Owners have filed 415 complaints
about the 2006 Ford Taurus with NHTSA between 2005 and 2024.
The largest single group is the acceleration & cruise control.
Across this model's run it ranks 22 of 27 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 28
Against the median year of the Ford Taurus. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 57
11.1% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 12
7% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA investigations into the 2006 Ford Taurus
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Preliminary Evaluation (PE)12-005 was opened to investigate allegations of speed control cables detaching from the throttle body and subsequently interfering with the throttle closing fully to the idle position in model year (MY) 2005 and 2006 Ford Taurus vehicles. The speed control cable, throttle body attachment arm (?nail head?) for the speed control cable, cable mounting bracket and cable routing for the MY 2005 and 2006 Ford Taurus are common to all MY 2004 through 2006 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles equipped with either the 155 HP 3.0L 2-valve Vulcan engine or the 200 HP 3.0L 4-va...
Recalls on the 2006 Ford Taurus
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

On certain vehicles, the windshield wiper motor may have been produced without grease applied to the output shaft gear. After a period of continuous use on the high-speed setting, lack of grease may cause the gear teeth to distort and/or fracture during operation, resulting in the loss of wiper function. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, apply grease to the output shaft gear.

SERVICE BRAKES
FORD MOTOR COMPANY SOLD MY VEHICLE WITH A LIFE-THREATENING DESIGN DEFECT IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS DESIGN DEFECT COMPRISES A PLASTIC COVER OVER THE STAINLESS STEEL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINES WHERE THOSE LINES PASS FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR TO ITS REAR BENEATH THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE OSTENSIBLE PURPOSE OF THE PLASTIC COVER IS UNKNOWN TO ME, BUT ITS ACTUAL FUNCTION IS TWOFOLD. FIRST, IT TRAPS MOISTURE AND ROAD SALT TO CAUSE RAPID CORROSION OF THE STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES, WHICH CORROSION EVENTUALLY CAUSES THE LINES TO RUST COMPLETELY THROUGH, CAUSING ONE OR BOTH LINES TO BURST UPON APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES, RESULTING IN SUDDEN AND COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. SECOND, THE PLASTIC COVER HIDES THAT CORROSION FROM VIEW SO THAT CAREFUL VISUAL INSPECTION DOES NOT REVEAL THE CORROSION PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO THE KNOWLEDGEABLE MECHANIC WHO REPAIRED MY BRAKES AND WHO HAS EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PROBLEM, THE DESIGN DEFECT APPLIES TO BOTH FORD TAURUS AND FORD FOCUS MODELS. THAT MECHANIC HAS IN THE PAST URGED FORD TO RECALL THESE CARS BUT FORD HAS TO DATE REFUSED TO DO SO. PRESUMABLY THE DESIGN DEFECT OCCURS ALSO IN THE MERCURY SABLE WHICH IS MERCURY'S TWIN TO THE FORD TAURUS. THIS DESIGN DEFECT CAUSE MY BRAKES TO FAIL SUDDENLY AND COMPLETELY, CAUSING ME TO HIT ANOTHER CAR. FORTUNATELY THE DAMAGE RESULTED IN NO PERSONAL INJURIES, BUT IT CAUSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO MY CAR AND PRESUMABLY COMPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE OTHER CAR. BUT IF THE BRAKE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED AS I WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT, OR IF I HAD BEEN BRAKING FOR A PEDESTRIAN, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. I AM ATTACHING THREE PHOTO FILES, ONE TAKEN AT THE REPAIR SHOP WHERE I HAD THE BRAKE REPAIR DONE, THE SECOND A MARKED-UP COPY OF THE SAME PHOTO, THE THIRD A ZOOMED-IN PORTION OF THE FIRST PHOTO SHOWING THE SITE OF THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE.

Intermittent accelerator sticking. After lifting foot from accelerator to prepare for braking/stopping the car continues to accelerate. Safety is at risk in traffic and intersections. There is online documentation related to previous NHTSA investigations. Ford and the local dealership has stated that there is not a defined recall. Although there may not be a “recall” this is certainly a safety problem!!

It has been repaired since the incident. Yes, was reproduced by the tow truck driver as well as at a service center. Splines on Torque converter stripped out causing vehicle to just rev up and slow down to a stop. Car never moved again, had I been going up a large hill or something this could have been VERY VERY bad, because it wasn't until I was stopped that I realized it was the transmission having problems. After a bit of research and $500 in parts. I did the work myself. I find that the material inside of the torque converter is way softer than that on the input shaft causing the torque converter to strip out? How do they not have to fix that? This has been going on for over a decade! Why does someone have to die before they are responsible for something they know has a problem!

Car engine accelerate on own. Tac meter shows over 3,000 RPM when I put it in neutral. I have to tap the accelerator and it goes back to normal. This happens about once a week now. I was slowing down for a stoplight and it happened. Brakes were not enough. Almost hit a car. Only by throwing into neutral allowed me to gain control and stop. My mechanic couldn’t find anything. I cannot allow anyone else to drive this as I am the only one familiar to handle it. I’ll probably sell it on a trade. I’ve read dozens of reports of this but no recall. I am surprised. I WAS DRIVING ON A 2-LANE HIGHWAY WITH A RELATIVELY STEEP DOWNHILL GRADE. I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. I THOUGHT AT FIRST THAT IT WAS JUST ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY, BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT THE THROTTLE MUST BE OPEN SINCE I WAS QUICKLY ACCELERATING TO SPEEDS ABOVE 65MPH, AND THE BRAKES WERE NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN IF THE ACCELERATION WERE DUE ONLY TO THE HILL. I SAW A PLACE UP AHEAD TO PULL OVER, BUT I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD IN ORDER TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK VERY QUICKLY AND TURNED IT OFF SINCE THE ENGINE WAS RACING. THERE WAS A GREAT DEAL OF SMOKE COMING FROM MY FRONT BRAKES, WHICH WAS VERY DISCONCERTING. I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD COME UNFASTENED AND HAD CAUSED THE THROTTLE TO STICK OPEN. THIS SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS AND I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
