NHTSA investigations into the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2009-2011 Hyundai Genesis vehicles manufactured April 30, 2008, to November 21, 2010, and 2011 Hyundai Equus vehicles manufactured July 31, 2010, to November 21, 2010. Due to a circuit failure, the stop lamps in the affected vehicles may not illuminate.

Risk: A following vehicle may not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or coming to a stop if the stop lamps on the vehicle do not illuminate as expected. There is an increased risk of a rear-end crash as a result.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake tra

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2023125 404,543 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: Hyundai is conducting a special service campaign that provides anti-corrosion treatment to certain underbody components. Over time, components under the vehicle, including brake lines could corrode. If this happens, a brake line could fail and leak. A brake fluid leak can result in reduced braking. Safety Risk: Reduced braking can cause an extended stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the underbody, including the brake lines. The dealer will apply an anti-corrosion treatment to certain parts, and replace the brake lines if necessary.

Recall 2014558 2,478 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, a diode in the stop lamp circuit could fail, which could result in the brake lights failing to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will repair the stop lamp switch circuit.

Recall 2013376 3,149 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, corrosion could occur in the brake system Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit. Over time, this could affect the control unit's operation, causing a low/soft brake pedal and reduced braking effectiveness. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.

POWER TRAIN

Noticed after driving my Hyundai genesis and once running for roughly 15-20 mins once the engine has warmed up I noticed a bounce feeling coming from the front end(I thought)and then noticed my speed dropped and when pressure was apply to the gas pedal it wouldn’t go, as the car slowed down by itself until it came to a complete stop I cutt the car off and began walking around to where I smelled something burning and then seen smoke coming from my front driver wheel to discover my brake had locked up for no reason. I left the car to cool down and returned to get it and luckily it was unlocked and was successful to drive it home(4min drive), a couple days later I had to take my son to school to where it did the exact same thing again, days later I had all braking replaced which failed to solve the issue. This has been happening for over 4 months now and has always been my daily driver and has always been upkept and never had any issues with my car until now. I’m a single parent with two children whom I have to take to school daily and pickup and this issue has already cost me a lot however I was made aware of this issue by a professional mechanic whom said my car has a current recall for this exact issue I’m having but my vin doesn’t show it even thought everything lines up!

SERVICE BRAKES

The HECU has been malfunctioning in my car for over a year now. It is an open recall for my make, model and year of car. I took it to Bob Rohrman Indy Hyundai and they diagnosed the failed part. This part affects my ABS. There are currently two warning lights on one for the ECS which is the traction control stabilizer and the ABS light is on. Meaning the use of the breaking system is limited and not working properly. I have asked the corporate Hyundai to uphold the recall warranty but I was advised they would not cover this because my vehicle has a rebuilt title. I drive my vehicle on a daily basis and I’m terrified of my brakes going out. The corrosion from the fluid is what causes the HECU to malfunction and it is so scary to think about. This problem was diagnosed and first reported to my his dealership on 6/23/2022.

The window regulators are built with a hard plastic that essentially melts in Florida heat and then your windows just drop. Each window in my car has dropped and will not go back up without paying Hyundai a lot of money to repair the window. For instance, in December 2022 I paid Hyundai $660 to repair the right rear window and in August 2022 I paid Hyundai $651 to repair the left rear window regulator (second repair). Now the front driver side window has to be repaired for the second or third time. The parts were ordered and just the parts will cost $900 and I still will have to pay the labor expenses for inferior made materials. The driver side window was replaced and a new regulator was installed by Napleton Hyundai in West Palm Beach. I do not have the paperwork for the repairs made by Napleton. Then Coastal Hyundai in Melbourne, Florida worked on the rest of the windows including putting in a new regulator in the driver side and will install a new motor. These windows are neither reliable nor safe and should not have been constructed with plastic. They just fall and will not go back up. The window parts should have been recalled and replaced. I attached a copy of the invoices that I have paid already and could locate. Also, I want to report that when I contacted Hyundai to issue a complaint about the right rear window in December 2022 it took 30 days for the customer service representative to respond to me. He apparently, would document that he planned to call me in the computer and never followed through. I called and asked to talk to his Supervisor and was told that I would have to talk with him. Not having a Supervisor to talk with was also a problem because he knew that I could only talk to him so he took his time. I don't know if anything will be done but I wanted to document my concerns.

NHTSA complaint #11330082 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
