Driver Assist & Collision Avoidance complaints by model year
Under FMVSS 101, if a screen experiences a momentary "black screen" or reset cycle while driving, it is considered non-compliant because the driver loses immediate access to the speedometer, safety and ADAS functions of the vehicle. The OEM (BMW North America) does not acknowledge this issue in their vehicles and ignores repairs violating NHTSA standards.
NHTSA complaint #11758150 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
The IP cluster (gauges that display speedometer, fuel levels and other ADAS features) was blanking intermittently, BMW service center suggested software update as they believed it to be a software bug. Later, when the software update did not work, they suggested we replace the battery even though we tested it months ago and it was fine. After the battery replacement when the IP cluster was still inoperable, BMW recommended i pay another $3k for the IP replacement. I am seeing Hyundai have a similar issue but they have shared a proper recall and repair notice to consumers at NO COST. Many BMW X7 owners have faced a similar issue to mine. I am hoping to gather the complaints and pursue a national recall bulletin as the IP cluster blanking out mid drive can lead to a catastrophic scenario

Traveling at highway speed of 65 mph. Not using the cruise control or self driving feature and had both hands on the wheel. Message appears on the screen “inability to drive detected” with a chime and red warning light. I am driving the car so not sure what this means. Moments later, a new warning message saying “Emergency stop initiated” and the car slams on the brakes and starts to steer toward the shoulder. There is traffic around me braking and trying to get out of my way. The car will not respond until I finally press the accelerator to the floor and the message goes away. Car goes back to normal. I spoke to BMW and they really did know why it would do this. I asked if the driver attention system was active even without an assist features on and they weren’t sure. The only thing they could suggest is that since it was sunset, maybe the car couldn’t see me with my sunglasses on. I am concerned because this could have caused an accident and that there is no clear guidance from BMW as to why it happened at all.
NHTSA complaint #11741986 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
I was told this car has rear cross traffic warning when I ordered it from our local BMW dealer. After several "close calls" in parking lots, I took it into the dealer because it doesn't work like any of our other vehicles (Mercedes). I was told by the dealer that you have to be actively backing up and the car has to be immediately behind you in a very close proximity to the car before it will even alert you. There doesn't seem any active braking either. When you do a search on this issue with BMW's, it is a very common complaint of BMW owners. I believe this is a major safety issue with the feature that BMW claims.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
While driving under normal conditions, the Lane Keep Assist system on my 2025 BMW Alpina XB7 unexpectedly and violently jerked the steering wheel without driver input. The sudden steering intervention caused the vehicle to abruptly change direction and strike a curb, resulting in a loss-of-control event. This occurred without warning and could have resulted in a serious crash involving other vehicles, pedestrians, or roadside obstacles. Additionally, the adaptive cruise control system has repeatedly applied sudden and aggressive braking without an apparent reason or obstacle present. These abrupt braking events create a significant risk of a rear-end collision, as following vehicles are not anticipating such sudden deceleration. These issues involve advanced driver-assistance safety systems that are intended to enhance control and safety. Instead, they are operating in a manner that overrides driver input and introduces unsafe driving conditions. The servicing dealership acknowledged the issues and advised me not to use the Lane Keep Assist and cruise control features. Being instructed to disable safety systems due to unsafe behavior is unacceptable and does not resolve the underlying defect. Given the loss-of-control incident and the ongoing unpredictable braking behavior, I believe these defects present a serious safety risk to vehicle occupants and the public.

After starting car, car went into Power Failure mode, warning to immediately stop car, car continued driving, but eventually engaged parking mode and wouldn’t go back into drive mode until I turned it off and back on again.

Traveling on I70 on 9/3 at 70 mph around 2pm the car stopped abuptly and displayed Emergency Stoppage and made an SOS call to BMW. After a few minutes the car was retarted and we proceeded to our destination. No injuries or damage since there was no one behind us. Dealer told us not to drive the car and it iwas towed to BMW Service.
NHTSA complaint #11685013 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
SUMMARY: INTEGRATED BRAKE: The Integrated Brake (IB) system may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. If the IB system was not functioning properly, a warning lamp and message will be displayed in the instrument cluster. In August, this recall was expanded to include additional potentially affected vehicles. SAFETY RISK: In some cases, there will be a reduction in power assist braking, which could lead to an extended stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system may not function, which could also affect braking performance as well as vehicle handling and control. However, fully mechanical braking is not affected and, if the IB system is not functioning properly, the parking (emergency) brake will be automatically activated to aid in braking performance and help maintain vehicle stability and control. REMEDY: The Integrated Brake (IB) system will be replaced for free by an authorized BMW center which should take about two to three hours. RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available This recall was issued on February 12, 2024, more than a year ago and the manufacturer has informed that the parts to fix this issue is on backorder. This is a safety issue.
NHTSA complaint #11682276 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
I am leasing a 2025 BMW X7 vin number ([XXX]) through BMW Financial Services. The vehicle has had an active federal safety recall since approximately February 2024, and as of today, the manufacturer has not provided a remedy to address the issue. The recall is listed on the NHTSA website but remains unresolved for over 17 months, despite my attempts to obtain information and updates from both the dealership and BMW directly. I believe this is a violation of my consumer rights under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act and breach of warranty, as the vehicle has a known safety defect that the manufacturer has failed to repair within a reasonable time. I am requesting assistance in: 1.Reaching a resolution with BMW to either terminate the lease without penalty, or 2.Compelling the manufacturer to provide an immediate remedy. This recall impacts the safety and use of the vehicle, and I am concerned for both my safety and the financial obligations tied to a defective product. NHTSA complaint #11677700 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
Vehicle Information: Make: BMW Model: X7 Year: [2025] VIN: [XXX] Component/System Involved: Parking Assistance / Automatic Parking System / Sensors Summary of the Issue (Complaint): On [XXX], while using the Parking Assistance feature on my father's BMW X7 (VIN: [XXX]), the vehicle malfunctioned and caused an accident inside our home driveway. While the system was guiding the vehicle into the garage—as it has successfully done many times before—it suddenly and erratically turned the steering wheel to the right, failed to stop, and struck another parked vehicle. There were no sensor warnings, no audible beeps, and the system did not engage the brakes to avoid the collision. My father was attentive and had to manually slam on the brakes, but the impact had already occurred. We reported the incident to our local BMW dealership and BMW North America. However, the response has been extremely unsatisfactory. A BMW engineer claimed the system was “working as intended,” even though the erratic behavior and failure to stop contradict that claim. Representatives implied the system requires full attentiveness, but my father was alert and monitoring the process. No one from BMW has taken responsibility, and they have refused to assist in repairing the vehicle damage caused by their system’s failure. This incident highlights a serious safety issue with BMW’s Parking Assistance system, which can misbehave even when used correctly and attentively. It poses a danger not just to property but potentially to people. I am filing this complaint in hopes that NHTSA investigates this matter further. Incident Type: Property Damage (No injuries) Location: Private residential garage Desired Action: Investigation into BMW’s Parking Assistance system functionality and accountability from the manufacturer for the damage caused by this failure. NHTSA complaint #11672210 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
I am filing this complaint regarding a persistent safety issue with the rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) system in my 2022 BMW X7. The system consistently fails to detect approaching vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists unless they are within approximately two feet of the rear of the vehicle. This extremely limited detection range renders the system effectively useless for its intended purpose of preventing collisions while reversing, especially in environments such as parking lots, residential streets, and school zones. On multiple occasions, both my wife and I have experienced near accidents while reversing, including incidents involving moving vehicles and pedestrians—some of whom were small children at our child’s daycare. In all of these cases, the RCTA system failed to provide any warning or alert. This lack of detection poses a serious safety hazard not only to my family but also to those in the vicinity of the vehicle. Given that rear cross traffic alert systems are a key safety feature designed to reduce backover accidents, especially in scenarios where the driver’s visibility is compromised, I believe this constitutes a serious design or calibration flaw. I am concerned that this issue may not be isolated to my vehicle alone, and I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter further to determine whether a recall or software update is necessary to correct the defect.

Without warning the vehicle came to an abrupt stop while going about 25 mph. I got out and checked and noticed a liquid dripping from underneath the front area of the vehicle. Later determined it was the front transfer case. I really would hate to think what could have happened at higher speeds. Again, no warning at all.

Car presents the forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning are inoperable. Errors popped up 10-20 times while driving a short distance. These are repeat errors that BMW has not fixed. As i drove the car kept alerting me that the systems were offline. They would come back online and go back offline as i drove. Car has been to dealership around 8-9 times and BMW says there is adamant that nothing is wrong with the car even though this error has been happening since I have had the car at around 1000 miles. Currently at ~13k miles now.

Multiple times when my 2024 X7 has started or I have been driving a warning message pops up that states that Forward Collision Mitigation or other safety systems are "reduced". BMW has stated there is nothing to fix on the car.
