2023 KIA EV6 Los Angeles, CA

I charged my car at a level 3 fast charger on a road trip. After completing my charge, the AC stopped working. The fan worked but it was only blowing hot air. Normally this would be a nuisance, but the day was about 114 degrees and the car’s interior was probably close to 140 degrees. I was driving on the interstate so it was very hard to keep the windows down. The lack of HVAC made the car difficult to operate and if my family was in there would have been a safety hazard. I took it to the dealer who initially thought it need the coolant to be recharged. It turns out that the inverter for the A/C died. Apparently this has some connection to the known issues with the ICCU, which in my case just blew out and was replaced a month and a half prior to this incident.

While driving a rented 2023 Kia EV6 on the freeway, the vehicle lost power and shut down completely, without warning, on multiple separate occasions during a single trip. This occurred at highway speed in live traffic, creating a serious risk to vehicle occupants and surrounding traffic. The vehicle was a rental (Dollar Rent A Car); no external damage or collision was involved. The vehicle has since been towed.

1. Severe Safety Concerns (Battery Thermal Risk & Component Interdependency) The PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater in my vehicle has failed. This component failure has completely disabled my vehicle’s air conditioning (AC) system. In the Kia EV6 architecture, the AC compressor loop is not merely a cabin comfort feature; it is intrinsically linked to the vehicle's thermal management system responsible for cooling the high-voltage traction battery pack. California temperatures are projected to hit 110°F immediately. Without a functioning AC system, the vehicle cannot execute critical battery cooling procedures. Yesterday, when plugging the vehicle into a charger, the high-voltage battery became alarmingly hot. Forcing a lithium-ion battery pack to accept high-current DC fast charging without operational coolant loop heat rejection poses an immediate, catastrophic risk of thermal runaway and vehicle fire. I am terrified to operate, park, or charge this vehicle in upcoming extreme summer conditions. 2. Predatory Maintenance Plan Tie-In Offer Yesterday, the dealership called and acknowledged the issue. They offered to cover 70% of the diagnostic and repair labor costs under corporate goodwill, as I am technically out of the standard warranty period. However, they applied an unfair and coercive condition: I am only eligible for this safety assistance if I purchase a mandatory 2-year maintenance contract costing $120 per month (totaling $2,880 over 24 months). Because the EV6 is a fully electric vehicle, its routine maintenance profile is virtually nonexistent. The dealership explicitly stated that this contract would exclusively cover tire rotations. Charging nearly $3,000 for tire rotations as a gatekeeping mechanism to fix a dangerous battery cooling defect is highly exploitative. The cost of this forced maintenance plan essentially equals or exceeds paying for the entire repair out-of-pocket, rendering the "70% goodwill coverage" an empty gesture.

KIA has created a safety hazard by removing the ability for the driver to select LIGHT or DARK mode for the two 7" data and infotainment screens in their 2025 and forward EV6 electric cars. Like many, I have to drive in very fast busy commuter traffic on highway I-66. (exaserbated by driving into the sun in the AM) The DARK mode screens have insufficient contrast even with the screen lighting turned all the way up. It takes the drivers eyes away from the road longer than is safe, particularly in high speed freeway commuter traffic. This is seriously exacerbated if the driver uses sunglasses because of the sun. This is obviously not an issue confined to highway I-66, or me.

I had just finished charging the vehicle overnight on a Level 2 charger at a family members home. After leaving the driveway and driving a few hundred feet, an error message showed on the vehicle screen saying "Check Electric Vehicle" system, and then later a second message that said to stop the vehicle. I immediately turned the car around parked it in the driveway again and called roadside assistance to have it towed to the Kia service center. The Kia service center confirmed that it was an ICCU (integrated charging control unit) failure, which they replaced 4-5 days later after ordering the part. These error messages were the first and only indicator of the problem, there were no smaller issues leading up to the issue. Because the failure happened within a block of a family member's home, I was able to get to safety. But it could have been a completely different situation had the failure occurred even a few minutes later when I was on the freeway.

My car was / is one of thousands of Kia cars based on the eGMP platform to experience an ICCU failure. This is believed to be a design issue. While the repair was covered, reports indicate that the problem is not solved and will re-occur in time.

Was trying to drive EV. As soon as I pulled out of driveway it gave me a warning sign; to check electrical system/stop vehicle and check power supply. I couldn't drive car anywhere, had to get it towed to dealership. When tow truck arrived we couldn't turn car on, it had no power. Mind you, I had full charge on EV.

Perhaps 1 year into owning this car the apple carplay connection started going in and out-- it takes perhaps 10 to 15 seconds for it to start working again. I've tried different phones and cords. This issue is getting worse, sometimes 6 times in a 20 minute drive. Now it goes out very frequently (though it is rare in the mornings for some reason). I have brought the car into a dealership and they cannot find any issue with the car. At the recommendation of the dealership I switched the cord to an official apple cord, but when I did this the connection would be lost and I'd have to reach down, disconnect the cord, and reconnect it to get the screen to come back on-- I have since switched back to an Anker cord. There have been many drivers with the same EV6 reporting this issue in Kia FB groups. Now that the car is about 4 years old, it happens very frequently (one time 6 times in a 10 minute span). The safety issue comes in as one, some people may be reaching to disconnect and reconnect their cord while driving, which can be a distraction and may lead to increase in accidents, two, if someone is on a call they may disconnect the cord and switch to speaker, which again is a distraction, and three, I have also been using the navigation system through the carplay, and when the map goes out my turn is going up it can cause me to hesitate on whether to turn or not (and perhaps if the screen comes on at the last minute, make a quick turn, which can increase risk of collision).

We drove car 4 miles home and the car had next to no acceleration, extremely dangerous and people nearing to back end us. To try and charge vehicle response is "unsuccessful"

The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) of my KIA EV6 failed. When putting the car into reverse to leave my workplace, I heard a fuse pop and a notification appeared on dashboard screen saying "Check electric vehicle system". This is a known recall issue that I was aware could happen, and in which case the car will soon become completely inoperable, so I didn't risking driving further. I had it towed to the nearest KIA dealership, where they confirmed the ICCU had failed and replaced it at no charge under the warranty coverage. There were no warnings or symptoms prior to the failure. I was fortunate that it did not fail while I was driving.

I am not signing it, as well as it fully releases Kia from any future issues, etc. outside of the warranty and whatever other details it claims. This will or should be the last for me to file. I had no idea they send me this kind of offer. As it is listed specifically as a "GOODWILL GESTURE" and they are not accepting fault or something like that. I attached inidividual pages, hopefully I can upload them as pdfs, we will see. initial filed #11708370 (1/2/2026) 2nd filed #11717025 (2/10/26) Yesterday afternoon (2/10/26), I was told by Jim Shorkey Kia Wexford PA that no error codes are on the EV6, it is ready for pick up. Before I received this call, there was a software update done on the EV6 (see service records) I attached 2 photos of the software update as well. ICCU ASSY was replaced, etc. was told per Shorkey Kia since there are no issues with my EV6, as of Friday when they initially called to say my vehicle was ready for pick up, Kia considers my problem resolved. I know I’ll be paying for the car rental for X number of days, even though the EV6 did not get the software update until this past Tuesday, yesterday 2/10/26, which cleared the 3 codes that were still showing on the Kia app earlier morning yesterday, screenshot of that attached as well. I have my car, no codes visible now.

prior case 11708370 filed 1/2/2026 spoke with [XXX] 1/22/2026. Friday 2/6/2026 Shorkey Kia Wexford calls and tells me my EV6 is fixed I can pick it up. I go into the Kia App and still have the same 3 codes as before; P056216 VCU, C160404 FR_Radar, and C28B186 ADAS_DRV. I tell them later that day when I had time to open the app to make sure the codes were corrected, called them back and said until these codes are cleared, my vehicle is not fixed. Tuesday 2/10/2026 I get a called from same person at Shorkey Kia in Wexford, telling me my vehicle is fixed, I can pick up my vehicle, same person her name is Maggie. I told Maggie to hold while I bring up the Kia app, I still see the same 3 codes: P056216, C160404, C28B186. I told her the codes are still active, and as long as these codes are present, the car isn’t fixed. She wouldn’t tell me what was done to the car, so I don’t know if the ICCU was replaced or not. However from browsing the EV6 Owners USA group, [XXX] had the same issue, and his car was fixed per whatever Kia place that is around him. He still has the P056216 alert and was told it will go away after whatever period of time. This is what the Kia repair place told him. NHTSA complaint #11717025 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2024 KIA EV6 Maplewood, NJ

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Driving with my wife and [XXX] child, there was a pop sound from under the car, and the car suddenly showed multiple faults, including "Check electric vehicle system”, which cleared on their own. I parked and turned the car off and on again and the faults reappeared. I started driving home, and during the drive it showed "Stop vehicle and check power supply" and audibly alarmed. As I was only half a mile from my house on local quiet roads, I made it. A few minutes later, I tried to turn on the car and some displays were off, there was no drive power, the steering wheel did not turn, the door locks were flakey, and I wasn't able to tell if I had shifted into Park or if the parking brake was engaged. When the tow truck arrived, the car was completely unresponsive and there was no way to release the parking brake or shift the car in neutral, so the car was dragged across the pavement and onto the tow truck. The failure was quick and comprehensive and could have easily caused injury. There are many highways near me with fast, busy traffic and either no emergency shoulder or a very narrow one. If my car tells me that I need to stop the vehicle, that can create a very dangerous choice between stopping somewhere less safe quickly or risking the car being completely disabled while in the travel lane while I look for a safer spot. Loss of cabin heat can easily become dangerous very quickly in the winter. Many drivers may not even understand the urgency of the warning until the car starts failing to drive. The car is at a Kia dealership for repair who confirmed an ICCU failure. See related NHTSA recall no 24V-867 and others. ICCU failures are endemic to Kia and Hyundai EVs. ICCU failures are widely discussed on many internet forums and seem much more common than the 1% failure rate claimed by Hyundai/Kia. FYI, an interesting root cause analysis was shared on a German EV forum: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
