NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2004 GMC Yukon XL

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

THE INBOARD RETENTION NUT USED TO MAINTAIN HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY CAN LOOSEN RESULTING IN AN ABS LIGHT INDICATION, NOISE, AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION.

Risk: WHEEL SEPARATION CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

06V289000

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AN 8.1L V8 (RPO L8-VIN G) ENGINE HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE ENGINE FUEL RAIL PULSE DAMPER RETAINER CLIP MAY FRACTURE RESULTING IN INADEQUATE RETENTION OF THE DAMPER.

Risk: IF THE DAMPER COMES LOOSE, A FUEL LEAK MAY RESULT. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

05V043000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

CERTAIN TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND VANS EQUIPPED WITH BOSCH HYDRO-BOOST BRAKE ASSEMBLIES, THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR MAY CRACK AND SEPARATE FROM THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY DURING NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Risk: IF A SEPARATION OCCURRED AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, FRAGMENTS FROM THE ACCUMULATOR COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THE PRESENCE OF THIS CRACK OR FRACTURED SURFACE COULD ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE ACCUMULATOR CIRCUIT OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE LOSS OF FLUID WOULD CAUSE INCREASED STEERING AND BRAKING EFFORT AND A CRASH MAY OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

04V045000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, PICKUP TRUCKS, AND PASSENGER VANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 135, ?PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS.? SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION BRAKE HYDRO-BOOST HOUSING RELIEF VALVE BORE.

Risk: CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALVE O-RING SEAL MAY FRACTURE. STEERING EFFORTS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHILE BRAKING OR PARKING. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, A FRACTURED SEAL MAY REQUIRE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME VEHICLE DECELERATION RATE AS PRIOR TO THE SEAT FRACTURE.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2011074 190,310 units in Canada

Heater And Defroster

On certain vehicles, the interface between the electrical terminals of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) blower relay resistor module and the wiring connector (which powers the module) may be incapable of conducting higher current levels for sustained periods of operation. In addition, moisture and other contaminants (such as road de-icing materials) may enter the fresh air intake plenum and contact the internal circuit of the module or corrode the terminals. These conditions may cause the relay resistor module or wiring connector to overheat, causing various symptoms such as: the HVAC blower may not function on certain or all blower speed settings; a burning-plastic smell or smoke may be present in the vehicle, or; the HVAC blower may run continually with the ignition in the OFF position. These warning signs could, in certain instances, be leading indicators of an impending vehicle fire, which could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Owners will be provided with additional warranty coverage for the blower motor resistor module/wiring connector overheating condition. Under this "special warranty coverage", should this condition occur within 10 years or 240,000 km from first vehicle registration, dealers will install a replacement blower motor resistor and resistor module connector.

Recall 2006195 1,485 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles, the engine fuel rail pulse damper retainer clip may fracture, resulting in inadequate retention of the damper. If the damper comes loose, a fuel leak may result. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. Correction: Dealers will replace the engine fuel rail pulse damper retainer clip.

Recall 2005119 73,473 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

On certain vehicles, the 2nd row centre occupant seat belt routing may make it difficult to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the hips of occupants. A lap portion of the seat belt routing that is not low and snug on the hips can allow unfavourable occupant kinetics in the event of a crash. Moreover, the higher routing allows the lap belt to ride up on an occupant's abdomen instead of fitting low around their hipbones, and therefore, can expose them to more risk of abdominal and internal organ injury. Correction: Dealers will modify the guide loop.

Recall 2005033 5,014 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the hydraulic brake booster's pressure accumulator may crack and/or separate from the Hydro-Boost assembly during normal vehicle operating conditions. If a separation occurred and the hood of the vehicle was open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. In addition, the presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort. Correction: Dealers will test and, if necessary, replace the Hydro-Boost assembly.

Recall 2004037 4,075 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the relief valve o-ring seal within the brake hydro-boost module could fail. If this happens during braking applications, the driver may be able to hear an engine compartment noise similar to the sound that occurs when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop position. The driver could also experience a slight increase in steering efforts while braking and parking. Under certain driving conditions, a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort may be required to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seal failure. Correction: Dealers will inspect the hydro-boost module, and replace it, if necessary.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

While driving on the freeway at 75 mph I felt significant reduction in speed and the rpms went pretty high. It felt as if I had my foot on the accelerator and the brake at the same time. There was also a burnt smell. After a few minutes it went back to normal. This continued to happen sporadically so I took it to my mechanic he inspected the vehicle could not find an issue he also ran a code scan. No codes pertaining to this issue only knocker sensor and O2 sensor. I replaced those anyway. Then a few days later I was driving to work at it happened again going about 55 mph it felt like the transmission had downshift to a very low gear there was smoke and really bad burning smell. I pulled over immediately and called my mechanic. He towed the vehicle to his shop still could not find a problem. After several months of sitting I had to drive the vehicle home. After approximately 5 miles there was smoke and small flames coming from behind the front drivers side wheel. My mechanic checked the brake, it had engaged without me pressing the pedal and stuck. Now we are having issues getting brake fluid to the rear brakes. Possibly the proportioning valve.

THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 2004 XL YUKON WENT OUT LEAVING ME HELPLESS WITH MY 5 YEAR OLD TWIN DAUGHTERS. I WAS OUT DOING ERRANDS YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS TRAVELING 55 MILES AN HOUR ON A MAJOR SIDE HIGHWAY WHEN I WENT TO BRAKE AND MY FOOT WENT STRAIGHT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOOR.... I WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP I WAS PETRIFIED BECAUSE I WAS IN FULL TRAFFIC. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD INTO THE GRASS TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. THIS WAS THE MOST FRIGHTENING SITUATION I HAVE EVER BEEN IN. WHEN MY HUSBAND ARRIVED HOME I EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED , HE LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK TO FIND ALL I SAID ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND RUSTED AND CRUMBLY TO THE GROUND. HE SAID HE NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE THIS. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL USED CARS IN OUR LIFETIME AND THIS IS THE FIRST TO EVER EXPERIENCE BRAKE LINE FAILURE!!!!!! I CALLED GM TO DISCUSS MY DILEMMA AND HOPEFULLY GET HELP WITH THE REPAIR AND CONFIRM MY HUSBANDS FINDINGS. WE WERE ADVISED THEY WILL DO THE TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC,BUT WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC. WE WERE ALSO ADVISED THIS WAS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE. WELL IF WE WOULD HAVE EVER THOUGHT THAT WE WOULD NOT BE IN THIS PREDICAMENT TODAY... WELL HERE I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THEM ABOUT THE TOW. I ALSO CALLED THE GM DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY HAD SEVERAL CARS IN THERE DEALERSHIP RIGHT NOW FOR BRAKE LINE REPAIR, BUT COULD DO NOTHING WITH ABSORBING THE REPAIR COST. I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO GENERAL MOTORS AND TAKE IT UP WITH THEM.... AT THIS POINT I AM THANKFUL FOR BEING ALIVE WITH MY BEAUTIFUL TWIN DAUGHTERS WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN CRIPPLED , DISMEMBERED OR EVEN DEAD I AM SEEKING FROM GENERAL MOTORS COMPENSATION FOR REPAIRS OF MY BRAKELINES ON MY GM XL YUKON 2004.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

THE SPEEDOMETER WILL WORK SOMETIMES BUT MOST OF TIME IT WONT. ALSO THE OTHER GAUGES IN DASH BOARD WILL QUIT WORKING. THE PERIOD OF TIME OF IT NOT WORKING HAS STEADILY INCREASE. IT HAS CAUSED BOTH MY HUSBAND TICKETS OR WARNINGS BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WORK. THE OTHER GAUGES ( THE OIL, TEMP AND RPM )ARE UNRELIABLE. I CHECKED WITH A MECHANIC AND HE SAYS THIS IS COMMON FOR THE MODEL I HAVE. TO REPAIR THEY HAVE TO REMOVE THE DASHBOARD.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

WHEN I START THE VEHICLE AND GO TO THE CORNER STORE TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF, COME OUT OF STORE TO RESTART VEHICLE IT WILL NOT START IT MAY TAKE ME 10 MINUTES TO 4 HOURS TO GET THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN. MEANING I HAVE BEEN STRANDED AT GROCERY STORES, WORK, SCHOOL FUNCTIONS. ATTEMPTING TO GET THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN I AM CONSTANTLY TURNING THE SWITCH. AT THIS PRESENT TIME I HAVE NOT DROVE MY TRUCK IN ALMOST 5 MONTHS. AND I HAVE BEEN MAKING TRUCK PAYMENTS ON A VEHICLE I CAN'T DRIVE.... AT THIS TIME NOT SURE IF IT IS IGNITION SWITCH OR PASS LOCK I KNOW BOTH PARTS SHOULD BE COVERED BECAUSE IT IS A DEFAULT FROM THE MANUFACTURER.

SERVICE BRAKES

I HAVE A 2004 GMC YUKON XL AND ON 10/21/13 MY BRAKE COMPLETELY GAVE OUT. LUCKILY I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT TEN MPH AND WAS ABLE TO ROLL TO A STOP. THIS WAS A VERY SCARY AND UNSAFE CONDITION. MY SON USUAL DRIVES THIS TRUCK TO SCHOOL AND WORK THANK GOD HE WAS NOT BEHIND THE WHEEL. UPON INSPECTION I NOTICED THE BRAKE LINES ARE COMPLETELY CORRODED. THE BRAKE LINE UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT DOOR JUST BEHIND THE ABS UNIT CORRODED THROUGH. ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES SHOW MAJOR CORROSION. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 76,500 MILES ON IT. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO A VEHICLE WITH THIS LITTLE USE. MAY I ADD THAT I KEEP THE VEHICLE MECHANICALLY AND COSMETICALLY METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. I WOULD LIKE TO BE NOTIFIED IF THERE IS ANY ACTION TAKEN BY GMC TO RESOLVE OR REPAIR THESE ISSUES. FURTHERMORE IF ANY CLASS ACTION SUIT ARISES I WOULD LIKE TO BE NOTIFIED. THROUGH MY RESEARCH THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY CAUSING MANY ACCIDENTS. GMC SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE AND FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THANKS
