Owners have filed 283 complaints
about the 2011 Jeep Compass with NHTSA between 2011 and 2026.
The largest single group is the engine & cooling.
Across this model's run it ranks 15 of 19 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 44
Against the median year of the Jeep Compass. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 29
5.7% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 48
28% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

When owners complained
A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing
out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single
owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2011 Jeep Compass
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE19014 on September 9, 2019, to investigate 128 consumer complaints alleging that the Active Head Rest (AHR) inadvertently deployed without the occurrence of a crash or other rear impact event in model year (MY) 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. When ODI opened the investigation, ODI was aware of thirteen alleged injuries.A small number of Early Warning Reports identified driver and/or passenger front seat AHR inadvertent deployments without a rear impact event.Reported safety consequences resulting from the AHR deployments in...
Recalls on the 2011 Jeep Compass
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2016448139,513 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles in certain types of crashes, airbag and seatbelt pretensioner deployment capability may be lost due to a short in the front impact sensor wiring affecting Occupant Restraint Controller function. Failure of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy in a crash (when warranted) could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the Occupant Restraint Controller module.
Recall 201319545,427 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, due to a software error in the occupant restraint control (ORC) module, side curtain airbag and seatbelt pretensioner deployment could be delayed or not occur in slower-developing rollover events. This could increase the risk of personal injury in a crash. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the module.
Recall 20112242,270 units in Canada
Steering
Certain vehicles may have been built with a missing or incorrectly installed steering column pivot rivet. A steering column with a miss-installed rivet may not perform as intended in the event of a crash, which may increase the risk of personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect for steering column rivet presence and alignment, and repair as required.

MY WIFE AND I JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY WHERE WE WERE TRAVELING 70 MPH (RT 75 SOUTH TENNESSEE). WE CAME TO A STOP LIGHT THAT WAS RED AND APPLIED THE BRAKES. WE HEARD A LOAD SOUND FROM THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND THE WHEEL PULLED FROM MY HANDS. I EXITED THE CAR TO FIND THE LOWER A FRAME HAD BROKEN OFF THE SUB FRAME. IF THIS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON THE EXIT RAMP, WE WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED. THE POLICE AND THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND AGREED IF THIS HAPPENED AT SPEED, WE MAY HAVE BEEN HURT. TOWED THE 2011 COMPASS TO A DODGE DEALER IN CLEVELAND, TN.

S61/NHTSA 16V-668 OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER - THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT ABOUT 1 YEAR PRIOR TO THIS RECALL AND THE SAFETY BELTS DIDN'T RESTRAIN PROPERLY, AS BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE INJURED AND AFTER 19 MONTHS LATER ARE STILL BEING TREATED FOR INJURIES. THE SEAT BELT LIGHT INDICATOR WOULDN'T GO OFF WHEN NO SEAT BELT WAS ON EVEN AT SPEEDS OF 40+ MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR A FIX AND WAS TOLD THEY COULDN'T FIND SUCH AN ISSUE. IT MALFUNCTIONS PERIODICALLY AND WILL NOT GO OFF AS TO NO SEAT BELT ON WHEN GOING 40+MILES OR LIGHT WILL COME ON BUT DINGING NOISE OR SOMETIMES NOTHING WILL COME ON. THERE HAS EVEN BEEN A FEW TIMES WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER BELTS ARE ON AND SECURE. CHRYSLER ISSUED A RECALL WITH NO FIX YET, BUT WILL NOT ISSUE RENTAL OR LOANER CARS AS THEIR IS NO SAFETY ISSUE??? .I WANT TO SAY ALL THE ISSUES STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR, FIRST WITH THE VEHICLE LOCKING ME OUT OF THE CAR.THE SECURITY SYSTEM SEIZED AND I COULDN'T START MY CAR OR ANYTHING AND IT HAD TO BE TOWED AT ABOUT 9,000 MILES. THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW. FILED ANOTHER COMPLAINT ON THE DRIVE TRAIN FOR THIS VEHICLE - I HAVE HAD MANY ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE AT ALL. THEY WOULD CONTINUE TO TELL ME THE DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG. I DON'T HAVE THE EXACT DATE WITH ME - IT WAS THE END OF SEPTEMBER BEGINNING OF OCTOBER IN 2015, RIGHT AFTER THE CAR ACCIDENT. I BROUGHT IT BACK AFTER I HAD RECEIVED IT BACK FROM THE FIXES TO CAR AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND DEALERSHIP SAID THEY CHECKED EVERYTHING AND ALL IS FINE. IT ISN'T FINE AND I STILL CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES WITH IT. IT HAPPENS PERIODICALLY AND IT IS WHEN THE CAR IS MOVING.

I STARTED UP MY VEHICLE AND THE ETC LIGHT CAME ON, LET ME REMIND YOU THAT IT'S BEEN GOING ON AND OFF EVERY DAY, WELL, I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND AS SOON AS I LET OFF THE BRAKE, MY CAR ACCELERATED TO 4 RPM'S AND I HIT THE BACK END OF A FAMILY FRIEND WHO WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVE WAY. I HAD THE BODY/MECHANIC SHOP TAKE A LOOK AT IT WHILE REPAIRING THE BODY, AND THEY HAD NO FOR SURE ANSWER. I HAVE HAD 5 DIFFERENT MECHANICS LOOK AT IT AND HAD MY CODES RAN MORE THAN ONCE. IT'S RIDICULOUS. THE ETC LIGHT IS ON CONSTANTLY. IT'S ALL A MATTER WHICH DAY ITS GOING TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN AND WHICH DAY ITS GOING TO LOSE POWER. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I HAVE CALLED CHRYSLER MULTIPLY TIMES. MY ARGUMENT IS THE FACT THAT IT ISN'T SOMETHING THAT I HAVE DONE TO THE CAR. WHAT IF SOMETHING WAS TO HAPPEN AND IT CAME ON WHEN I WAS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, SOMEBODY IS WALKING ACROSS THE ROAD AND MY CAR ACCELERATES. THAT FAMILY IS GOING TO SUE ME AND MY INSURANCE AND MY INSURANCE IS GOING TO SUE CHRYSLER. IT'S SO PATHETIC, IT COSTS ALMOST $100 JUST FOR THEM TO TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG. THEN, LORD KNOWS HOW MUCH IT WILL TAKE TO ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE ALREADY SPENT ALMOST $500 TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM OURSELVES AND THAT OBVIOUSLY ISN'T WORKING. I HOPE THAT THEY'RE ARE OTHERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM SO WE CAN GET IT FIXED WHICH IT WHAT SHOULD'VE BEEN DONE A LONG TIME AGO. THERE ARE PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND NONE OF WHICH HAVE FOUND A FIX TO THE PROBLEM. MY CAR NOW HAS 114,000 MILES ON IT AND I STILL HAVE 4 YEARS LEFT TO PAY ON IT. AND QUITE FRANKLY, DUE TO THIS ISSUE I WILL PROBABLY NEVER BUY ANOTHER JEEP AGAIN, CHRYSLER AS A MATER OF FACT. I HOPE NOBODY HAS GOTTEN HURT THOUGH! THANKS! [XXX] [XXX] , [XXX] [XXX] 2/7/26 To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally express my concern regarding ongoing, critical safety issues with my vehicle, which have been increasingly dangerous while driving. These issues appear to be interconnected and involve multiple components, including the valve body, transmission, TCM, ABS module, ECM, and throttle body. These problems have posed significant risks to my safety and the safety of others on the road. On several occasions, while driving at highway speeds (approximately 70 mph), the traction control and ABS warning lights have illuminated, and the vehicle has suddenly lost acceleration. This malfunction seems to cause the car to change gears unexpectedly or, in some instances, stop accelerating altogether. As a result, I have been forced to pull over to the side of the road in order to perform a YouTube-suggested reset just to get my vehicle back in motion. This situation has nearly led to accidents, as I have found myself stranded in traffic, unable to accelerate, or worse, pulling into traffic where the car fails to accelerate, almost causing collisions with other vehicles. Additionally, during colder weather, I have experienced issues with the throttle, where it becomes erratic and unresponsive. Despite having multiple repairs made, the problem persists, and I have observed that the throttle may either rev unexpectedly or fail to shift at all. While I understand that some repairs have been made, I am deeply concerned that the vehicle's ongoing malfunctions are indicative of serious safety hazards, which should be addressed by a professional dealership, at no cost rather than being dismissed with the assertion that "it won’t hurt anything." Given the potential for life-threatening incidents and the fact that I have already had several close calls, I strongly urge that these issues be diagnosed and rectified by a certified dealership or technician. , ran out of spac INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving over a railroad track at approximately 15 MPH, the vehicle suddenly decelerated and was difficult the steer. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer, who diagnosed that the front subframe had failed due to severe corrosion, causing damage to the engine bay, and causing the engine and transmission to lower. The subframe and front lower control arms were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. Recently, while the vehicle was in for routine maintenance, the contact was informed that the rear subframe was corroded. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 98,500.

Rust thru/failure of the front cross member subframe. I noticed a clicking/rubing sound coming from the front of my 2011 Jeep Compass. Over several days it got worse. I took the car to the same dealership that I bought the car from new and was told it was a rust thru on the subframe and that the car was not safe to drive. At this point there were NO warning lights or other indication that the front end was approaching a catastrophic failure. I contacted Jeep and was told that a special 10 year extended warranty had expired in 2022. The dealer offered no help in covering the cost either. I was never informed about the extended warranty, or I would have had the car checked. The thing that really makes me mad is the rust thru occurred on only one side because the A/C drain was routed so it dripped condensation onto the frame on that side. I have the subframe and have included pictures.

SUSPENSION
Please require Jeep/Stallantis to initiate a recall for all 2008-2012 Jeep Compass' impacted by excessive corrosion to the subframe and front/rear cross members due to an inadequately designed AC drain located right above the vehicle subframe. Condensation from the AC drain drips directly onto critical frame structures. Therefore, excessive and premature rusting to the front & top sides of the subframe occurs because the subframe is constantly wet with the operation of the AC, as well as during the winter months while dehumidifying the air. Of course, road salt throughout the winter in the “salt” states further exacerbates the problem. Extensive rust to the subframes have deemed the vehicles unsafe to drive despite being in otherwise good condition w/ reasonable miles. No safety/dashboard lights, warnings, or operational concerns were present indicating potential safety concerns until the driver either experienced a dangerous driving situation or failed a vehicle inspection. Jeep has known about the significant safety implications, yet failed to effectively remediate critical safety concerns. Although Jeep extended a Front and Rear Crossmember Warranty (X69 Warranty), they neglected to properly notify vehicle owners of the extension. They did not make any type of public announcement to inform or warn drivers of the critical safety issues, did not notify owners of access to free yearly inspections to monitor the subframe. Owners using independent mechanics rather than OEM Jeep dealers have not been afforded the same opportunity to access the X69 Warranty Extension & inspections. Jeep has yet to demonstrate sufficient accountability for the ongoing critical safety and security concern. Acknowledging an insufficient AC drain design and issuing a recall for the AC drain, subframe, and front/rear cross members affirm they stand behind their brand, reputation, & value passenger and vehicle safety.
