NHTSA investigations into the 2024 Acura MDX

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION:FRONT PASSENGER

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2021, 2023 Acura TLX, 2019-2024 RDX, 2017-2020, 2022-2026 MDX, 2017-2021, 2023, 2025 Honda Ridgeline, 2017-2022 Pilot, 2019-2021 Passport, 2018-2026 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Insight, 2019-2021 HR-V, 2018-2020 Fit, 2020-2022 CR-V Hybrid, 2017-2022 CR-V, 2017-2018, 2021 Civic Type R, 2017-2021 Civic hatchback, 2016-2020 Civic coupe, 2016-2022 Civic, 2017-2022 Accord Hybrid, and 2016-2022 Accord vehicles. The front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, which can cause the air bags to deploy unintentionally during a crash.

Risk: Air bags that deploy unintentionally during a crash increase the risk of injury.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Acura TLX, 2023-2025 Acura MDX, and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot vehicles. The brake pedal pivot pin was not secured properly, which can cause the pedal to shift out of position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment" and 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Risk: A brake pedal that shifts out of position can prevent the driver from applying the brakes as intended, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2026251 12,371 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Issue: On certain vehicles, the weight sensor for the front passenger seat may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the passenger-front airbag and knee airbag could deploy in a crash that doesn't require them to. Note: This recall is an expansion of Transport Canada recall no. 2024-059. If the weight sensor fails, the SRS warning light would turn on in the instrument panel. Safety Risk: An airbag system that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the passenger-front seat weight sensor.

Recall 2025318 15,574 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles, the brake pedal assembly may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the brake pedal could move and cause you not to be able to apply the brakes properly, or to apply the brakes unexpectedly. This could also cause the brake lights to turn on without pressing the brake pedal. Safety Risk: Reduced braking and/or braking unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, brake lights that turn on without the brake pedal being pressed could cause others not to recognize when the vehicle is braking or not braking and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the brake pedal assembly.

Recall 2025029 16,977 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem in the fuel injection electronic control unit could cause the engine to stall while driving. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the fuel injection electronic control unit software.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

on [XXX], I was trying to park under the shade of a tree when the vehicle suddenly surged forward, ran through the back of a big concrete dumpster retaining wall, pushed the dumpster at least 3 to 4 feet forward. It all happened so fast, I was left puzzled about why the brake failed and caused the accident and property damage. Luckily there was no personal injury to me nor anyone else, my car video showed that I narrowly missed 2 Hispanic young men standing near the dumpster ! Since the car is still under warranty, my plan was to get the car checked out by the dealership mechanic after the body shop finished with the $18,000 repair job. Then on 7/31/2025 I received a recall notice from Honda about BRAKE PEDAL PIVOT PIN may not have been staked during production. I immediately contacted State Farm and Honda. On 8/6/2025 A Honda representative, Mr. Noah, called and advised to have the car inspected by dealer for recall issue. I did not agree to it due to what I believed to be a conflict of interest : since the dealer is part of the same network with Honda ! Noah then suggested to get State Farm to request an EDR download of specific data providing insights into what happened before , during and after a collision. or I can order one myself. In accident cases involving vehicle recall, the manufacturer is considered a key party when it comes to investigation, why we consumer need to foot the bill knowing that ordering EDR is not assigned to a single party! It has been more than 3 months now since the accident, and my car is still sitting at the auto shop waiting for an EDR its data might have already been overwritten !! I have never heard from Honda again after 8/6/2025 !! They just ignored my phone calls, emails, accident video and photos totally. There were no warning lamps, message or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am reporting a potential safety defect involving the rear windshield glass on my Acura MDX. The rear windshield unexpectedly shattered while the vehicle was stationary, with no known impact or contact with an outside object. I was present when the glass shattered and immediately took multiple photographs and videos before the vehicle was moved. Based on what I observed, the glass appeared to break outward rather than from an outside object striking the vehicle. I later drove the vehicle from my home to the Acura dealership after being advised to do so. By the time the vehicle was inspected, portions of the shattered glass were understandably missing. The dealership later identified an area of missing glass as a possible “point of impact,” although I witnessed the event and there was no impact. I am submitting this complaint because I am concerned that the rear glass may have failed spontaneously and could represent a safety issue. Unexpected glass shattering could potentially occur while a vehicle is being driven and could startle a driver, expose occupants to broken glass, or impair visibility. I am also aware that Acura has previously issued technical service information regarding rear windshield glass on certain RDX vehicles shattering without external impact. I understand that my vehicle is an MDX and may not be covered by the same issue, but I believe the circumstances warrant documentation and review for a possible pattern.

Went to get into my 2024 Acura MDX parked car this morning temperature around 68 degrees and noticed the back window of my 2024 MDX had shattered out. There was a large section of glass missing and the glass looks as if it was pushed from the inside out. The vehicle had not been driven or started since the last evening. It seems as though this was a problem with prior Acura models in previous years. Went to the dealer and talked to the technician who said it is not covered under Acura warranty. This is definitely a safety issue as I could have been driving down the interstate when this happened putting my life and others in danger. I can only assume this is an issue Acura is aware of with the class action lawsuit that had been filed.

AC / DEFROSTER / HVAC I am reporting a potential safety and health defect involving the HVAC system in my 2024 Acura MDX. When operating the air conditioning or the front windshield defroster, a strong musty odor enters the cabin. The dealer informed me that resolving the odor requires an EVAP core cleaning, replacement of the cabin filter, and the use of a disinfectant that will be circulated throughout the ventilation system to kill mold, mildew, and other contaminants. I was told this is the “first step” in addressing the issue and that the estimated cost is $440 out of pocket. This is extremely concerning because the presence of mold or bacterial contamination inside the HVAC evaporator and ventilation system affects the air my children and I breathe inside the vehicle. Mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, headaches, and other symptoms, especially in enclosed spaces. The HVAC system in this vehicle is a sealed, manufacturer-controlled system which the owner cannot access or service, so this type of contamination should not be considered routine maintenance. I have researched this issue and found that Honda/Acura vehicles have a documented history of HVAC mold and mildew odors, and Honda has previously issued internal investigative bulletins requesting dealers to collect parts from vehicles with musty HVAC smells. There are also mold-related complaints already filed with NHTSA for the 2024 MDX model year. This suggests the possibility of a broader engineering or design issue. I need this issue addressed immediately for health reasons, and I may have to initially pay out of pocket to ensure my family’s safety. However, I believe this is a safety-related defect that Acura should be responsible for correcting, not the customer, especially on a relatively new vehicle still under warranty. I am requesting that NHTSA document this case and consider evaluating whether a pattern of HVAC mold contamination exists in newer Acura vehicles.

This repossession was conducted without any prior notice, without communication of the date, time, or location, and without any legal authorization or court order. 1. No opportunity to respond or act • I was outside the country at the time of repossession and had no chance to respond or protect my rights. • The vehicle was removed one day before my arrival, despite my sister attempting to coordinate that the vehicle be held because my mother is seriously ill and could not make payments. • The vehicle had been immobilized for 4 months due to brake and acceleration defects, which were part of a manufacturer recall affecting all MDX vehicles. 2. Illegal and premeditated removal • My vehicle was removed from a private garage using a towing company, without a court order, without my consent, and without legal authorization. • Video evidence clearly shows the doors were closed; the individual opened them himself, deliberately removed the license plates, and covered his face to avoid surveillance cameras. • These actions constitute intentional concealment, unlawful seizure, and theft, not a lawful repossession. 3. Obstruction of Lemon Law claim • Honda Financial never took the vehicle for inspection or repairs, deliberately preventing evidence of factory defects that rendered the vehicle unusable for over a year. • After multiple attempts to resolve the issue, Honda Financial claimed they have no record, effectively denying rightful compensation and acting in bad faith to sabotage my Lemon Law claim. 4.
