FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I own a 2018 Toyota Sequoia experiencing fuel pump failure symptoms including extended crank and loss of power. This issue matches NHTSA Recall 20V012000, which affects similar vehicles with the same fuel pump defect. However, my VIN is not included in the recall despite identical symptoms and safety risk. I am requesting investigation into whether additional VINs, including mine, should be included in this recall due to ongoing failures.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that after several attempts, the vehicle started. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle drove abnormally rough. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V012000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not associated with the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The vehicle fuel tank was punctured and then patched with JB Weld Epoxy. This vehicle was sold to me by a private owner that did not disclose this information to me. The safety of my family as well as thousands of others were at risk as the vehicle was parked in several parking garages of large buildings. The fuel tank and fuel pump has been replaced by Lewis Toyota of Topeka, KS. Several occurrences of a strong fuel smell had taken place for the two week time frame from the previous owner selling it to me. A fuel smell was present at inspection before purchase, however the owner stated that he had spilled fuel.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Fuel filler door hinge and pin does not work properly. The hinge, door, and pin are bent. This prohibits 1) opening the door, 2) filling the gas tank, and 3) the door from closing properly. The spacing around the door is not equal and is askew, tilted to the bottom right and dips inward. Toyota seems to have used this design on other models, eg Camry, Sienna, etc. I located a NHTSA Customer Support Bulletin for those models with a similar fuel filler door hinge and pin design; however, I was not able to not locate one for a 2019 Toyota Sequoia. Your website does not allow video uploads, so 3 photos are attached: 1) widest point the door will open with assistance, 2) widest door will open without assistance, and 3) the door closed. Please look into this matter. Please 1) provide replacement for current owners, and 2) send feedback to Toyota to engineer a better option for future vehicles. Many thanks,

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Toyota had a recall on fuel pumps in 2020 mine was not part of the recall even though mine went bad and had to be replaced in February 2020. Now with another fuel pump recall issued in January 2025 I am also told mine is not part if the recall however I am having issues related to the fuel pump once again causing my engine to stall. Can someone please look into this as I feel my car should be part of that recall for another failing fuel pump. I do have receipt of repair in 2020 by First Class HALT I can provide if needed. My engine is stalling, not cycling fuel properly and has left me stranded. Then other times fires up normally.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The gas tank on my vehicle started leaking. It has a crack in the tank. I have not been in an accident nor have I hit anything to cause damage to my vehicle. The vehicle had been parked for approximately 6 hours in my work parking lot when I was notified that the tank was leaking.

2002 Toyota Sequoia North Brunswick, NJ

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Rack and pinion rusted out and had to be replaced. It cracked in the middle of the highway and left me inching to safety. Never fully recovered 186k, frame is fully rusted and will not pass inspection due to faulty oxygen sensors and excessive rust and corrosion. Will need to replace exhaust to input a new sensor at 4k Vechicle is fully operable and functional but cannot pass inspection without the safety of rust treatment or replacement It’s a great vechicle but unfortunate that the 2002 series is left out of the recall . There are a lot of early generations that have these issues and although the trucks are reliable and have a long life , are undriveable because they can’t pass inspection. Please consider extended the rust recall to 2001-2003 Sequoias. This was my grandfathers truck and really would like to keep his memory in the family and drive my grandfathers truck as it still runs perfectly but has on going issues with rust and frame issues . There was an extended warranty for 2002 Sequoias that expired in 2014. This is a point where most Sequioas weren’t experiencing this issue. Dealership or recall will not honor and denied any claim for rust It is unfortunate because I am now disabled and love my Sequoia so much and was hoping to drive to appointments and gain my health back. It has become more than I am able to afford to fix an entire frame of the vehicle. It’s evident that early generations all that his issue but has not been honored for repair. I’ve repaired things over the years with hopes to pass inspection and now have insight as to what the real issue is. The excessive rust and damage to the frame.

Malfunction indicator lights - Check engine, VSC off and TRAC off. The vehicle goes into limp mode. The issue is both a mechanical and engineering defect causing the override of the entire AIP system. Parts affected are Air injection pumps, Air switching valves, Air pump inlets/covers, Gaskets/connectors/clamps and Speed sensors.

2003 Toyota Sequoia Houston, TX

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My gas gauge sensor consistently drops below the “E” marker when the truck has gas in it and especially when it is filled up. After driving about 50 miles or so, the gauge will move up some ; however, I have been relying on my DTE monitor to let me know about gas. I have taken it to the dealer twice and both said “the gas tank needs to be dropped in order for repair” I was About to pay for the service but was told I had to make an appointment. However the service advise ask had I had it replaced before because there was a recall on that particular part several years ago. Please note I have never received any notice about a recall regarding the issue. Please advise.

2018 Toyota Sequoia at 18,000 miles Albuquerque, NM

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I TOOK MY 2018 TOYOTA SEQUOIA (VIN: [XXX]) ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 FOR THE SIX-MONTH TOYOTACARE SERVICE TO AMERICAN TOYOTA LOCATED AT 5995 ALAMEDA BLVD NE, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87113 WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE SIX-MONTH TOYOTACARE SERVICE WILL INCLUDE FIXING ANY PENDING SAFETY RECALL. HOWEVER, AFTER THE SERVICE, WHEN I CHECKED THE PAPERWORK, I FOUND OUT THAT THE PENDING SAFETY RECALL (MANUFACTURER RECALL: 20TA02, NHTSA RECALL: 20V012) WAS NOT FIXED AND IT WAS CLAIMED THAT THERE WERE NO SAFETY RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE (SEE THE ATTACHED PAPERWORK). I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE AMERICAN TOYOTA AND THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE DIDN'T GIVE ME A REASONABLE REASON SO I DEMANDED TO TALK A MANAGER. THE MANAGER DIDN'T KNOW WHY THE SAFETY RECALL WAS NOT FIXED SO HE PROMISED TO DO SOME INVESTIGATIONS AND GET BACK TO ME. LATER, A SENIOR MANAGER FROM THE AMERICAN TOYOTA CALLED ME AND GAVE ME THE FOLLOWING REASONS FOR NOT FIXING THE SAFETY RECALL: - I SPECIFICALLY DIDN'T ASK FOR SAFETY RECALL TO BE FIXED - AMERICAN TOYOTA DIDN'T HAVE A CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME TO FIX THE SAFETY RECALL - AMERICAN TOYOTA MADE FALSE STATEMENT ON THE SERVICE PAPERWORK THAT THERE WAS NO SAFETY RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE WHEN I TALKED TO THE SENIOR SERVICE MANAGER AT AMERICAN TOYOTA, HE PROMISED TO GET THE DATABASE AND PAPERWORK UPDATED SOON BUT AS OF TODAY (THREE WEEKS LATER) I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A CORRECTED PAPERWORK FROM THE AMERICAN TOYOTA. I SEE THIS A SYSTEMATIC ISSUE AT AMERICAN TOYOTA TO FALSELY MARK THE SERVICE PAPERWORK AS NO PENDING SAFETY ISSUE IF THE CUSTOMER DIDN'T ASK FOR FIXING A SAFETY ISSUE AND/OR IF A CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN IS NOT AVAILABLE. CODE P2440 CAN DAIRY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM SWITCHING VALVE STUCK OPEN BANK 1. VEHICLE HAS 71,000 MILES ON IT BEEN INFORMED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL AND THE TOYOTA SHOULD'VE ISSUED A RECALL. CAUSES HIGH RPM START AND LOSS OF POWER ACCELERATION.

2007 Toyota Sequoia at 198,000 miles Ridgefield, CT

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

VSC, TRACTION CONTROL AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS RANDOMLY COME ON AND VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSES ACCELERATION AND RUNS ROUGH. I TRIED PUTTING ON NEW GAS CAP TO NO AVAIL. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED GOING UP A HILL WHEN THE LIGHTS SUDDENLY CAME ON AND I LOST POWER. IT HAS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AS WELL LEAVING ME UNABLE TO SAFELY ACCELERATE . MECHANIC REPORTS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH TOYOTAS AND COSTLY TO FIX. STATED THAT TOYOTA FIXED THE PROBLEM IN 2008 MODELS BUT NOT IN 2007.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

THIS COMMUNICATION IS IN REFERENCE TO A KNOWN FUEL PUMP PROBLEM FOR WHICH WE RECEIVED AN INTERIM NOTICE OF RECALL SOME TIME PRIOR TO 5/7/2020 (EXACT DATE UNKNOWN DUE TO COVID SHUT DOWN DELAYS). THERE IS STILL NO REMEDY/REPLACEMENT PART AVAILABLE. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TIER 2 SUPPORT HAS SUGGESTED THAT I REACH OUT THROUGH NHTSA FOR ASSISTANCE IN EXPEDITING A SOLUTION THROUGH TOYOTA MANAGEMENT. THE REASON THIS IS SO CRITICAL IS THAT THIS VEHICLE IS PART OF AN EMERGENCY SERVICES FLEET OWNED BY DOWNSTREAM CASINO RESORT, AN ENTERPRISE OF THE QUAPAW NATION (TRIBAL). IT IS A SPECIALTY VEHICLE WHICH CARRIES LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL AND CANINE OFFICERS TO AND FROM MULTIPLE TRIBAL ENTERPRISES AND OTHER LOCATIONS AS REQUESTED BY OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. PERIODICALLY TRAVEL OCCURS AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED AND OVER LONG DISTANCES, UP TO 400 MILES. RELIABILITY OF THE VEHICLE IS CRITICAL TO THE LIVES OF THOSE IN IT, THOSE THEY SERVE, AS WELL AS THOSE THEY COULD POTENTIALLY BE TRAVELING TO ASSIST. IF THIS KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART FAILS DURING ONE OF THOSE PROCESSES IT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC. WE PURCHASED THESE VEHICLES NEW FROM A MANUFACTURER WE BELIEVED COULD SERVE THE RELIABILITY NEEDS OF OUR FLEET. WHILE WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS UNKNOWN POSSIBILITIES, WE ARE DISAPPOINTED THAT A REMEDY IS STILL NOT AVAILABLE, AND WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO OBTAIN A COMMITMENT FOR AN EXPEDITED REMEDY TO, WHAT FOR US, IS A CRITICAL CONCERN. AGAIN, AS SUGGESTED, BY TOYOTA CUSTOMER SUPPORT, WE ARE REQUESTING ASSISTANCE IN PUSHING FOR AN EXPEDITED REMEDY. THANK YOU, [XXX], RISK MANAGER, DOWNSTREAM CASINO RESORT - AN ENTERPRISE OF THE QUAPAW NATION [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *CC

THE CAR DOESN'T WANT TO START. ALL LIGHTS ARE ON THE DASHBOARD. THE CAR RUNS TERRIBLY AND STALLS AT TIMES. THE CODE STATES THE FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN ON BACKORDER FOR 5 WEEKS. OVER 1300 REQUESTS FOR THE PART IN THIS AREA ALONE. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH OTHER SEQUOIAS AS WELL.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

MY 2014 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IS STALLING AT LOW SPEEDS, I.E. WHEN MAKING U TURNS OR SLOWING UP AND PRESSING THE GAS, THERE IS A 5-7 SECOND DELAY IN THE ENGINE RESPONDING, THIS IS CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN YOU NEED TO GET OUT ON A BUSY ROAD AND YOU DON'T HAVE THE POWER NEEDED. I HAVE SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WITH STILL NO RESOLUTION AND RECENTLY HAD THE SPARK PLUGS REPLACED. I HAVE READ ON NEWER MODELS THE FUEL PUMPS HAVE HAD A RECALL, BUT AT THIS TIME NOT THE 2014. PLEASE NOTE FOR THE QUESTION BELOW, WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN, ITS BEEN GOING ON NOW FOR OVER A YEAR.
