On August 19, 2026, my 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i experienced multiple safety\-related warnings at approximately 50,411–50,427 miles\. The vehicle first displayed “Increased steering effort” and instructed me to drive carefully to a service center\. It then displayed a red power\-supply warning stating: “Stop carefully\. Do not continue driving\. Continued driving will lead to malfunction of safety relevant functions\. Battery cannot be recharged\. Call Roadside Assistance\.” A drivetrain warning subsequently appeared\. After the vehicle was stopped and later restarted, the warnings temporarily cleared\. BMW of Atlantic City performed a KeyReader scan\. The report documented the steering, power\-supply and drivetrain messages and showed fault code 80402F, described as “12 VOLT VEHICLE BATTERY TOTAL DISCHARGE\.” The report showed the battery status as “OK” when it was read\. BMW Service Information Bulletin 61 01 23 discusses fault 80402F on certain G07 X7 vehicles and states that a software error may prevent the vehicle from entering sleep mode, resulting in discharge of the 12\-volt battery\. The precise cause in my vehicle has not yet been conclusively diagnosed\. I am concerned that an electrical or software failure can occur while the vehicle is operating and trigger reduced steering assistance, drivetrain warnings and the announced potential malfunction of other safety\-relevant systems\. There was no collision, fire or injury in this incident\. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue for a potential safety\-defect pattern in similarly equipped BMW X7 vehicles\.

The entire car shut down while on the highway with no prior notifications on/from the system. The entire safety of myself and family was put at risk because there where several cars behind us on the highway that could have hit us. I am not sure the dealer has been able to reproduce the issue - Unknown. There was no warning lamps, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to the failure or the car shutting off on the highway.

The IP cluster (gauges that display speedometer, fuel levels and other ADAS features) was blanking intermittently, BMW service center suggested software update as they believed it to be a software bug. Later, when the software update did not work, they suggested we replace the battery even though we tested it months ago and it was fine. After the battery replacement when the IP cluster was still inoperable, BMW recommended i pay another $3k for the IP replacement. I am seeing Hyundai have a similar issue but they have shared a proper recall and repair notice to consumers at NO COST. Many BMW X7 owners have faced a similar issue to mine. I am hoping to gather the complaints and pursue a national recall bulletin as the IP cluster blanking out mid drive can lead to a catastrophic scenario

We came from [XXX] to [XXX] at night. It was rainy in [XXX]. We parked the vehicle in the front of the garage door of the house and went to sleep. Around 8:00-9:00AM two police cars from [XXX] PD came to our house. The officer said that the vehicle calls to BMW or 911 as an emergency and they forwarder that call to FPD. The officers checked the vehicle and they figured that the vehicle did the emergency call when was parked. Now, the emergency call system is not working, because of the bad factory sealant in the top of the roof and the water leaks exactly to the Telecomunication module (TCM). Component Failing: Telematics Control Unit (TCU) / SOS Emergency Call System This vehicle is experiencing an intermittent, total failure of the factory-installed SOS/Emergency Call System due to a known manufacturing defect. BMW has documented this issue in Technical Service Bulletin SIB 65 12 22, admitting that an improper factory paint and sealing process causes the roof-mounted shark fin antenna to separate from the vehicle body. As a direct result of this assembly defect, rainwater has leaked past the roofline and into the vehicle's interior cabin, flooding and short-circuiting the Telematics Control Unit (TCU). Consequently, the critical life-safety SOS system is failing to operate correctly. In the event of a severe crash or medical emergency, the vehicle's automated collision notification system will fail to contact first responders or transmit the vehicle’s GPS location. The manufacturer has acknowledged the defect to me but refuses to cover the repair outside of the narrow 50,000-mile warranty window, nor have they expanded their regional California legal settlements to protect drivers nationwide. Because this factory defect directly compromises a critical federal safety communications component, I request that the NHTSA open an official investigation into BMW model years 2017–2023 to mandate a nationwide safety recall.

BMW has a known issue that the fin antenna on the roof leaks and sets off a cascade of dangerous issues with the Emergency Call function and disabling the heads up dash so that you cannot see your navigation. On April 2, 2026 in Austin, TX it rained and our car started sending an Emergency Call request repeatedly to BMW. BMW operators called repeatedly even though they knew there was no emergency and that they were actively interrupting our driving. The heads up dash would not allow us to see our maps to navigate, but only displayed a notification that an Emergency Call had been initiated. BMW needs to address and recall this antenna seal so that owners can use their cars safely (with all functions) while not paying out of pocket for BMW's failure.

My vehicle is included in BMW Recall Campaign No. 25V 644 – Engine Starter. It has repeatedly failed to start, and on two separate occasions the engine completely stalled while I was stopped at a traffic light. Each time, it took multiple attempts before the car would restart. I have also been stranded in numerous parking lots—during both extreme heat and freezing temperatures—with my children because the vehicle would not start. These incidents were unexpected, unsafe, and entirely consistent with the symptoms described in the recall. We have experienced these problems since purchasing the vehicle, but at the time we had no reason to believe we needed to document every occurrence. Now that BMW has acknowledged a fire risk defect and still has no available remedy, I do not feel safe continuing to operate this car. BMW has even advised owners not to park in a garage due to the potential fire hazard. The first recall was issued in 2024 and did not resolve the issue. The subsequent recall in August 2025 still has no fix. This ongoing situation presents a serious safety risk, and it is unacceptable that it remains unresolved. BMW should be buying these vehicles back and compensating owners for the significant inconvenience and danger this defect has caused.

The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a left turn, the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic. The contact immediately depressed the brake and attempted to shift into park(P), but the transmission failed to respond as needed. The contact remained in the vehicle with the brake pedal depressed until Roadside Assistance arrived. The contact stated that the Roadside Assistance team held the start button down and the gear selector was shifted into neutral(N) for a second and continued to inadvertently shift back to park(P). The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was unable to properly diagnose the vehicle and referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. My 2019 BMW X7 is under Safety Recall 25V-644 for an overheating/fire-risk defect, but the recall remedy is unavailable. The vehicle has now experienced multiple safety-related failures that appear to be progressing. BMW diagnosed the following failures: • Emergency Call System Malfunction • GPS and maps not working • Failure of the TCB telematics module • Failure of the antenna and TCB battery due to fluid ingress • Battery voltage in the red zone • All four tire pressure sensors beginning to fail • Collapsed engine mounts attributed to heat • $11,296 in repair estimates related to electrical and heat damage Immediately after picking up the vehicle from BMW service, a new battery/charging system warning light appeared that was NOT present before the visit. This suggests further deterioration of the electrical system. The combination of: • an open fire-risk recall with no fix available, • fluid ingress damaging telematics components, • multiple electrical and safety-system failures, and • new warning lights appearing after service makes this vehicle unsafe to operate, especially for long-distance highway travel. I am requesting that NHTSA document this as a safety-defect case and assist in ensuring BMW provides a safe resolution.

We are the original Owner of a 2023 BMW X7 with 17,500 miles. The past 2+ months the screen/display will go blank for up to 30 seconds while driving the vehicle. Obviously this is a serious safety issue. We took the vehicle for service where it was originally purchased at BMW I will say, this issue is very disappointing, scary, and disturbing. The vehicle was originally brought into service on 7/3 and no resolution for the problem has been presented as of yet. According to the Service Advisor, multiple software updates have been applied and the screen/display has been replaced twice, still no resolution. Brought back into Dealership on 7/23/2025 for the same repeated and dangerous issue Brought back again on 8/3/2025 for the same repeated issue. We were promised it was fixed. Drove the car 4 hours, and once again the screen/display went blank.
