NHTSA investigations into the 2017 Genesis G80
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received eight Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) and eight Kia America, Inc. (Kia) Part 573 Recall Reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (ABS) modules or Hydraulic Electronic Control Units (HECU) manufactured by the equipment supplier Mando. The Part 573 Recall Reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by Mando. Safety recalls included in this Audit Query (AQ) review include: Hyundai recalls 20V-520, 20V-543,...
Recalls on the 2017 Genesis G80
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80, Genesis G90, and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles. Water may enter the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Genesis and 2017-2020 Genesis G80 vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module could malfunction and short circuit.
Risk: An electrical short circuit inside the ABS module could cause an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.

Electrical
Issue: Under certain conditions, water could leak into the starter solenoid. If this happens, the solenoid could short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit can create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to install an updated relay in the engine junction box. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

Brakes
Issue: On certain vehicles, a problem in the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) could cause it to short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuse for the ABS module. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

This vehicle experienced an engine overheating failure while driving, five days after a cooling-system repair (radiator hoses, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs) had been completed at the dealership. The dashboard displayed an explicit "Engine has overheated" warning, and the vehicle could not continue to be driven. The vehicle was returned to the dealership. Per their own written statement, there were "no signs of engine damage related to the overheating concern" at that time. The vehicle's own mileage record shows it did not leave the dealership's lot for nearly a month afterward, despite a written claim that the shop foreman had personally test driven it before release. After that release, a fractured metal bracket was found in the engine compartment near the serpentine belt, along with multiple additional loose, missing, or unseated fasteners throughout the engine bay. The dealership's technician stated he had no reason to have inspected that area. The cause of the fracture and the discrepancy with the technician's account have not been resolved. Separately, the vehicle's Lane Keeping Assistance/Lane Departure Warning system has been non-functional, was twice described by the dealership's technician as "working," and both times disproven by independent testing showing the system displaying "system off." The vehicle has also been producing smoke while driving and idling, consistent with a fluid leak burning off a hot engine component, accompanied by a worsening chemical/exhaust-like odor in the cabin, not yet diagnosed. This is reported given the overheating history, the undiagnosed cabin odor with possible carbon monoxide exposure risk, and engine-bay damage discovered following dealership service, in case relevant to safety monitoring of this repair pattern.

My 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L, VIN [XXX], has approximately 43,840 miles and intermittently slips or shifts improperly between approximately third and fifth gears while driving and causes harsh jolts forward. Jenkins Genesis confirmed the condition, stated that the transmission was slipping from the 3–5 clutch area, and recommended complete transmission replacement. The malfunction is unpredictable and creates a risk of sudden loss or interruption of propulsion while merging, crossing an intersection, changing lanes or driving at highway speed. A driver may press the accelerator but not receive the expected forward power. A [XXX] infant is regularly transported in the vehicle. The vehicle also has a faulty right-front ABS wheel-speed sensor, a passenger seat-belt safety-system communication fault, and intermittent electrical or sensor warnings. Genesis TSB 21-AT-010HG-1 applies specifically to the 2017 G80 and addresses shift flare or harsh shifting during the 2–3, 3–4 and 4–5 shifts. It requires transmission-solenoid, wiring-harness and fluid inspection procedures. TSB 19-AT-014HG also addresses harsh or delayed shifting in 2017–2018 G80 vehicles and provides electronic shift-data testing. The written repair estimate does not establish whether all applicable TSB diagnostic procedures were completed. The model also has electrical recall history, including NHTSA recalls 24V-107 and 21V-161. I am not claiming the recalls caused the transmission failure, but the concurrent transmission, ABS, seat-belt and electrical faults warrant investigation. I request that NHTSA examine similar G80 complaints involving slipping, shift flare, delayed shifting and loss of propulsion. At 63,230 miles the engine oil pressure light would illuminate on my 2017 Genesis G80. I took it to the dealer and the technician found the oil pressure switch on my car went bad and in the words of the mechanic was leaking internally. This is a known issue by Genesis/Hyundai as they are performing repairs in Korea (where this vehicle is built and assembled) for this very problem. But in America they are refusing to honor the warranty which under powertrain is valid for 10 years/100,000 miles. Proper function of the engine is clearly a part of the powertrain. The warranty further goes on to state that under engine, "gaskets and seals" are covered. The repairs I had to have performed at great expense for a failed oil pressure switch seemed clear to me under the warranty. Not only a known issue and covered where the car is made, but they seem to know they have a huge issue based on Genesis Forums and their complaints the numbers are large; they don't want to have to make it right for the owners.

Subject: Safety Concern Regarding 2017 Genesis G80 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report an ongoing issue with my 2017 Genesis G80. While driving, I have experienced a significant safety concern related to the vehicle's acceleration. Specifically, when accelerating at various speeds, the vehicle begins to jerk abruptly and violently, causing a potentially dangerous situation on the road. After seeking advice, I was informed that the problem might be related to the engine malfunctioning or failing. I am deeply concerned about the safety risks this poses, both for myself and others on the road. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or investigation into this matter to ensure the issue is addressed promptly. Thank you for your attention to this serious safety concern. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
