I own a 2014 Toyota Camry with 163,000 miles. For years, I’ve experienced a noticeable shudder and vibration around 40–50 mph, which I now understand is a common defect related to the torque converter and addressed in a Toyota-issued TSB (T-SB-0168-14). I was never notified of this bulletin, despite having my car serviced regularly. Toyota and its dealers consistently failed to inform me of this issue, and now that I’m just over the mileage cap, they are refusing to assist. I feel deceived and upsold on unnecessary repairs when a known, more affordable fix existed. This is an unethical practice and a known problem that needs further federal investigation.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System - light flashes on-off and then remains illuminated. Toyota dealer wants $1,200 to replace all sensors. I do not have the ability to pay this. Dealer suggests that I just ignore or cover up. This system is a safety system as marketed by the manufacturer. I feel uncomfortable driving over mountainous routes without it. My tire dealer tells me that this is a constant problem with Toyota's.

Over the 10 years I have owned this car, it has failed to start about a dozen times. 1/2 the time I am at home and 1/2 the time I am away from home. Sometimes if you wait a few hours it will then start, often times it has to get towed to the dealer. Upon arrival at the dealership, it usually starts. The Toyota dealership has been unable to correctly diagnose the problem. As such, I spend money on repairs that do not actually fix it. The latest "diagnosis" is that the steering lock actuator motor needs to be replaced. Cost about $900. There is no guarantee that replacing this part will fix the problem. Calls to Toyota Corporation go unreturned. I call them, log a case, the case is closed without a response. Rinse and repeat. Has happened three times already. Clearly they do not care. This is a very serious problem. Below is just the latest incident that happened on 10/15/2024.

Hello, I just bought this used Camry from its original owner on 6/10/24. There is a recall for the 2012-2014 Camrys for a transmission shudder that could occur while accelerating, especially under light loads between 25-50 mph. The issue is caused by a combination of a faulty torque converter and a software glitch in the engine control module (ECM). The original owner did not have it fixed. Thus, the problem still exists. This is a safety hazard and I contacted Toyota North America who told me that they can't do anything. However, to fix the problem that Toyota issued the recall themselves, Toyota dealers need to replace to the torque converter and update the ECM software. I am reaching out to the NHTSA because this is a safety hazard and I hope you are able to help me with this. Thank you.

I own a 2014 Toyota Camry there is a known issue with the 2012-2014 Toyota Camry models for the torque converters failing. In December of 2023 I noticed my vehicle not changing gears as smoothly as it normally does so I took my vehicle to my local Toyota dealership and was told that I needed by torque converter replaced and it would be $2800. Upon my research I found out that this is a known issue for this make and model and Toyota had a warranty enhancement program for this to be fixed but it ended in 2022. I was never informed of this program and if this is a known issues and they can verify that I haven't had this repaired before then my vehicle should be fixed at the expense of Toyota. I paid the $2800 because I was told not replacing it could cause transmission problems down the road. I called Toyota and sent them proof of ownership, proof of payment for the repair and they refuse to reimburse me in any way. Can someone please look into this for me?

The touch screen needed to pair a bluetooth device for hands free usage does not work. It is not responsive to touch in any way, preventing users from pairing devices. From the looks of online forums, this is a pervasive problem for this make/model. If handsfree use is required in my state, this malfunction should be covered by warranty / toyota recall. The entire device is inoperable.

The radio/navigation system in my vehicle malfunctioned during a self starting update. My screen now stays in reboot mode. The problem is, the screen stays at full brightness whenever the car is on at night I can’t see very well to drive. The other night I was coming home with me and my kids in the car and i hit the ditch trying to turn because the screen was so bright it impaired my vision. The screen never goes off as long as the car is running and there is way to adjust the brightness.

Car has been vibrating anytime it goes above 40-45 mph. Mechanic recommended to change the cv axle which I did and I still have same problem. On highways it shakes so much that sometimes it feels like I may loose control of my steering wheel. There's a knocking sound while going on bumps and speed breakers. Check engine light came twice and it was reset by saying its false positive.

The touchscreen on the audio head unit does not function properly. I cannot pair a phone with the car's audio system because the on-screen buttons are unresponsive. This is a safety issue. I cannot use hands-free calling because I cannot pair a phone with the audio system. I started noticing issues with the touchscreen in 2018, but I was able to work around the issue. In 2020, however, I can no longer pair mobile devices to the audio system. Toyota is aware of this issue. It is widespread among several vehicle models from 2012-2014.

MY 2014 TOYOTA CAMRY CAUSES EYE IRRITATION AND BURNING. MOSTLY LIKELY THIS IS DUE TO A FAULTY HVAC SYSTEM AND/OR COMPARTMENT SEALS THAT COULD BE CHANNELING TRACE AMOUNTS OF EXHAUST FUMES INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHO SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THIS HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN I DRIVE MY OTHER CAR, I.E. MY EYES AREN'T THE PROBLEM. I AM WORRIED THAT I MAY BE INHALING SOMETHING TOXIC AND AM ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED ABOUT TAKING THE CAR ON LONG DRIVES.

TOUCHSCREEN IS PARTIALLY INOPERATIVE DUE TO FAULTY CALIBRATION. CALIBRATION STARTED CHANGING ONE YEAR AFTER PURCHASE. HASN'T BEEN A FACTOR BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN USING THE SAME PHONE. RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW PHONE AND CANNOT PAIR WITH THE SYSTEM. I DO NOT HAVE THE ABILTY TO USE THE PHONE VIA HANDS-FREE OPERATION WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS DEFECT IS VERY COMMON. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT IT (TSB 0172-16). TOYOTA TOLD ME THAT THE WHOLE RADIO TOUCHSCREEN ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. BECAUSE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND TOYOTA SHOULD FIX THIS AT NO COST. (SOME PORTIONS OF THIS COMPLAINT WERE COPIED FROM ANOTHER PERVIOUSLY SUBMITTED COMPLAINT)

THE TOUCHSCREEN HAS COMPLETELY GONE OUT AND YOU CAN NO LONGER USE TOUCH TO ACCESS CAR SETTINGS - THEREFORE NOT BEING ABLE TO CHANGE KEY FEATURES ON THE CAR. A COUPLE EXAMPLES WOULD BE AUTOMATICALLY LOCKING AND UNLOCKING THE CAR, AND DIMMING SCREEN BRIGHTNESS FOR SAFER DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE SCREEN HAS GRADUALLY GONE OUT OVER TIME AND OFFICIALLY QUIT OCTOBER 2019.

OVER 3 WEEKS LATER AND SEVERAL ATTEMPTS I GOT AHOLD OF HER. I EXPLAINED TO HER I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HORRIFIC ODOR IN THE CAR TO MY SALESPERSON AND TO A MECHANIC, AND WAS GIVEN AN AIR FRESHENER. I WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON US HIGHWAY 141IN WISCONSIN, JUST NORTH OF THE LINEVILLE RD EXIT. I WAS GOING THE SPEED LIMIT APPROX. 70 MPH. THE TEMP. WAS IN THE 60S AND THE SKY WAS OVERCAST WITH NO PRECIP. THERE WAS LITTLE TRAFFIC AND I WAS ON A FLAT STRETCH OF ROAD WITH NO VEHICLES DIRECTLY IN FRONT OR BEHIND. THERE WAS NO CONSTRUCTION AND/OR ROAD EQUIPMENT IN SIGHT. I HAD NOT DRIVEN UNDER ANY STRUCTURES. SUDDENLY MY SUNROOF EXPLODED ABOVE MY HEAD. THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AND THE INTERIOR SCREEN WAS PULLED SHUT. I DID NOT SEE ANY OBJECTS OR ANIMALS, ONLY GLASS FLYING IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR. IT WAS A TERRIFYING SOUND, LIKE A SHOTGUN BLAST. I PULLED OFF AT THE NEAREST EXIT IN A TOWING AREA AND SAW THAT THERE WAS A BIG HOLE IN THE GLASS AND SHARDS OF SHATTERED GLASS ON TOP OF THE INTERIOR SCREEN, WHICH HAD BEEN PULLED SHUT. I CALLED 911 AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. TWO BROWN COUNTY WIS. OFFICERS CAME AND LOOKED AT THE DAMAGE AND ASSESSED THERE HAD NOT BEEN ANY KIND OF GUN SHOT. THE OFFICERS DOCUMENTED THE CALL. I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE HOLDING THE INSIDE SCREEN WITH ONE HAND HOLDING IT SHUT, SO IT WOULD NOT BLOW OPEN, FOR APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES TO MEET MY HUSBAND AND SWITCH CARS.I FELT VERY UNSAFE AND WAS SHAKEN, AS I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. I HAVE READ, ONLINE, THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS AND I BELIEVE IT IS A TOYOTA MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND SAFETY ISSUE. I CALLED TOYOTA AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT BUT THEY SAID MY CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY CURRENT "PROGRAMS" AND IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR. FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT CUT BY GLASS, BUT WAS BADLY SHAKEN TO THE POINT OF FEELING NAUSEATED FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS.
