NHTSA investigations into the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Fuel Leak due to Suction Jet Pump Failure within Fuel Tank (Remedy Effectiveness of Recall 16V647)

On December 12, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ23-007 to investigate the remedy repair effectiveness and scope of Volkswagen (VW) recall 16V-647. Recall 16V-647 was issued on September 2, 2016, for a defective suction jet pump (SJP) inside the fuel tank. Failure of the SJP could lead to a fuel leak from the vehicle. This recall covered certain model year (MY) 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 passenger car vehicles. The recall remedy repair replaced SJP Version 1.0 with an improved version, Version 1.1. The SJP is designed to purge fuel from the evaporative emiss...

Vehicle Stalling - Manual Transmission

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has completed its review of a defect petition received on 14 August 2019 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect of the manual transmissions in Model Year (MY) 2019 Volkswagen (VW) GTI, Golf GTI and Jetta GLI vehicles. The stalling incidents cited occurred without warning as the vehicle slows to a stop or prepares to make a turn across traffic with the clutch pressed in and the vehicle in neutral. The hazard posed by a vehicle stalling event is manifested in the inability of the vehicle to move with the flow of surrounding traffic. Two factors...

Recalls on the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

23V604000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Sportwagen, 2019-2020 Golf GTI, and Jetta vehicles equipped with a conventional ignition switch. The ignition switch may fail, especially in high temperature environments.

Risk: Ignition switch failure can cause the electrical system to shut down and the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

22V815000

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan LWB, Golf Sportswagen A7, Golf Alltrack, Golf R GP, Audi Q3, Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Jetta NF, Jetta GLI, Golf GTI, Atlas, Golf A7, Audi A3, 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021 Atlas FL vehicles. The tire pressure monitoring system may not detect an air pressure loss in adequate time when deflating occurs among all four tires simultaneously. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Risk: An undetected sudden loss of pressure in all four tires increases the risk of a crash.

19V615000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:ANTI-THEFT:CONTROL MODULE

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."

Risk: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2024095 86,308 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, a seal for the suction jet pump inside the fuel tank could fail. As a result, fuel may flow directly into the evaporative emission control system (EVAP). If this happens, fuel could leak from the charcoal canister. Note: This problem could cause a fuel odor, the fuel nozzle to stop early and/or fuel to spill when refueling. Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the suction jet pump.

Recall 2021326 96,497 units in Canada

Fabrics

Issue: On certain models, the chrome layer could peel off of the trim located around the gear shift cover. If this happens, sharp edges can be created. Safety Risk: Exposed sharp edges can create the risk of a cut. Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will contact owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the gear shift cover trim frame.

Recall 2019423 117,306 units in Canada

Powertrain

Issue: On certain vehicles, a build-up of silicate on the shift lever switch could cause the transmission to detect that it is in the Park position when it isn't. This could allow the ignition key to be removed when the transmission is not in the Park position. If the parking brake is not applied, this could allow the car to roll away. Safety Risk: If the transmission position is not displayed correctly, a user may not know that the vehicle is not in the PARK position. If the parking brake is not applied, this could create a risk of a vehicle roll-away and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have a new shift lever micro switch and control unit installed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I own a vehicle built from two salvage vehicles: a 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen (VIN [XXX] - the body) and a 2019 VW GTI (VIN [XXX] - the engine, suspension, fuel tank/system, etc). The vehicle is registered and titled under the Sportwagen VIN. Safety Recall 20UF requires replacement of the suction jet pump to prevent risk of fire. The recall was performed on the Sportwagen prior to its crash, but not on the GTI. Since the Sportwagen no longer has it's original engine/fuel tank, but that from the GTI, this means my vehicle has the defective, unsafe part. Because the dealer service department goes by the registered body VIN, they refused to perform the recall. I called VWoA Customer Care, who advised me that they could not do anything, and that the dealer service department must request an exception from VWoA and inspect the vehicle. I have attempted reaching out to my two nearest VW dealers, including my regular dealer, and they have either refused to perform the recall, or refused to get back to me. One dealer even said I should perform the repair myself, and when I pressed for VW to perform the recall, he said he'd have to call his regional manager and call me back at the end of the week. While simply driving 75mph (speed limit during time of incident) on the highway, i heard a loud explosion sound and the sunroof had completely shattered and was blown upwards. Glass began and continued to fly off, creating a large hole, while trying to get to a stopping point. The was only very little shards of debris that had gotten inside the vehicle while driving, but had potential to put me and a passenger at risk of serious injury. No vehicles were close to mine that could have caused debris to hit the area and no other vehicles were affected. There was no cracks or chips in the glass prior to the incident. There is reason to believe that it is a manufacturing error or installation error prior to purchasing the vehicle in 2020. Supporting that, i have researched reports of other Volkswagen Golf GTI models dealing with the same or similar issues with the sunroof exploding upwards with zero cause or explanation. There has not been an inspection or investigation of the damage as is happened around 3:00pm on this date ( January 30th, 2026).

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS

The front collision brake assist goes on when there is no obstacle. It has given me obstacle warnings before, but this time it slammed on the brakes and brought me to a stop. This "safety" feature is going to get me rear ended. I have not taken it to a dealer because internet search shows me it is a widespread problem for which there is no fix. I would like it permanently disabled.

I HAVE A 2019 VOLKSWAGEN GTI 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. WHILE I WAS OUT RUNNING ERRANDS TO THE LOCAL FOOD STORE AND HARDWARE STORE, I CAME TO A COMPLETE AND FULL STOP AT A STOP SIGN. AT THIS TIME THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL WITH THE CLUTCH PEDAL DISENGAGED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED. I NOTICED THE CAR HAD A SOFT STALL. THIS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF ABOUT 6 TIMES. IT IS ALMOST AS IF THE CAR HAS THE AUTO STOP FEATURE THAT TURNS THE ENGINE OFF AT A FULL AND COMPLETE STOP BUT MY CAR IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH THAT OPTION. I FEEL AS IF THE ENGINE IS THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT IS CUTTING OFF. I ALSO FEEL IT COULD BE THE TRANSMISSION THINKING THAT THE CAR IS IN A DIFFERENT GEAR AND NOT ENOUGH RPMS TO SUSTAIN THAT GEAR. I ALSO FEEL IT COULD BE A VACUUM LEAK WHICH IS NOT SENDING THE RIGHT SIGNALS TO THE ENGINE COMPUTER OR SOMETHING ELSE. AT THE TIME OF THIS HAPPENING IT WAS SUNNY AND IN MID FIFTIES IN TEMPERATURE.

MY 2019 VW GTI-S IS EQUIPPED WITH A DSG TRANSMISSION. I WAS DRIVING IT IN MANUAL SPORT MODE ON THE FREEWAY ON SUNDAY 1 MARCH 2020. AFTER GETTING OFF OF THE FREEWAY AND ONTO THE CITY SURFACE STREETS, THE CAR STALLED WHEN I CAME TO A STOP. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE I HAD NOT TURNED OFF THE ENGINE START/STOP DEFEAT FEATURE OFF BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. ANOTHER 6-7 STALLS OCCURRED AS I DROVE THE CAR THE FEW MILES BACK HOME AFTER DROPPING OFF A FRIEND. THERE WERE 4-5 PREVIOUS INDIVIDUAL INCIDENTS PRIOR TO SUNDAY. ON MONDAY 2 MARCH WHILE I DROVE THE CAR HOME ON THE FREEWAY IN STOP AND GO COMMUTE TRAFFIC THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS; HOWEVER AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY THE CAR STALLED AGAIN 3 SEPARATE TIMES AFTER I CAME TO A FULL STOP AT THE SIGNALS AND STOP SIGNS LEADING TO MY HOME. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND I AM WORRIED SINCE THE PRINCIPAL DRIVER OF THIS CAR WILL EVENTUALLY BE MY WIFE. SHE IS OFTEN DRIVING ON THE STREETS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. IT IS EASY TO GET READ ENDED AS THE DRIVER IN BACK OF YOU EXPECTS YOU TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY AWAY FROM THE GREEN SIGNAL LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AFTER YOU HAVE STOPPED. IT TAKES TIME TO SHIFT THE GEAR LEVER BACK INTO NEUTRAL OR PARK TO START THE CAR AGAIN. SINCE I AM PUTTING IN THE "BREAK-IN" MILES ON THE CAR I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT SITUATION AND HAVE GOTTEN HONKED FOR NOT MOVING AWAY SWIFTLY FROM THE INTERSECTION AS ONE NORMALLY WOULD ON THE CITY STREETS. THE GTI CURRENTLY HAS 671 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I AM TAKING THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY AND HOPING THAT THEY WILL BUY IT BACK SO I CAN GET MY WIFE INTO A SAFER MODEL.

2019 WHITE GTI SE WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION PURCHASED ON 11/27/19 IN DALY CITY, CA. CURRENT MILEAGE ~ 2,300. CAR ENGINE SHUTS DOWN INTERMITTENTLY/ RANDOMLY AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN COMING TO A STOP, EITHER AT NEUTRAL OR IN 1ST GEAR OR REVERSE WITH CLUTCH FULLY ENGAGED. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS OVER TWO WEEKS AGO AFTER I SWITCHED DRIVING MODES FROM SPORT TO ECO MODE. THE ENGINE WOULD CONTINUOUSLY SHUT DOWN ALMOST EVERY TIME I CAME TO A STOP, TO THE POINT OF THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF CONTINUOUSLY AND UNABLE TO REMAIN ON AS I WAS PARKING MY CAR ON A HILL. I TOOK MY CAR OUT FOR A DRIVE A FEW HOURS LATER AND IT DROVE NORMALLY, UNTIL IT SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT WITH THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, AND MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN MY CAR IS WARMED UP AND AT NORMAL TEMPERATURES, USUALLY AFTER DRIVEN FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES. EVERY TIME IT'S HAPPENED, IT WAS ON CITY STREETS AND INTERSECTIONS. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FOLLOWING MORNING AND THEY RESET THE ECU, AND WERE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM. HAVEN'T HAD THE PROBLEM REAPPEAR UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO, AND WAS EVEN ABLE TO RECORD A VIDEO OF IT OCCURRING. MY CAR IS AT THE DEALER FOR THE SECOND TIME NOW FOR THE SAME PROBLEM.
