009 Mercury Mariner Racine, WI

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

My SUV was part of a recall due to the electronic power steering failing. My SUV was allegedly repaired by the cheapest of the three available options (computer reset or some such process). I bought my SUV in 2020. The electronic power steering slowly started going out intermittently and then more frequently over time, but is now completely out. The dealer tested my SUV and stated that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. They claim that the problem has nothing to do with the recall, but I don't believe them. My issue is the exact same issue that prompted the recall in the first place. I should not have to pay for a failed recall repair. I think it's possible that the original dealership faked the repair, or simply chose the cheapest (but not proper) option to save themselves time and money. My shoulder is now damaged due to driving without power steering for so long. I need an honest evaluation of my vehicle and an investigation into whether or not the original dealer performed the proper repair. I would assume that the issue wouldn't come back if it had been repaired properly the first time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Electronic Power Steering System, which was part of a previous recall, and was allegedly fixed, but continues to experience the same loss of power steering. This is a continual problem, meaning that it is not a one time incident. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection at any time. When the power steering goes out while driving, the steering wheel jerks to one side, and feels like a lock-up. The vehicle is still drivable, but can be dangerous in a situation where attempting to avoid an obstacle, could result in an inability to do so, because the maneuvers are being executed for a vehicle with power steering, so when it goes out, those same corrections will not successfully avoid a collision. The dealership is aware of the problem. They did a system check and insist that the steering column needs to be replaced, and that it has nothing to do with the previous recall, but it is exactly the same problem involved with the recall, therefore I do not believe they are differing issues. I believe the initial recall repair was unsuccessful, or the wrong fix. There were three or four options for fixing the issue. There are no warning lights that come on prior to the power steering going out, but a click can be heard however, at the exact moment when the mechanism for the power steering goes out. The same click can be heard when the vehicle is started and the power steering does come on. It usually comes on when it is cold outside. It will then go out once the car gets warm. I bought the car in January of 2000, and I did not experience the issue for a few months. When it did start happening, it was only once in a while - maybe every few months. The problem started happening more frequently with time, with the current status being that the power steering is predominantly not working.

2010 Mercury Mariner Long Beach, CA

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

When the weather is hot (close to 100 degrees or more) and I am driving with the a/c - my vehicle on 3 occasions will not start after parking the vehicle and trying to restart it. The red padlock sign blinks and it won't start. At first it is trying to turnover but then will continually sound worse and all other warning lights go haywire. I leave the car alone for half a day and it starts up again like nothing happened. On the fourth occasion, the car stopped while driving, just a quiet shutdown and the car glided. This time it did not work for over 24 hours and then started up again like nothing happened. Multiple mechanics and also the dealership cannot figure out the problem because by the time i have it towed to shop, it works again. They did a full check on the car and cannot find anything wrong and there were no diagnostic codes. This issue happens when the weather is hot and poses a safety concern as now it is shutting off while driving and I become stranded each time. (First incident happened 8/25/18, last incident 5/14/22) Total of 4.

VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSES POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE WHILE DRIVING. IF THE IGNITION KEY IS CYCLED THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MAY FUNCTION AGAIN. THE AFFECTED COMPONENT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (PSCM) WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN. A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS IN 2014, HOWEVER ONLY THE SOFTWARE WAS UPDATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT IN FOR REPAIR. THE MALFUNCTIONING COMPONENTS WERE NOT REPLACED AND THE ISSUE HAS RETURNED.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

THE CAR WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD (A CITY STREET, NOT A HIGHWAY) AND A TRIANGULAR LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH, ALONG WITH A MESSAGE TO STOP SAFELY. THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN AND I HAD TO COAST INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS HAD HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY AND I HAD PAID A DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE HYBRID COOLING PUMP. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THIS PART HAD BEEN RECALLED AND WAS REIMBURSED BY THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE ORIGINAL REPAIR. THE SAME PART HAS FAILED AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, BUT UPON CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER, THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE THE PART AGAIN.

FORD'S RECALL "CODE 14S19" ON 2005-2008 MARINER HYBRIDS AND ESCAPE HYBRIDS SHOULD COVER ALL OF THESE HYBRIDS BUT IT HAS EXCEPTIONS! FORD HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON *SOME* OF THE 2005-2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS AND *SOME* OF THE CORRESPONDING MERCURY MARINER HYBRIDS. HOWEVER THEY ARE REFUSING TO ISSUE A RECALL ON MY PARTICULAR 2008 MARINER HYBRID (WHICH IS EXHIBITING THE ELECTRONIC OVERHEATING PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL WHERE THE STOP SAFELY NOW COMES ON AND THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER). THEY ARE REFUSING TO FIX MY MARINER JUST BECAUSE THE VIN NUMBER DOES NOT MATCH THE PARTICULAR MANUFACTURING LOT COVERED BY THE ORIGINAL FORD RECALL - THOUGH MY SUV DOES FALL IN THE DATE RANGE MENTIONED IN THE RECALL) I AM CERTAIN THIS RECALL SHOULD COVER MORE HYBRID SUV THAN FORD HAS ADMITTED TO, AND SINCE THE MARINERS HAD A VERY LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN, IT IS LESS LIKELY THAT THERE WIL BE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS DUE TO THIS VERY SERIOUS LIFE THREATENING ISSUE - AND I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS INCLUDING ON NHTSA. FORD SHOULD EXPAND THIS RECALL TO INCLUDE ALL DEFECTIVE FORD ESCAPES AND MARINER HYBRIDS BEFORE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS START OCCURRING AS A RESULT OF VEHICLES SHUTTING OFF DURING OPERATION BECAUSE OF EITHER DRIVE ELECTRONICS OVER HEATING DUE TO A BAD COOLANT PUMP, (AND POSSIBLY OTHER CAUSES?). ----RELEVANT RECALL-- NHTSA VEHICLE SAFETY RECALLS RECALL NUMBER 14V526000 RECALL DATE 09/03/2014 COMPONENT HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM FORD CONTACT NUMBER FOR RECALLS 1-866-436-7332.
