The worst model year for it is 2008.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH, he had to hard brake, however, afterward while depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was diagnosed as a hydraulic control unit (HCU) failure. The contact was informed that the HCU needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was not repaired as the parts were on backorder. The contact stated that he discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the VIN nor the Year/Make/Model was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that contact to call the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.

While driving vehicle brakes all of sudden go to the floor, no pedal response. This has happened a couple of times without warning. Once when I was approaching an intersection and light changed. My brakes all of the sudden went to the floor and I had to downshift and cut my wheels toward the curb to stop from crashing. Then a couple days later attempting to get it to mechanic it was fine and pumped properly. I wrote it off as a fluke. Then a few months later it happened again. My mechanic can't seem to find the issue and has charged me for new brakes, new master cylinder, new brake line, and another part for the abs power assistant. My car still continues to have this brake malfunction on and off. Somebody is going to end up getting hurt. This obviously is some kind of part defect. Please help!
NHTSA complaint #11495961 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
Driving downhill after dropping my children off at school heard a loud popping noise and brake pedal fell to the floor. Total loss of brakes. Coasted to the side off the road narrowly avoiding busy intersection. Vehicle was looked at by mechanic, traced to faulty ABS Sensor. Serious safety hazard— Recall must be issued immediately to prevent accidents and injuries!

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while attempting to apply the brake, an excessive amount of pressure was needed to depress the brake pedal before the vehicle stopped. The contact stated that the brake pedal went to the floor. The contact had taken the vehicle to a certified mechanic who was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

Brake pedal went to floor on my 10 Mariner, slid into intersection, no warning lights came on, checked for any fluid leaks and there were none. This is 2nd time it has happened and is extremely dangerous! Believe, like others that it is the ABS control. Ford should fix this immediately!

Second time the power brake pedal assembly has failed. The assembly failed in 19th February 2013 and had to be replaced by Fremont Ford. The power brakes failed completely and it had to be towed in. The part is BM6Z-2455-A. The Power brake assembly electronics failed again in January 26 and I have to drive it into the dealership with failing brakes. I was informed that the part is no longer manufactured and is unavailable from Ford. Failure of brake electronics in this hybrid represents a hazard if the brakes fail from failing electronics and the car is unable to stop. We are currently searching for part from a scrapped vehicle. The car is currently at Livermore Ford 1-925-273-7814. I think that the car should be recalled and defects in power brake module investigated and redesigned part should be installed before other cars brakes fail.

Couple weeks back, significant other encountered issue with brake signal coming on and needed to pretty much press the brakes to the floor to get it to brake. Took it to a nearby shop and they weren't familiar with the car, so they recommended to bleed the brakes according to error code and online. Signal went away for a bit. Signal came back with no immediate brake issue. Took to the dealership and they replaced some parts which also made the signal disappear for now. The parts were: Booster brake (a booster asy - brake), a bush, a module. Assuming the part replacement effectively hid the issue like a brake bleed. Few days later while driving about 40mph later the brake signal came on, wasn't touching the brakes at the time. Went to brake and they weren't reacting normally and wasn't braking. Had to also pretty much press hard on the pedal and get the pedal to the floor to break. Pulled off to a side road and restarted the car. Issue disappeared upon restart. Assuming something that controls the brake booster turns off.

I lost all braking ability and the pedal goes to the floor. This is a Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Ford Escape Hybrid issue, it doesn't affect the non-hybrid models. Ford knows about this as there are hundreds and hundreds of complaints online about it and it's a $5000+ fix. I have not been able to drive my Mariner Hybrid since 2018.

2008 MERCURY MARINER. THE VEHICLE SPORADICALLY AND INTERMITTENTLY BRAKES WHILE DRIVING AND ACCELERATING. THIS WAS A REPORTED ISSUE MANY YEARS AGO ON THESE CARS BUT FORD NEVER ISSUED A RECALL EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BRAKING ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IF YOUR BRAKES WITHOUT WARNING LOCK UP. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER AND FORD CORPORATE AND THEY WERE OF NO HELP. I ALSO FILED AN INCIDENT REPORT WITH FORD CORPORATE #CAS31601808.
NHTSA complaint #11414571 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
DRIVING, COMING TO A STOPLIGHT, THE BRAKES SUDDENLY FAILED, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. PUMPING I WAS ABLE TO GET JUST ENOUGH BRAKES TO STOP BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. THE SERVICE ABS AND EMERGENCY BRAKE SERVICE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AFTER THE NEAR COLLISION. I TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE HCU UNIT HAD FAILED. THIS IS A $4,000 PART THAT WE HAD ALREADY REPLACED AT 76,000 MILES,. THE NEW PART FAILED AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING ONLY 22,000 MILES LATER.
NHTSA complaint #11407375 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
MY VEHICLE HAD DIFFICULTY IN STOPPING, NEEDING THE PEDAL TO BE PRESSED ALMOST TO THE FLOOR BEFORE IT STOPPED. I CHANGED THE MASTER CYLINDER IN HOPES THAT IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM BUT IT DIDN'T. THE BRAKES PERIODICALLY WOULD WORK PROPERLY, BUT ONCE AGAIN THE PROBLEM WOULD RETURN. I STOPPED BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE 2008 MERCURY MILAN WAS RECALLED FOR THIS DEFECT, HOWEVER, MY 2008 MARINER WASN'T ON THE LIST TO BE RECALLED. THE DEALERSHIP ADDED THAT THE PARTS FOR THE REPAIR WAS ON BACK ORDER. I STILL DRIVE THE CAR BUT CAUTIOUS WHENEVER I NEED TO BRAKE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 MERCURY MARINER. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKE PEDAL REQUIRED ADDITIONAL BRAKE TRAVEL TIME TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH NEEDING THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V904000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) HOWEVER THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.

THE ABS HYDROLIC CONTROL UNIT HAS MALFUNCTIONED RESULTING IN FAULTY BRAKES AND DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. I HAVE TO PUT THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE GROUND TO GET ANY TYPE OF BRAKING TO BE DONE. THIS TAKES EXTRA SECONDS THAT COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT IF I HAD TO SUDDENLY BRAKE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AND MANY MARINERS AND ESCAPES HAVE IDENTICAL PROBLEMS. I WOULD LIKE MY VIN TO BE ADDED TO THE RECALL LIST TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED.
NHTSA complaint #11391024 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR LEAVES YOU WITH NO BRAKES. THIS IS DUE TO THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL MODULE FAILING SAME AS OTHER ONES IN FORD AND MERCURY'S BEING RECALLED. THIS IS TERRIBLE AND DANGEROUS AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP EVEN THOUGH THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS WITH MARINERS AND ESCAPES ARE HAVING IDENTICAL PROBLEMS. DOES MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THEY RECALL THESE? THIS HAPPENED WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65MPH. TERRIBLE AND DANGEROUS.

RE:NHTSA IDENTIFIER 19V904 FORD INTERNAL REFERENCE NUMBER:19S54 ALTHOUGH MERCURY MARINERS ARE NOT LISTED IN THIS RECALL, MY 2008 MERCURY MARINER HAS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE, STICKING ABS VALVE. FORD WILL NOT RECOGNIZE MY VEHICLE AS PART OF THIS RECALL. I HAVE HAD 2 DIFFERENT CERTIFIED MECHANICS WORK ON THE VEHICLE AND BOTH MECHANICS HAVE INSTALLED NEW BRAKE BOOSTERS, BRAKE PADS AND MASTER CYLINDERS. THE RESULTS FROM THEIR WORK DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF SOFT BRAKES. THE PROBLEM BEGAN WHEN I MADE AN ABRUPT STOP WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. THE BRAKES WERE NEVER FULLY FUNCTIONAL AFTER THAT. I BELIEVE THE SITUATION WITH MY MARINER IS IDENTICAL TO THE ISSUE IDENTIFIED IN THE NHTSA IDENTIFIER 19V904. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT MERCURY MARINERS SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS FORD RECALL.

MY DAUGHTER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO FAULTY BRAKES. WE HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE REPAIRS AT THREE DIFFERENT SHOPS, THE LAST TWO BEING AT FORD. THE FIRST TWO SHOPS COULD NEVER GET THE BRAKES RIGHT. FORD FINALLY GOT THEM TO WORK FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THEY WENT OUT AGAIN. FORD HAD THE CAR FOR ANOTHER MONTH- IT TAKES MONTHS EVERY TIME. PAID ANOTHER $2445. AND STILL NO BRAKES. HAVE CONTACTED FORD CORPORATE AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP OR GIVE ME DOCUMENTATION TO THAT EFFECT. FORD CASES ARE CAS-28178357 AND CAS-27857368. I HAVE TWO OTHER MARINERS AND THIS ONE JUST ISN'T RIGHT. PLEASE ADVISE MY OPTIONS. I DON'T WANT TO SELL OR TRADE THIS WITH A PROBLEM THAT COULD POSSIBLY HURT OR KILL SOMEONE. THANKS!

WHEN USING THE BRAKES THERE'S A LOSS OF ABOUT HALF OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND MOST LIKELY THE ABS SYSTEM. THE PART RETAILS FOR $1,747.32. THE PROBLEM FROM TALKING TO MECHANICS AND SEARCHING IS APPARENTLY STICKING VALVE(S) WHICH IN TURN MAKES THE BRAKE FLUID BY-PASS HALF OF THE SYSTEM. IN OTHER WORDS YOU ONLY HAVE THE USE OF PART OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. OUR CAR HAS 170K MILES BUT THAT'S ~ 90% HIGHWAY MILES, WE BOUGHT IT ~6YRS AGO WITH 15K MILES, WHICH MEANS THE BRAKES DON'T GET THAT MUCH USE. THE REAR SHOES WERE JUST REPLACED FOR THE 1ST TIME @ 170K AND THE FRONT PADS HAVE BEEN DONE ONCE. FORD CARES SO MUCH ABOUT THE LIVES OF PEOPLE DRIVING THEIR CARS THAT THEY CONTINUE TO SELL THE SAME PART (MODULATOR VALVE - FORD (9L8Z-2C346-C)) WITHOUT ANY ENGINEERING CHANGES/UPDATES, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ACROSS CAR LINES AND EVEN TRUCKS. THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL, #19S54 FOR SELECT 2006-10 FORD FUSION, MERCURY MILAN AND LINCOLN MKZ VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT THE SAME ISSUE, "A NORMALLY CLOSED VALVE INSIDE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT MAY STICK OPEN, WHICH COULD RESULT IN EXTENDED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL, POTENTIALLY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.". AN INTERESTING POINT IN THE RECALL IS THIS: "THE SYSTEM WILL BE PRESSURE-FLUSHED WITH DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID AND THE DOT 3 RESERVOIR CAP WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW DOT 4 CAP." OUR VEHICLE HAS A DOT3 CAP, IS DOT3 WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM WITH "STUCK OR SLOW-RESPONDING VALVES" PER RECALL, AND DOT4 KEEPS VALVES FROM STICKING OR BECOMING SLOW ACTING BECAUSE OF THE VISCOSITY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2? FROM AMSOIL "DOT 3 IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE USED IN CARS AND TRUCKS TODAY. DOT 4, HOWEVER, IS GAINING POPULARITY DUE TO WIDESPREAD USE OF ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEMS AND TRACTION CONTROL, WHICH BENEFIT FROM DOT 4 FLUID?S LOWER VISCOSITY." THIS: "AS OF 2006, MOST CARS PRODUCED IN THE U.S. USE DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID." EXCEPT FOR FORD APPARENTLY.

OUR SON IS DRIVING THIS CAR WIT 90K MILES ON IT. HAD 1200 OF BREAK WORK DONE AFTER FEELING LIKE THE PEDAL WAS GOING DOWN TOO FAR AND HE COULD NOT STOP WELL AND THEN IT ENDED UP NEEDING A NEW EHCU TO THE TUNE OF 2600$. THIS IS A VERY CRITICAL COMPONENT AND FROM WHAT I READ, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. IT SHOULD NOT FAIL AND FORD AS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. I CALLED FORD TO SEE IF THERE COULD BE ANY ASSISTANCE AND THEY SAID NO. GOOD CARS ARE BEING JUNKED FOR THIS REASON AND IT IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE.
NHTSA complaint #11367005 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
ABS LIGHT ,REGEN BRAKES DISABLED AND CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM MESSAGE COMES ON AT ANYTIME WHILE DRIVING. LOSE BRAKING POWER, CAUSING DRIVER TO PUSH BRAKE VERY HARD TO STOP AND BRAKE PEDAL SOMETIMES GOES TO THE FLOOR. WHEN CAR STOPS SOMETIMES IT WON'T RESTART FOR DAYS. IT HAS A NEW BATTERY. COOLANT CODE COMES ON ALSO AND THE CAR ISN'T RUNNING HOT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND NEEDS A RECALL. OTHER THAN THAT THE CAR RUNS GREAT.
