The entire car shut down while on the highway with no prior notifications on/from the system. The entire safety of myself and family was put at risk because there where several cars behind us on the highway that could have hit us. I am not sure the dealer has been able to reproduce the issue - Unknown. There was no warning lamps, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to the failure or the car shutting off on the highway.

I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, commonly found in model years 2019–2021. These vehicles utilize a variable-displacement engine oil pump containing an internal thermoplastic adjusting component responsible for regulating oil pressure. Field failures are increasingly being reported in which this internal component fractures, resulting in sudden loss or instability of engine oil pressure/lubrication. Loss of lubrication can cause the vehicle to become disabled without warning while driving or shortly after startup. This creates a safety hazard, particularly when vehicles become immobilized in active traffic or during winter conditions the cold is when they fail the most, where occupants may be exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Owners are currently unable to determine whether their vehicles contain the original thermoplastic oil pump design or a later revised version utilizing metal internal components, as VIN-based parts information now identifies updated components in the car even when no replacement has occurred and the old components are actually in the car. Also, BMW has actively removed the plastic part number out of all dealer networks, demonstrating knowledge of the defective component.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X7. The contact stated that the Auto START/STOP feature failed to function as intended. There was a fire message displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed; however, the dealer was unable to update the control unit. The control unit was not communicating as intended. 2021 BMW X7 Minneapolis, MN

ENGINE

On [XXX], while traveling at highway speeds on a public roadway, the vehicle suffered a sudden, violent, and catastrophic mechanical explosion in the front drivetrain. Without any prior warning lights, dashboard messages, or operational symptoms, the front differential and driveshaft structurally shattered. The physical violence of the drivetrain components exploding at high speed sent metallic shrapnel directly into the engine compartment. This flying shrapnel pierced the structural engine block, completely destroying the engine and causing immediate, total power loss while surrounded by highway traffic. This sudden loss of propulsion and mechanical locking created an extreme, life-threatening hazard to myself and surrounding motorists. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership (Motorwerks BMW, Bloomington, MN). The service department confirmed the mechanical sequence: the front differential structurally failed first, and its catastrophic disintegration directly caused the secondary destruction of the engine block. The formal repair estimate is $66,124.76. BMW of North America Executive Care has formally reviewed the case and issued a written admission of fault regarding the drivetrain components, offering to cover the differential and driveshaft repairs. However, they are refusing to remedy the catastrophic engine destruction caused directly by their failed safety component. This component failure represents a severe, systemic structural safety risk that warrants an immediate federal safety investigation into 2019–2022 BMW X7/X5 front differential assemblies before an explosion results in a fatal highway collision. I was told today that my BMW engine oil pump is failing because of plastic internal components which will cause irreversible catastrophic engine damage during operation which is extremely dangerous and that I was informed by the dealer that BMW quietly changed them 2 years after due to the failure rate. If the oil pump shatters, debris can permanently damage the engine during operation jeopardizing my safety and those driving around me, making replacement with the upgraded, all-metal oil pump, that BMW quietly changed due to this failure, nearly $6k -$8k to fix and is not covered though they admit it is a known failure/safety issue. As of XXX, BMW Korea is running a free repair campaign (recall) to address oil pump failures affecting the B58TU engine in that country. Affected vehicles include models manufactured between XXX and XXX. BMW Korea replaces the non-safe original plastic oil pump with BMW's upgraded metal design, and even covers prior out-of-pocket replacements. NHTSA needs to hold BMW accountable and force BMW USA to complete the same safety recall for the exact same issue of faulty engine oil pumps they installed to save money as BMW Korea for the United States. Safety recalls should NOT be optional in USA and especially so if BMW is already doing the recall in another country for same issue identified in their cars sold here in the [XXX] too. Low oil sensor continues to light up and says i am low on oil. Found out that my oil pump was the main cause of the issue. At this time I have to have the oil pump replaced. It was also determined there have been numerous reports regarding oil pump failure in the 2020 BMW x7 due to an internal plastic part.

While driving the vehicle sensor lights began to come on. I assumed it was a dirty outside sensor. Not long after the ABS system lit up and my car said traction even though I was just pulling into my driveway. I quickly turned around and drove to my mechanic. Showed him all the lights and he connected the computer to read the error codes. Found out that my oil pump was the main cause of the issue. Double checked to make sure it wasn't a battery failure causing incorrect error codes and the battery was in good condition. At this time I have to have the oil pump replaced. 2019 BMW X7 at 102,000 miles Staten Island, NY

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X7. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated and the engine seized. The check engine warning light was illuminated. While attempting to restart the vehicle, the vehicle restarted with the power train warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed, and the failure reoccurred. The failure was a persistent failure. The contact stated that there was thick white smoke coming from the exhaust. The contact noticed a fuel odor on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. In addition, the RPM was elevated. I am writing to formally report a potential safety-related defect involving BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, primarily affecting model years 2019 through 2021. My vehicle experienced a sudden loss of engine oil pressure that resulted in catastrophic engine failure. This condition occurred with little to no warning and led to immediate vehicle disablement. The failure created a hazardous situation, as the vehicle was no longer able to maintain propulsion and could have placed occupants at risk because it occurred in active traffic or unsafe conditions. Based on my experience and additional research, the issue appears to originate from the engine’s oil pump design. Specifically, the oil pump contains an internal pressure-regulating component originally manufactured from plastic. This component is prone to fracturing, particularly during cold starts or low ambient temperatures. When this failure occurs, oil pressure becomes erratic or is lost entirely, often without sufficient warning to prevent engine damage or vehicle shutdown. My vehicle had this occur on January 20th 2026, as it was 5 Degrees outside. I suddenly lost oil pressure and had my vehicle’s engine catastrophically fail on a highway with my two small children ages (3) and (7 months) in the vehicle. In some cases, drivers may observe warning signs such as inability to measure oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure readings, or drivetrain malfunction warnings. However, these indicators are inconsistent and often appear only moments before complete failure, leaving insufficient time for corrective action. This issue represents a significant safety concern for the following reasons: * Sudden loss of oil pressure can result in immediate engine shutdown or loss of propulsion while driving * Failures frequently occur under predictable conditions (cold starts in low temperatures), indicating a repeatable defect * Drivers are not provided with adequate warning to safely respond before damage.

Subject: Formal Complaint – Safety Issue, Repeated Repair Failure, and Dealer Negligence (BMW X7) To Whom It May Concern, I am filing a formal complaint regarding a serious and ongoing safety issue involving my BMW X7 (VIN: [XXX] ), as well as repeated failure by an authorized BMW dealership (Fields BMW Winter Park, Florida) to properly diagnose and repair the vehicle. Since purchase, the vehicle has exhibited a persistent defect involving both rear tires losing air on a daily basis. This condition requires constant manual refilling and repeatedly triggers warning alerts on the vehicle dashboard. Despite bringing the vehicle to the dealership no fewer than five times for the exact same issue, the problem remains unresolved. This represents a clear failure to repair a recurring defect, and more importantly, a potential safety hazard, as tire pressure instability directly affects vehicle control and operational safety. Additionally, during a recent service visit, the vehicle was returned in worse condition than when it was delivered: The tire issue was not resolved; The tires were returned underinflated; A check engine light was activated, which was not present prior to service. Due to the overall pattern of poor service and lack of resolution, I have already replaced that vehicle with a Mercedes-Benz. While driving my 2021 BMW X7 at approximately 32,000 miles, the vehicle suddenly displayed a drivetrain malfunction warning along with a low engine oil pressure warning. 2024 BMW X7 Campbell, CA

The X7 engine shut down twice while driving. Both incidents took place in busy traffic, engine shut down with warning sound and error message flashed up on screen and disappeared so quick that no one can remember. As the result, the vehicle was stuck in the middle of busy traffic. Within less than 1 minute, the vehicle can be restarted and driven as normal. The vehicle was brought to BMW dealership since the 1st incident. Dealership implemented software update only. The 2nd incident happened roughly 7 months after the 1st incident. Currently it's with dealership again since the 2nd incident. At the moment of writing up this case, the service advisor told me replacing the 12V battery would solve the issue. However, there's no more details provided regarding how a low battery would cause engine shutdown. This is the concerning part as BMW seems not able to root cause the underlying issue which could cause serious safety risk for occupants of this vehicle.

2021 BMW X7 at 79,000 miles Cedar Falls, IA

The contact owns a 2021 BMW X7. The contact stated that while driving at 20 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode. The message "Pull Over and Turn Off Your Car - You Have Lost All the Water In the Radiator" was displayed. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart, but was towed to Hawkeye Motorsports LLC, where it was diagnosed that the water pump pulley had shattered. The mechanic replaced the coolant pump, coolant lines, and belts. Additionally, the coolant lines were tested. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed that reimbursement assistance could only be provided if the VIN was included in a related recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.

2020 BMW X7 Cedar Rapids, IA

My vehicle is included in BMW Recall Campaign No. 25V 644 – Engine Starter. It has repeatedly failed to start, and on two separate occasions the engine completely stalled while I was stopped at a traffic light. Each time, it took multiple attempts before the car would restart. I have also been stranded in numerous parking lots—during both extreme heat and freezing temperatures—with my children because the vehicle would not start. These incidents were unexpected, unsafe, and entirely consistent with the symptoms described in the recall. We have experienced these problems since purchasing the vehicle, but at the time we had no reason to believe we needed to document every occurrence. Now that BMW has acknowledged a fire risk defect and still has no available remedy, I do not feel safe continuing to operate this car. BMW has even advised owners not to park in a garage due to the potential fire hazard. The first recall was issued in 2024 and did not resolve the issue. The subsequent recall in August 2025 still has no fix. This ongoing situation presents a serious safety risk, and it is unacceptable that it remains unresolved. BMW should be buying these vehicles back and compensating owners for the significant inconvenience and danger this defect has caused.

Front differential needing completely replaced at 44,000 miles. Might need a transfer case replacement as well. Original quote of $8,300 and if the transfer case is needing replaced, another $8,000-$10,000 job. I have done research online that a lot of other people with X7's are having this issue. Autobahn BMW in Fort Worth, Texas confirmed the issue and that it needs complete replacement done. There were no warnings, no lights on the dash, and nothing that would indicate there was an issue until leaking starting and I could smell the oil burning.
