Owners have filed 339 complaints
about the 1997 Cadillac Deville with NHTSA between 1997 and 2022.
The largest single group is the brakes.
Across this model's run it ranks 11 of 13 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 73
Against the median year of the Cadillac Deville. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 34
6.5% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 7
4% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
How 1997 compares with every other Cadillac Deville
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.
Odometer readings owners gave when they filed. About half of all
complaints include one.

When owners complained
A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing
out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single
owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 1997 Cadillac Deville
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 1997 Cadillac Deville
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 20001745,168 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, the side impact airbags may deploy unexpectedly, without a crash, as the vehicle is started or during normal driving. A driver or right front passenger in the proper driving or seating positions and using safety belts could receive minor injuries, such as bruising, from contact with a deploying side impact airbag. However, a driver or right front passenger that is too close to an inflating airbag could receive more serious injuries. Correction: Dealers will replace the driver and passenger side impact sensing modules.
Recall 19970917,303 units in Canada
Brakes
Certain vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the electronic brake control module or the electronic brake and traction control module may cause the antilock brake system (ABS) to cycle during a non-ABS application. This may result in an increase in stopping distance and a possible vehicle crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the electronic brake control module.
Reports where the owner recorded a crash, a fire, an injury or a death.

[ ] I had purchased my car used. I found that there was a recall on this model. I went online and ran the vin # and confirmed that. I called the dealership and explained they looked it up and confirmed it needed to have the original plastic fuel rail replaced with a new stainless steel fuel rail. They informed me that they had to order the parts from Michigan an it would be 2 weeks for the parts to get here and then we could set up an appointment to bring the car in. over 2 weeks later they called and we set up the appointment I had started the car the morning of the appointment for it to go to the dealership. I needed to grab something from in the house so I turned it off to go back in my house. I was answering a text on my phone and as I looked up to get out of the car there were flames coming out from between the fender and the hood. I rushed to the front of the car to put the flames out.. I just got the car a d couldn't afford to let turn to the ground. I took off my hoodie and used it to UT out the flames while doing so the hood came down and hit me in the back of my head,I burned my left hand pretty badly and burnt off my arm hair. I have had a ringing in my ears since I was hit in the head. I called the dealer and told them what happened and I would have to get it towed in. They said okay it took three days to get a tow truck because we had a snow storm. The tow companies were booked. I got the car to the dealer and exspected them to start the job. SERVICE BRAKES
I WAS TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROX. 65-70 MPH WHEN I WENT TO BRAKE DUE TO TRAFFIC AND THERE WAS SEVERE BRAKE FADE. THE CAR WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN BUT COULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR EVEN AFTER SEVERAL PUMPS. I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. I STILL HAD TO TRAVEL ANOTHER 30 MILES BEFORE REACHING MY DESTINATION AND THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO FAIL. THE BRAKES WOULD ONLY SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. THIS IS THE FIRST BRAKE PROBLEM I HAVE HAD WITH THIS VEHICLE AND ONLY HAS 65000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE TO CONTACT A MECHANIC TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
