Windows, Mirrors & Wipers complaints by model year
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at an undisclosed speed under sunny conditions, light entering through the windshield reflected off the chrome trim around the instrument panel and caused distortion and lines in the driver's side and driver’s mirror, creating a visibility hazard. The contact added that the glare disappeared when the windows were rolled down. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was operating normally. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,604.

GMC issued a service bulletin #16019 stating that the HVAC temperature control valve (No. 15-51369) was prone to break causing the defrost to become inoperable. This is clearly a safety concern. However, GMC did not issue a recall. In addition, GMC had a limited time window for customers to address the problem. The dealerships were instructed to examine the part and if faulty, replace it. My GMC Canyon did not experience this problem until after the service bulletin expired. GMC stated that this was not a safety recall. Is visibility not a safety hazard?

Headlights began flickering two days after purchase of vehicle. Infotainment screen that operates the headlights, as there is no physical headlight knobs or buttons, also malfunction and is inoperable. So I can not turn my headlights on or off, they're set to auto and I can not adjust it. Service department at my dealership has been able to replicate my issues and are trying to fix them, but parts availability is an issue. GM has informed me that the parts are delayed with no eta of when they would be available. Issues with the headlights flickering could lead other drivers to think I'm flashing my lights at them as I'm telling them to go ahead and that could cause a wreck. Also with the flickering there is a chance that the lights could completely cut off or go out and if I'm driving at night that would be a very big issue. Especially since the Infotainment screen that I need to operate the headlight functions is also inoperable. The Infotainment screen is also on national backorder per GM. GM documented with Document ID 6691954 "#PIT6203: Headlamp or DRL Flicker or Flash (July 16, 2024) Possible hazards include oncoming drivers being flashed from flicker. Oncoming drivers thinking they're being signaled by the flicker. Pedestrians or cyclists thinking the flash or flicker is signaling them to proceed and that vehicle operator will yield. Possible that headlamps will stay off when they flicker, rendering the driver unable to see during night driving.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, he became aware that the defroster had failed to properly defrost the windshield. The contact also stated that because of the failure, the windshield wipers had failed to function properly after becoming frozen. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the defroster was operating as intended; however, the design was inadequate to defrost the entire front windshield. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 3,000.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that upon activating the defroster during cold winter weather, he became aware that the defroster failed to properly defrost the front windshield and that the windshield wipers failed to adequately remove ice debris, potentially compromising windshield visibility. After a visual inspection of the windshield, the contact observed that ice had damaged the windshield wipers. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 3,000. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to the dealership on 12/14/23. They did a full check on the vehicle and could not fix the issue. The dealership also were unable to find any information about a potential fix from the manufacturer.

GM is pushing updates over the air that are permanently disabling the backup camera by damaging the camera control module. Not sure yet how long we’ll have to wait for the part. I’ve heard of many that have been waiting months. They should not be pushing out defective software when it takes out the safety equipment.

Windshield defrost failed when HVAC Module Temp Door failed similarly to failures in 2015 and 2016 year models. GMC confirmed and repaired the 2015 and 2016 model years; but, has so far refused to acknowledge or repair my 2017 model; even though, from information available to me, it is the same part with the same problem. The dealership quoted me $2,500 for repairs.

THE HEADLIGHTS ON THIS TRUCK ARE SO DIM THAT AT NIGHT IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD YOU ARE DRIVING ON. GMC NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WITH A HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENT OR MAJOR IMPROVEMENT.

THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT DOWN SHIFT WHEN CLIMBING A SMALL HILL IN NORMAL TRAFFIC AT NORMAL SPEEDS. I CONSTANTLY HAVE TO USE THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION TO MAKE THE TRUCK DOWNSHIFT OR I HAVE TO PRESS ON THE GRASS IN ORDER TO BRING THE RPM UP A LITTLE HIGHER USING MORE FUEL THAN REQUIRED. THIS IN ITSELF IS DANGEROUS SINCE I AM IN THEN MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. WHEN I PURCHASED THE TRUCK NONE OF THE RECALL WERE ON CARAFE NOR DID THE DEALER INFORM ME THAT THIS VEHICLE TYPE AND MODEL HAS ALREADY HAD SEVERAL RECALLS AFFECTING ITS PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY. THERE IS ALSO SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE DEFROST SYSTEM WHETHER ITS ON HEAT OR COOL. THERE IS A RATTLING NOISE THAT CAN BE HEARD OVER THE FAN NOISE WHEN THE VEHICLE AIR CONDITIONER IS SWITCH TO THE DEFROST MODE. I AM TRULY DISAPPOINTED AND VERY CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY. GM SHOULD HAVE PULLED THIS VEHICLE OFF THE MARKET!

(3RD) - OCCURRENCE OF THE FOLLOWING SAME PROBLEM....THE HEATER AND DEFROSTER SYSTEMS IN MY NEW 2015 GMC CANYON PRODUCE ONLY COLD AIR, REGARDLESS OF THE SETTINGS. THIS CREATES A FOG FILM ON THE INSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD MAKING THE CANYON INOPERABLE DUE TO LACK OF VISIBILITY. THE GMC DEALER HAS ALREADY REPLACED SEVERAL "HEATER/DEFROSTER", BUT THE NEW SYSTEM CONTINUES TO FAIL. THE LACK OF HEAT PROBLEM OCCURS AT ALL TIMES (I.E. MANUAL KEY START, REMOTE START, COLD ENGINE START, WARM ENGINE START, ETC.)

AN INCIDENT IDENTICAL TO THE DESCRIPTION OF RECALL 11V-276 OCCURRED. SNOW AND ICE WERE PRESENT. THIS RENDERED THE DRIVER'S SIDE WIPER INOPERABLE, LEAVING THE FIELD OF THE WINDSHIELD AND ENDING PAST THE DRIVER'S DOOR.
NHTSA complaint #10683409 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
THIS VEHICLE USES A RESISTOR FOR VARIABLE SPEEDS (X4) ON THE VENTILATION BLOWER. DURING CONTINUOUS OR FREQUENT USE (I.E. DEFROST, AIR CONDITIONING) A BURNING SMELL DEVELOPS. THE BURNING SMELL INCREASES OVER TIME AFTER REPEATED USAGE AND THE INCREMENTAL BLOWER SPEED CIRCUITS ARE BURNED OUT AND DISABLED. THE WIRES ARE BLACKENED AND CONNECTORS MELTED AND THE PLASTIC CONNECTING BASE OF THE RESISTOR IS MELTED AND BLACKENED. AT TIMES THE VEHICLE WIRE HARNESS IS AFFECTED. GM HAS A "SERVICE BULLETIN" WHICH PRESCRIBES A "REPAIR" FOR THIS MALFUNCTION (I.E. NEW RESISTOR, PIGTAIL WIRES AND CONNECTORS, AND A BLOWER REPLACEMENT IF REQUIRED) ---- BUT IT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND IT OCCURS REPEATEDLY THROUGHOUT OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE RESISTOR AND WIRES IN THIS CIRCUIT AT LEAST 6 TIMES IN THE LAST THREE YEARS. OUR CANYON BEGAN EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM AT ABOUT 85,000 MILES. EACH REPLACEMENT (INCLUDING LABOR AND PARTS) COSTS ABOUT $150. I CONTACTED GM LAST YEAR -- THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER BUT WANTED ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET BY THE HOUR FOR ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING. I ALSO CONTACTED CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE LAST MONTH WHEN THEY WERE ADVERTISING NEW RECALLS BASED ON SERVICE BULLETINS --- BUT THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED UNLESS AN OPEN FLAME WAS PRESENT IN THE SITUATION. WE EVENTUALLY BYPASSED THIS CIRCUIT BY INSTALLING CORE WIRE, A ONE-WAY SWITCH, AND A FUSE. AT THE VERY LEAST, THIS IS A DISTRACTION. AT THE WORST -- DEFROST, HEAT, A/C, ALL FUNCTIONS INVOLVING THE BLOWER BECOME DISABLED AND THE VEHICLE HARNESS CORE WIRE CAN BECOME DAMAGED.
