NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2001 GMC Yukon XL

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE UNWANTED ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) ACTIVATION. THIS CONDITION IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN ENVIRONMENTALLY CORROSIVE AREAS. THIS RECALL WILL BE LAUNCHED IN THE "SALT BELT" STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ONLY.

Risk: THIS CAN CAUSE INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES DURING LOW-SPEED BRAKE APPLICATIONS, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

05V155000

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH FUEL MODULE RESERVOIR ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN FUEL PUMP WIRES CONNECTORS MAY OVERHEAT UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Risk: IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT WIRE IS EXPOSED, THE FUEL PUMP FUSE WILL BLOW, DISABLING THE FUEL PUMP AND CAUSING AN ENGINE STALL OR NO-START CONDITION. IF SUFFICIENT HEAT IS CONDUCTED TO THE PASS-THROUGH CONNECTOR, A HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR MAY RESULT, WHICH MAY CAUSE A 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' LIGHT TO BE ILLUMINATED DURING THE EMISSION SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE. FUEL VAPOR AND IN SOME CASES LIQUID FUEL MAY LEAK OUT OF THE FUEL TANK THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR BODY. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. ALSO IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT OR GROUND WIRE IS EXPOSED AND SHORTS TO THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER CARD WIRES, INACCURATE FUEL LEVEL READINGS MAY RESULT.

Recall 2007363 741 units in Canada

Engine

On certain vehicles equipped with an 8.1L engine, the crankshaft position sensor may fail. If the sensor operates intermittently, the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. In addition, the engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool-down period. If the sensor becomes inoperable permanently, the engine will quit running and will not re-start. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor.

Recall 2005108 9,085 units in Canada

Electrical

Certain vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wires and/or connectors that may overheat under certain operating conditions. Fuel pump wires that overheat may become exposed and result in one or more conditions; 1) If the ignition circuit wire is exposed and shorts to ground, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. 2) If sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause the Service Engine Soon light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostics routine. Fuel vapour (and in some limited cases liquid fuel) may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. 3) If the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.

Recall 2004395 158,474 units in Canada

Brakes

Certain vehicles located in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador may experience unwanted Antilock Brake System (ABS) activation and increased stopping distances during low-speed brake application (less than 16 km/h and greater than 6 km/h). This condition does not set any ABS codes nor does it illuminate the ABS warning lamp. Correction: Dealers will remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply Zinc-X to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications.

Recall 2002068 63,049 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Certain vehicles fail to conform to CMVSS 209, seat belt assemblies. These vehicles have a condition where one or two sensors in the driver's and front seat passengers seat belt retractors may be inoperative. The seat belt retractors will lock when the belt webbing is extracted during a crash; however the mechanism that locks the seat belt retractor when the vehicle decelerates quickly, such as during heavy braking, may not restrain the occupant as intended during a crash, and could result in injury to the occupant. Correction update: None required as no effect on vehicle safety. See recall 04-158.

Recall 2001135 685 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Certain vehicles have an internal component in the 2nd and 3rd row outboard seat belt retractor that could be cracked. With repeated actuation of the locking mechanism, the crack could spread to the point where the seat belt would no longer lock. In a crash, increased occupant injury could result from the no-lock condition. Correction: Dealers will inspect the outboard seat belts for specific lot numbers and replace the belts if necessary. GM is enclosing an inspection procedure for the owners to use or they can have their dealers do the inspections.

Recall 2001092 22 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali vehicles, the positive battery cable assembly that could come in contact with the steering shaft universal joint. This could eventually cause a wear through of the cable assembly convoluted conduit and cable insulation and result in intermittent electrical shorting. This could result in overheating and igniting of the cable insulation and conduit and a possible underhood fire. Correction: Dealers will inspect the positive battery cable for proper routing and reroute if necessary. Cable will also be inspected for wear of the conduit and cable insulation, and replaced if necessary.

Recall 2000269 1,804 units in Canada

Structure

Certain vehicles may have loose or missing rear wheelhouse plugs. Under certain operating conditions, exhaust gases can flow forward and accumulate in the rear wheelhouse. These exhaust gases could flow into the passenger compartment if the wheelhouse plug is missing or loose and may cause possible illness, unconsciousness or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect for loose or missing wheelhouse plugs, and install new plugs if necessary.

The ABS system in this vehicle and many other similar GM vehicles of this year have abs pumps that malfunction and/or randomly stop working just to begin working later. My vehicle currently has the abs fuse removed because whenever it’s in the abs pump runs continuously even when the vehicle is off. The vehicle I own is in good shape with only 80,000 miles. similar gm vehicles of this age with more miles have even more issues specially with the abs system it’s worse in vehicles that also come equipped with traction control.

I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A 4 LANE STREET. AS I APPROACHED A STOP LIGHT, THE LIGHT CHANGED FROM GREEN TO RED. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THEY DID NOT WORK. I DROVE RIGHT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND AVOIDED A COLLISION WITH 2 OTHER VEHICLES. I WAS GOING DOWNHILL AND PICKING UP SPEED AS I APPROACHED THE NEXT INTERSECTION. THE LIGHT CHANGED TO RED AND BY THIS TIME I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH. AS 2 CARS WENT ACROSS IN FRONT OF ME FROM OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS, I WAS SOMEHOW ABLE TO DRIVE BETWEEN THEM. I WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND DROVE APPROXIMATELY 1/2 MILE UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF OF THE MAIN ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. I ENDED UP HAVING TO DRIVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO STOP. MY 15 YEAR OLD SON AND I WERE EXTREMELY SHAKEN AND VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT AND SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND WE WERE TOLD THAT ALL OF THE BRAKES LINES WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED AND THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT OF THEM. AFTER A $160 TOWING BILL AND A $1,180 REPAIR BILL, WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THE 2001 GMC YUKON. THE DEALERSHIP HAD 2 SIMILAR VEHICLES IN THEIR SHOP THAT DAY THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM GENERAL MOTORS NEEDS TO STEP UP AND ADMIT THAT THEY MADE A HUGE MISTAKE WITH THESE BRAKE LINES. THIS COULD HAVE HAD A DIFFERENT OUTCOME. MY SON AND I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED AND/OR ANOTHER INNOCENT PERSON COULD HAVE ALSO BEEN KILLED. MY SON SAYS HE WILL NEVER RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE AGAIN. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SITUATION BEFORE SOMEBODY DIES, AS A RESULT OF THESE CHEAP STEEL BRAKE LINES THAT CORRODE, ESPECIALLY IN STATES THAT USE SALT ON THEIR ROADS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS.

WAS DRIVING AND A POLICE CAR PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME FROM A SHOPPING CENTER. I APPLIED MY BRAKES AND A REAR BRAKE LINE BURST. I STOPPED ABOUT 1 FOOT FROM THE POLICE CRUISER. HAD ENOUGH FLUID LEFT IN SYSTEM TO GET OFF THE ROAD. HAD LINES INSPECTED WITHIN THE LAST 6 MONTHS AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THEY WERE BAD. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH REAR BRAKE LINES.

AT HOME, STARTED TRUCK, DROVE SHORT DISTANCE ON DRIVEWAY AND APPLIED BRAKES. BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. SAW PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID ON DRIVER'S SIDE MID WAY BELOW TRUCK. COULD HEAR BRAKE FLUID ESCAPING WHEN BRAKES APPLIED (PUMPING), THEN SAW FLUID DRIPPING FROM UNDER TRUCK. HAD TRUCK TOWED TO DEALER, WHO FOUND BRAKE LINE LEAKING ABOVE FUEL TANK AND NOTED ALL BRAKE LINES VERY RUSTY (EXCEPT LINE ABOVE REAR AXLE, WHICH HAD BEEN REPLACED ON 2012). DEALER FABRICATED AND REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES FROM FRT TO JUNCTION ABOVE SPARE TIRE.

OUR DASHBOARD ABS INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN WE SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF, A BUZZING MOTOR SOUND STILL KEPT RUNNING. WE UNPLUGGED THE BATTERY SO IT WOULD NOT RUN DOWN. WE LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND A TON OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME INCIDENTS. WE NOTICED THAT MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCED THE EXACT PROBLEMS WE WERE HAVING, ALSO HAD BRAKE ISSUES WHILE DRIVING. WE RECONNECTED OUR BATTERY, DISCONNECTED THE ABS MODULE AND THE MOTOR SOUND STOPPED, BUT NOW WE DON'T HAVE THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATED. IS THERE A RECALL FOR THIS? IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IT IS A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR MANY PEOPLE AND BECAUSE IT INVOLVES THE BRAKE SYSTEM IT SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS. ACCORDING TO OTHER PEOPLE IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR AS WELL (APPROX. $1500.00). HAS GMC ADDRESSED THIS? WE HAVE A SUBURBAN YUKON XL, 2001.

TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF THE TRUCK. IS HELD ON BY A HOIST AND CABLE SYSTEM. THE CABLE BROKE ALLOWING THE TIRE TO FALL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY THE VEHICLE WAS BEING BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE AND NOT GOING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN IT HAPPENED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL FOR MY FAMILY OR OTHERS ON THE ROAD! SO FAR I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND GMC. THEY WANT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW DO NOT WANT TO COVER THE PART BECAUSE ITS MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS OLD. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THIS PART FAILED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED INJURY TO MY FAMILY AND OR OTHERS. INCIDENT HAPPENED THIS MORNING ON 12/9/11.
