Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness

The straps for the car seat do not secure and are easily untightened. The issue is solely with the Nuna Rava car seat and not the vehicle. My 1 year old was completely unstrapped after driving because he was playing with the straps. After investigating I found I could easily untighten the straps with one hand without pushing the button to release the tension on the straps. Food debris got underneath the strap and was preventing the mechanism on the button from keeping tension on the straps, rendering the car seat useless. My wife called the manufacturer twice and left voicemails but has not been contacted back, I searched the internet and found multiple cases of this and the fix. I have videos showcasing this, but they are too large to upload.

CHILD SEAT:HARNESS/CROTCH STRAP

The contact owns a 2023 Honda Odyssey with a 2023 Nuna Rava Convertible car seat, Model Number: CS1501, Model Year 2023, installed in the rear center seat. The contact stated that the restraint belts failed to tighten and properly restrain the child. The failure occurred with the restraint belts being properly locked. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and sent a replacement strap; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case had been opened. The contact was still awaiting a return phone call from the manufacturer with a possible remedy. The failure mileage for the vehicle was 31,323.

CHILD SEAT

The contact owns a Diono car seat, Model Type: Cambria 2, Model Number: 31242 NA 01, Manufactured Date: January 9, 2024. The car seat was installed in a 2013 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the contact noticed an object in the middle of the road. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a cement wall. The contact stated that the side curtain air bag deployed as designed but caused the headrest of the car seat to collapse onto the forearm of the child seated in the car seat. Medical attention was provided, and the child was taken to the local emergency room. The child suffered an arm injury. A Police report was filed; however, the Police report number was not provided to the contact. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the cause of the failure was not yet determined; however, the car seat manufacturer had opened a case. The car seat was not replaced. The vehicle failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.

The chest clip is opening without having to press down the buttons to release it. It is magnetic and I'm able to open it with my non-dominant hand. I am not sure exactly how the child's safety was put at risk, but I imagine it is not safe to have a chest clip that can undo easily. The seat has not been inspected.

The car seat’s affiliated app and buckle’s vehicular heatstroke prevention technology didn’t work right, and a potential privacy safety concern. A colleague and I (both CPST-I’s) were demoing her seat. 1- Privacy concern: I was able to download the app and connect to her seat from outside her vehicle, gaining access to her child’s name, child’s birthdate, and a map that showed me the approximate location of where she drove. The seat owner did not have to approve my access to her seat. A stranger could access a child’s personal information with this lack of security. I was given “limited access” as the second connector but was actually able to see more details than the seat’s owner 2- The heatstroke prevention technology- the car seat buckle and affiliated app- glitched several times. It showed different alerts between two apps that accessed the same car seat. User A is car seat owner, user B is me: -After the car seat was buckled for a 1.5 hour drive in User A’s car, user A’s app logged 0 minutes in the seat. User B’s app showed accurate time the seat was buckled. -When the seat was buckled, User A and User B received completely different “child left in car” alerts at different times. The seat was left buckled overnight and did not alert user A or B that a child was left in the car. Despite receiving no alert, user B’s app logged the child having sat 7 hours in car seat overnight. -When the seat was left unbuckled and empty, user A received an alert that the child was still in the seat. Despite getting that alert, their app still showed 0 minutes logged in the seat. 3. The app says “buckled securely” when the buckle stalk is flipped up toward the child and didn’t actually require any buckling of either buckle or chest clip. 4. The app said the seat was installed correctly when it wasn't, and the installation directions wouldn’t continue unless the load leg was in place, which some vehicles don’t allow didn’t get great pics.

The contact owns a Dorel Disney Baby Car Seat, Model Name: Light ‘N Comfy 35, Manufactured Date: August 06, 2021, installed in a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while placing the car seat onto the base in the vehicle, the car seat would not latch securely. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the car seat was not included in a recall. The car seat was not replaced.

I removed the car seat cover to wash and discovered there was a crack in the hard foam of the head piece. It completely separated the two side of the headpiece and the side was coming away from the hard plastic base on one side. When I removed the cover completely, half of the head rest piece fell off. This is the 2nd Chicco MyFit car seat that I have had because the first one was replaced under warranty for this very same problem. The biggest issue is that the foam is breaking and coming loose underneath the cover so I don't know how long it has been like this. This compromises the safety of my child if we were to get in an accident. The head protection is obviously important, especially in a side impact crash but with the hard foam broken in half, it is useless.

The contact indicated that the magnetic strap buckle had clicked to close but did not stay close and secured. The failure had occurred on two separate but same model car seats. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred overtime on both car seats. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered to send replacement parts.

We were leaving a car dealership to head home, my husband put our toddler in his car seat and after doing the pinch test, pulled on the chest buckle to make sure it was tight enough. When he pulled the chest buckle, it loosened both harness belts. We attempted the same scenario over 20 times and each time you could pull on the chest clip and retract both harness belts. Without pushing the button to retract. Nothing is stuck in the car seat as our child doesn't eat or drink in his seat. We uninstalled and reinstalled, opened the seat, etc and there is no issue that we could correct. Our son's life was in danger driving home last night. If we were to have gotten in an accident, the force of the crash would have jolted his body forward and loosened the harness.

MY TODDLER TRAVELS WITH ME UP TO 4 ROUND TRIPS A DAY. IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS, HER CARSEAT HAS BEEN GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO UNCLICK. YOU HAVE TO PUSH VERY HARD TO GET THE RED BUTTON TO CLICK OPEN. SOMETIMES ONE SIDE WOULD CLICK OPEN, THEN THE NEXT TIME BOTH SIDES WOULD STICK. TODAY, WE WERE ON AN OUTING (FOR MOTHER'S DAY), AND WE SPENT OVER 45 MINS. TRYING TO UNBUCKLE HER FROM THE SEAT. I TRIED VERY HARD AS WELL AS A LARGE GENTLEMAN NEARBY IN THE PARKING LOT WHO HAPPENED TO NOTICE ME IN DISTRESS. MY TODDLER BECAME INCREASINGLY UPSET AS IT WAS GETTING SCARY FOR HER. THE MAN WAS ALSO SHOCKED TO SEE THAT HE WASN'T GETTING IT UNBUCKLED WITH STRONG FORCE. WE DEBATED CUTTING IT APART; WE ALSO DEBATED CALLING 911 TO HAVE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT UNLEASH IT. I RULED BOTH OUT BECAUSE WE WANTED TO GIVE IT A FEW MORE MINUTES. SO TO GET HER OUT, WE LOOSENED UP THE STRAPS AS MUCH AS WE COULD AND SQUEEZED HER FROM THE SEAT. WE SPENT ANOTHER TEN MINUTES OR SO CONTINUALLY TRYING TO UNCLICK THE BELT. IT'S SHOCKING TO ME - ALTHOUGH THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. IT HAS NEVER TAKEN MORE THAN 3-5 MINUTES TO UNCLICK THE HARNESS. I'VE GOT NO CHOICE BUT TO KEEP USING THE SEAT UNTIL WE CAN GET RESOLUTION FROM GRACO. I DO PLAN ON CONTACTING THEM FIRST THING IN THE MORNING (MONDAY MORNING 5/13/2013) WITH THE HOPE THAT THEY WILL ALLOW ME TO RECEIVE ANOTHER MODEL OF CARSEAT - AND RETURN THIS ONE TO THEM. I HAVE NOT KEPT THE RECEIPT FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE FROM TARGET, SO I'M CERTAIN THEY CANNOT EXCHANGE IT. MY SON IS 9 AND HAS CEREBRAL PALSY HE WEIGHTS 98 LBS AND DUE TO HIS CONDITION HE CANNOT SIT ON A BOOSTER AND IS LARGE ENOUGH TO SIT IN A REGULAR SEAT. WE ARE USING THIS HARNESS SLOG WITH THE LAP SHOULDER BELT INSTITUTION ALONG WITH THE LOCKING CLIP (ITEM G ON THE OWNERS MANUAL). HOWEVER THE LOCKING CLIP IN THE ILLUSTRATION IS NEXT TO THE LATCH PLATE. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS CONFIGURATION DOES NOT WORK IN OUR HONDA ODYSSEY - AS WELL AS MOST OTHER CARS THE LOCKING CLIP HAS TO BE PLACED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE AS IF YOU DO NOT THE SHOULDER BELT WILL NOT BE HELD IN A SECURE POSITION- WHEN I ASKED THEM IF THIS POSITION HAD BEEN CRASH TESTED - THEY TOLD ME YES BUT COULD PROVIDE NO DOCUMENTATION. I SUSPECT THAT MY TODDLER IS KICKING IT OPEN ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT WITNESSED THIS EVENT. THIS EVENT HAS OCCURRED 3 TIME ON ONE SEAT AND ONCE ON ANOTHER SEAT. I OWN 5 SUNSHINE KIDS RADIAN XTSL SEATS. ALL OF THEM HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE COMPANY HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE THROUGH A RECALL OR EVEN A MENTION OF IT ON THEIR WEBSITE. ALL OF THE CARSEATS BECOME LOOSE AFTER PROPER INSTALLATION. THE BELT THAT IS USED TO TIGHTEN THE SEAT HAS A FAULTY MECHANISM THAT ALLOWS THE CARSEAT TO BECOME SO LOOSE THAT IT FALLS TO THE SIDE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS CAR SEAT HAS NOT BECOME RECALLED YET. THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND EVEN A SAFETY CAMPAIGN TO RECALL THESE SEATS STARTED BY PARENTS. THE LATCH BELT LOOSENS ITSELF IN DAILY USE. WE HAVE NOTICED IT A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TIMES AND NOW CHECK IT ROUTINELY. IT ALWAYS LOOSENS.
