Owners have filed 617 complaints
about the 2008 Honda Odyssey with NHTSA between 2008 and 2026.
The largest single group is the brakes.
Across this model's run it ranks 8 of 32 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 58
Against the median year of the Honda Odyssey. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 85
16.4% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 62
36% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA investigations into the 2008 Honda Odyssey
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC (Delphi) is recalling certain replacement fuel pump modules, part number FG1155-11B1, sold for use in 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The affected fuel pump may send an incorrect fuel reading to the fuel gauge possibly causing the vehicle to run out of fuel. The fuel gauge will always read 3/4 full to full regardless of the actual level.
Risk: A vehicle that runs out of fuel and stalls has an increased risk of a crash.
14V112000
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump strainer cover may deteriorate allowing fuel to leak out.
Risk: A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.
13V500000
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
American Honda Motor Company (Honda) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured August 8, 2006, through September 8, 2008. Due to a combination of system components and software, the Vehicle Safety Assist System (VSA) may apply the brakes unexpectedly.
Risk: The vehicle may suddenly and unexpectedly brake hard, and without illuminating the brake lights, increasing the risk of a crash from behind.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 ODYSSEY VEHICLES, THE GAS-FILLED STRUTS THAT HELP TO RAISE AND SUPPORT THE LIFTGATE OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A POWER LIFTGATE SYSTEM MAY BE PRONE TO EARLY LIFE FAILURES DUE TO A MANUFACTURING FLAW. THE FLAW CAN RESULT IN A LEAK OF THE PRESSURIZED GAS, LEADING TO REDUCED STRUT PERFORMANCE.
Risk: STRUTS WITH DIMINISHED PERFORMANCE CAN LEAD TO UNEXPECTED CLOSURE, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
10V098000
SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
HONDA HAS NOTIFIED NHTSA OF A DEFECT IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 ODYSSEY AND ELEMENT PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JULY 28, 2006 AND AUGUST 21, 2008. AIR CAN ENTER THE VSA MODULAR PUMP DURING AN INITIAL SELF-CHECK PROCESS THAT OCCURS SHORTLY AFTER EACH TIME THE ENGINE IS STARTED. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ENOUGH AIR TO ENTER THE SYSTEM TO RESULT IN A BRAKE PEDAL THAT FEELS SOFT OR LOWER TO THE FLOOR.
Risk: IF THE OWNER DOES NOT HAVE ANY BRAKE SERVICE OR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED OVER A PERIOD OF MONTHS OR YEARS, THE SYSTEM CAN CONTINUE TO ACCUMULATE ENOUGH AIR TO AFFECT BRAKING PERFORMANCE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 201407663,328 units in Canada
Fuel System
On certain vehicles, the fuel pump strainer could deteriorate and crack. This could result in a fuel smell and/or fuel leak. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel strainer cover.
Recall 201338124,692 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles, due to a defect in the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system, the brakes may apply unexpectedly while the vehicle is being driven without the driver pressing on the brake pedal. If this were to occur, the brake lamps would also fail to illuminate. These issues could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.
Recall 20120592,790 units in Canada
Other
On certain vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system, the gas-filled struts (which help to raise and support the liftgate) may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw. This could allow the liftgate to drop suddenly, placing anyone beneath or near the gate at risk of personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace both liftgate struts.
Recall 201007928,827 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles, during the self-check process that occurs shortly after each time the engine is started, the self-diagnostic software for the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) brake modulator causes a condition that can allow air to enter the modulator pump. Over time, and after starting the engine numerous times, it is possible for enough air to enter the system to change the brake pedal feel and affect braking performance. Reduced braking performance could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will remove existing air in the brake system then apply sealant and caps to the VSA modulator to prevent air from entering the brake system.

ENGINE
The engine malfunctioned, and the car is available for inspection upon request? My safety was put at risk because the car was backfiring in traffic due to the spark plugs filling up with oil. I reported the problem to the Libertyville Honda because they sold me the vehicle about 35 days before the issue started, but I have not heard back from them. I had the Odyssey inspected at Napleton Honda in Oak Lawn. They informed me that piston rings 1-3 needed to be replaced . They also informed me that due to malfunctioning piston rings at least one of the spark plugs was full of oil. The car also needs a new oxygen sensor and this could also be caused by the engine malfunction. No warning lights came on prior to the failure.

On my car there was a recall on the fuel pump filter housing. I've been to a dealer with this where they didn't replace the case. The car started to smell like gasoline. I opened the pump cover and saw a crack in the pump filter housing(is in the picture).I reported it to the dealer(honda Hamilton NJ) but they dismissed me saying it was not their problem because they did not replace the part. I reported it to honda usa where after three weeks they told me the same thing. On their website it clearly states "HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER SET ON THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY...". My question is why they don't replace the filter housing when it says it's a fire hazard. Thank You

WITH POWER TO DOORS OFF (FUSE #13 REMOVED) THE DOOR REAR LATCH WILL NOT ENGAGE AT ALL. THE DOOR WITH A FAILED REAR LATCH WILL ALLOW THE DOOR TO SLIDE OPEN COMPLETELY ON ACCELERATION, SLAM FORWARD BUT NOT LATCH ON BRAKING, AND WILL ALSO SLIDE OPEN AROUND A CORNER. THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE I HAD 2 CHILDREN IN THE CENTER SEAT, AT THE SLIDING DOOR OPENINGS. DEALER WANTS $511 PLUS TAX, AND THERE IS A REBUILD SERVICE FOR THE REAR LATCH ON EBAY FOR AROUND $90, PROVING IT IS A CHRONIC, WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM. FROM THE LAST 5-6 MONTHS (NOT EXACTLY WHEN I REALIZED BUT PROBABLY AROUND MAY 2020 I'M FEELING THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT GETS HEATED AUTOMATICALLY WHILE DRIVING CONTINUOUSLY MORE THAN 10 MILES (AS ITS EQUIPPED WITH THE HEATED SEAT FEATURE) EVEN THOUGH THE SWITCH IS OFF. THIS IS REALLY STRANGE AS WITHOUT TRUING THE HEATED SEAT INTO HI/LOW POSITION IT SHOULDN'T HEAT THE SEAT. IT FEELS VERY UNSAFE IF WE GO ON A LONG DRIVE. NOTE: I DIDN'T CHECKED THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT IF THAT BEHAVES IN THE SAME WAY.
