Owners have filed 231 complaints
about the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara with NHTSA between 2006 and 2026.
The largest single group is the airbags.
Across this model's run it ranks 2 of 13 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 100
Against the median year of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 60
11.7% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 60
35% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
How 2006 compares with every other Suzuki Grand Vitara
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA crash tests
The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own
photographs and star ratings.
These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA
rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that
ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do
not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

NHTSA investigations into the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Occupant Classification System Failure
Suzuki Motor of America is conducting a safety recall to remedy the occupant classification system's (OCS) sensor mats in approximately 193,936 model year 2006-2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4 vehicles (see NHTSA recall 13V-405 for more details). The sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat can develop an electrical circuit disconnection as a result of repeated flexing of the seat from use of the seat.According to Suzuki, when the failure occurs, the OCS system, by design, will not suppress the frontal passenger air bag for a seated child or small-stature adult.A deploy...
Recalls on the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

SEATS
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kizashi and 2006-2013 Grand Vitara vehicles. The front passenger leather seat may shrink due to high humidity and high temperature. As a result, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat may not accurately detect if an adult or child is occupying the seat.
Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, an incorrect classification may result in the passenger frontal air bag deploying even if there is a child in the front passenger seat, increasing their risk of injury.
18V667000
STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara vehicles. The power steering pump belt tension adjuster pulley has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate, causing pieces of the pulley to break off.
Risk: Broken pieces of the pulley can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, causing the drive belt to come off, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
13V405000
AIR BAGS
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.
Risk: Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.
10V250000
STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:PUMP
SUZUKI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR MODEL YEAR 2006 GRAND VITARA AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 XL-7 VEHICLES. THE TENSION ADJUSTER PULLEY FOR THE DRIVE BELT THAT OPERATES THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR (IF EQUIPPED) HAS AN OUTER PORTION THAT IS MADE OF PLASTIC. REPEATED HEAT STRESS CAN CAUSE THE PLASTIC MATERIAL TO DETERIORATE AND PIECES OF THE PULLEY CAN BREAK OFF.
Risk: BROKEN PIECES OF THE PULLEY CAN GET CAUGHT BETWEEN THE PULLEY AND THE DRIVE BELT, CAUSING THE DRIVE BELT TO COME OFF AND RESULTING IN THE DRIVER NEEDING INCREASED EFFORT TO STEER THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
07V554000
POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 114, 'THEFT PROTECTION. ' THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER "PARK" LOCK FUNCTION MAY BE INOPERATIVE DUE TO A STICKING SHIFT LOCK ARM. THE SHIFT LEVER MAY BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF "PARK" WITH THE KEY REMOVED AND WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL.
Risk: THIS CAN GIVE RISE TO INCREASED INCIDENTS OF CRASHES RESULTING FROM THE ROLLAWAY OF PARKED VEHICLES AS A RESULT OF INADVERTENTLY MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER FROM THE "PARK" POSITION WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED.
05V548000
POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RETAINER REAR DRIVE SHAFT MAY CRACK AND THE GEARS MAY GET STUCK DUE TO OIL LEAKAGE BY THE RETAINER.
Risk: THIS CAN LEAD TO THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL GEARS LOCKING UP AND THE VEHICLE MAY BECOME DISABLED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 20191299,772 units in Canada
Airbag
Issue: On certain vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) may not work properly. This could cause the airbag system not to turn off the airbag when an infant or child is seated in the front passenger seat. This could also cause the passenger seat belt reminder to activate when the seat is empty. Note: This problem only affects vehicles with leather seats. Safety Risk: In a crash, an airbag that deploys in front of an infant or child increases the risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Suzuki service provider to have the front passenger seat cushion replaced.
Recall 2018549147 units in Canada
Steering
On certain vehicles, the tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt which operates the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor (if equipped) has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate and pieces of the pulley can break off. Broken pieces of the pulley can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, causing the drive belt to come off and resulting in the driver needing increased effort to steer the vehicle. This situation could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the power steering pump drive belt tension adjuster pulley. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2010-197.
Recall 201330549,125 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, the Occupant Classification System may malfunction, causing the airbag warning lamp to illuminate, and could fail to disable the passenger airbag if a child were seated in the front passenger seating position. This could result in an unwarranted airbag deployment in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to a child seated in the front passenger seat. Note: In this situation, the "PASS AIR BAG OFF" light would fail to illuminate, regardless of if a child or adult is seated in the front passenger seat. Correction: Vehicles will receive special extended warranty coverage of 10 years or 200,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) from the date the vehicle was originally placed into service. Under this special coverage program, vehicles which experience this condition will have the occupant detection mat replaced.

On certain vehicles, the ignition/park shift interlock system may become inoperable. This can allow the shifter to be moved out of the PARK position with the ignition key removed. This could allow the vehicle to roll away, possibly causing property damage and/or personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the shift lock module on the shift lever assembly.
Recall 2005378237 units in Canada
Powertrain
On certain vehicles, the rear differential left bearing retainer may be cracked due to a manufacturing defect. A cracked retainer can allow oil leakage from the rear differential. With continued use, this can lead to the rear differential gears becoming locked and the vehicle disabled. Correction: Dealers will replace the left-side rear differential retainer.

MY WIFE AND I JUST LEFT MY MOTHER'S CONDOMINIUM PREMISES, I TURNED RIGHT ON GENEVA AVENUE IN SAN FRANCISCO. AS I STARTED TO ACCELERATE AT 23 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR TOOK ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN! THE CAR TOOK OFF, THE ENGINE REVVED UP, BY IT SELF AND SPED UP, EVEN ME MY RIGHT FOOT STEPPING AS HARD AS I COULD ON THE BRAKES! I STEERED THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT I NEEDED TO HIT THE BUMPER OF A PARKED CAR IN ORDER TO STOP. IN MY OPINION, MY WIFE AND I WERE SUBJECTED BY THIS CAR INTO A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I LEFT A NOTE AND MY PHONE NUMBER ON THE WINDSHIELD OF THE CAR I HIT, APOLOGIZED, AND ASKED THE DRIVER TO CALL ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I THOUGHT THE FRIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE WAS OVER! AFTER I LEFT MY NOTE FOR THE DRIVER OF THE PARKED CAR I HIT, WE DECIDED TO PROCEED. AFTER HALF A BLOCK, THE ENGINE POWERED UP BY ITSELF, AGAIN, AND WAS LAUNCHING FORWARD. I MANAGED, WITH ALL THE FORCE I COULD MUSTER, TO STEP ON THE BRAKES AND STOP ON A RED ZONE. WE DECIDED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOMETOWN, 44 MILES AWAY. THE 2006 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA SHOULD BE EXAMINED THOROUGHLY BY THE MANUFACTURER IN MY OPINION, CORRECT THIS HUGE PROBLEM BEFORE IT KILLS. BETTER YET, IT SHOULD BE BOUGHT BACK BY THE MANUFACTURER. OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT BE DRIVING AT 45 MILES, NOT 23, BY THE SIDE OF THE CLIFF. I ADVISED SUZUKI USA ABOUT THIS. THE MATTER IS PENDING. I WAS TOLD NONCHALANTLY BY A RICHARD TRAVIS THAT THEY WILL HAVE THE VEHICLE EXAMINED. THEY WILL TRY TO 'DUPLICATE THE HARROWING EXPERIENCE. I DID NOT FEEL ANY COMPASSION AT ALL FROM SUZUKI.

WE HAVE HAD SEVERE HEADLIGHT ISSUES WITH THIS 2006 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA SINCE WE PURCHASED IT. THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE HEADLIGHTS CONTINUE TO MELT EVEN AFTER BEING REPLACED 3 TIMES! THE DEALERSHIP OR SUZUKI MOTORS HAVE BEEN OF ANY HELP AND OFFER ZERO ASSISTANCE WITH THE PROBLEM. A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE OF GRAND VITARA HEADLIGHT ISSUES WILL GET THOUSANDS OF RESULTS. I AM CONFIDENT THAT SUZUKI IS WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, BUT SIMPLY REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE BECAUSE IT WILL COST THEM MANY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS. MY HEADLIGHT CAUGHT FIRE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AND I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED DUE TO THEIR FAULTY EQUIPMENT. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT A GOV'T AGENCY NEEDS TO MAKE SUZUKI FIX. THIS COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND COULD BE FATAL IF HEADLIGHTS ARE BURSTING IN TO FLAMES. I SUGGEST ANYONE WHO HAS HEADLIGHT HARNESS SOCKETS THAT ARE MELTING...NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE! IT CAN AND WILL CATCH ON FIRE!!!

I bought this car used one year ago and have had to change the low beam lights twice and now they are out again. At night I drive with the high beams on and they are so weak no one can tell. Last month the engine started surging making the car try to take off wether in neutral, park or drive. I have to hold the brake very strongly to keep the car from taking off. This is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons and someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed because Suzuki will not acknowledge or fix this problem. This will be my last Suzuki product ever. ITS BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS WE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE AND ALWAYS GET THE RUN AROUND. ONE OF THE RECALL IS RELATED TO AIR BAGS AND DIFFERENTIAL TRAIN LOCKING DUE TO FAULTY SEAL. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN BY MY DAUGHTER FOR SCHOOL AND WE'VE NOW HAVE RESTRICTED HER FROM DRIVING THE VEHICLE CONCERNED FOR THESE ISSUES. WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUPPORT OR ASSISTANCE YOU MAY PROVIDE TO SOLVING THIS ISSUE.
