NHTSA investigations into the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2023664 202 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Issue: On certain vehicles, the recall repairs may not have been completed by a General Motors dealer during recall N222383790 and/or N222383791 (Transport Canada recall number 2022-719). As a result, a second inspection is required. On certain vehicles, the carpet could catch fire after a crash where a front seat belt pretensioner deploys. Safety Risk: A fire that occurs after a crash could create an increased risk of injury. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, install foil tape under the carpet near the front seatbelt pretensioners. On certain model year vehicles, the technician will also install seatbelt pretensioner covers.

Recall 2021631 628 units in Canada

Accessories

Issue: This recall is for certain driver's all-weather floor liners sold with new vehicles or as accessory parts sold at General Motors dealerships. On certain vehicles, the accelerator pedal could get stuck on the floor liner. If this happens, the vehicle may not slow down when you release the accelerator pedal. Note: If you continue to push the brake pedal, the brake-override system will allow you to stop the vehicle. Safety Risk: A stuck accelerator pedal could lead to unintended acceleration and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver's all-weather floor liner. You should remove the all-weather floor liner until you receive the replacement part.

Recall 2021449 9,713 units in Canada

High Voltage

Issue: On certain vehicles, the high-voltage battery could overheat when it is charged to over 90% of its capacity. As a result, the battery could create smoke or heat, which can melt or damage the battery and nearby parts. Safety Risk: A battery that overheats can create a fire risk. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and replace defective battery modules. Until replacement battery modules are available, General Motors recommends the following: 1. Enable "Hilltop Reserve" (for 2017-2018 models) or "Target Charge Level" (for 2019 models) using the vehicle's infotainment centre to limit the state of charge to 90%. If you are unable to make these changes, or do not feel comfortable making them, you should visit a dealer to have these adjustments completed. 2. Charge your vehicle more frequently and avoid depleting the battery below approximately 113 km (70 miles) of remaining range, where possible. 3. Out of an abundance of caution, park your vehicle outside immediately after charging and not leave vehicle charging indoors overnight. Recall 2018461 19,385 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, a problem with the rear brake system may cause gas bubbles to form in the brake fluid. This could cause a soft brake pedal feel and a reduction in brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will bleed the rear brakes.

Recall 2018158 2,754 units in Canada

Visual System

Certain vehicles may experience front windshield wiper stall during cold, snowy conditions due to a software error. If one or both windshield wipers were to stall, this could limit the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the front wiper motors with wiper motors containing improved software.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

Royal Oaks, CA Crash

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The incident involves a 2018 Chevy Bolt EV. I arrived at a parking space next to the electric charging station where I generally park the car. I park perpendicular to the side wall of a house. There is a small garden bed (about 2 ft wide) between the house and the parking area. As I pulled up I was not exactly perpendicular to the wall. I believe I was in Drive Low and had completely stopped or perhaps nearly stopped when I decided to tweak my parking position a bit to be exactly perpendicular to the wall. My intent was to apply the accelerator and ease over a few inches to park, but when I began to do so the car took off suddenly and uncontrollably and crashed into the side of the house. The front end of the car was damaged and the house sustained both exterior and interior damage, leaving a hole through the wall. To me, it felt like I was in a rocket launch. I don't know whether I applied the brakes or if the wall stopped the car. The car is currently at a shop where the insurance company has ordered an inspection scan for error codes. No one has driven the car since, and so the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed. No warning messages appeared before the crash although the the car is equipped with front collision warning systems. Consumer stated diagnostic report she received from her service department prior to repairing the car. to repairing the car.

Power steering assist cut out while driving and traction controllight came on. There is now no steering assist. The car is with the dealer shop and their diagnostics indicate the the steering column needs to be replaced. Dealer shop now says the steering column is on EXTREME backorder with no time estimate of availability. The car is almost impossible to steer at low speeds. The power steering rack and pinnion assembly was replaced back in August of 2023 due to the rack binding, so that part is realatively new.

NHTSA complaint #11740952 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

Oxnard, CA

STEERING

Steering randomly will fail to return to center in turns, causing the driver to have to manually turn wheel back to center. Happens in both sharp and sweeping turns in both the left and right direction while accelerating, decelerating, and maintaining speed. Issue occurs several times a week. I nearly hit an oncoming car head-on in a very gentle sweeping left hand turn on May 10th when my Bolt continued turning left rather than re-center when I stopped giving it left steering input. I was going about 35 and decelerating gently for a stop sign at a T intersection at the bottom of a mild downhill slope of 5 to 10 degrees. The car I nearly hit was approaching in the opposite lane on the inside of the curve. When the left hand curve straightened out, my steering wheel (and wheels) did not return to center. My car continued across the yellow double lines. I had to quickly jerk the wheel to the right to avoid a collision. *I had to physically return the wheel to center through manual input to get my car to drive in a straight line.* I narrowly avoided a head-on collision. There was no advance warning. Having the steering randomly behave unexpectedly and in direct opposition of the vehicle's design, and *every* other vehicle's design is very dangerous. This is a known issue across many, many Bolts. Replacing the steering rack/column for this known safety issue on all generations of the Chevrolet Bolt is an expensive repair. Please investigate and issue a safety recall and force GM to correct this known safety defect that they should have already voluntarily recalled.

STEERING

The steering fails to return to center after a turn, especially at low speed. It requires me to manually center the wheel, and can make steering difficult in low speed city driving. No warning lights or codes are displayed. Front end alignment seems to be good with very little drifting in either direction. Highway driving provides some centering of the wheel, though less than any of the vehicles I have driven. When test driving the vehicle on 9/15/25, I asked the dealership about the issue. They stated it had been inspected roughly a month prior and no issues were found with the steering, and no pending recalls existed that were related to steering. I bought the vehicle the same day and realized it had the symptoms at all times at low speeds. Chevy Bolt forums have reported the same issue, with a lot of vehicles having low miles.

STEERING

The steering rack loses its lubrication make it turn harder and could potentially fail completely leading to a loss of steering. I noticed that when I am steering around a curve the steering wheel fails to pull back to the center position and has to be manually forced back. Loss of steering or steering malfunction could lead to a fatal crash. I have not had my vehicle inspected by a dealer or mechanic but have researched the problem and many people online have reported failure of the steering rack/gear as well. There is no warning from the manufacturer about this problem and could go unnoticed until the problem is severe. The manufacturer (Chevrolet) should be required to replace this faulty part at no charge to the customer.

NHTSA complaint #11678008 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

Monterey, CA

STEERING

Sometimes, the steering wheel of the car will not return back to center after turning. The steering also feels a lot heavier. This usually happens after driving straight for a little and then having to make a turn, but may happen spontaneously in other situations as well. The steering wheel suddenly not returning to center when it is expected increases the chances of accidents, especially in areas with many curves and people/activities. The car does not show any warning signs. The dealership said they said they didn't notice it when driving and thus didn't want to further check it (they only drove it from one parking spot to another).

The steering of my 2018 Chevy Bolt is sticky. At moderate speeds and going around sweeping corners and curves, the steering becomes sticky and does not want to return to center - you must guide steering back to center and there is friction involved in pulling it back to center. This is a safety issue because the sticking does not allow the driver to sense true road conditions especially in adverse weather. The problem has been reproduced by the dealer and is commonly discussed in Chevy Bolt forums including this one: [XXX] There are no warning lights or indicators of this issue - it is something that you begin to feel with the steering.
