Owners have filed 141 complaints
about the 2016 Nissan Murano with NHTSA between 2016 and 2026.
The largest single group is the other & unspecified.
Across this model's run it ranks 14 of 20 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 19
Against the median year of the Nissan Murano. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 26
5% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 99
58% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

Recalls on the 2016 Nissan Murano
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
Risk: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016 Murano vehicles manufactured December 17, 2015, to February 11, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured November 25, 2015, to February 12, 2016 and equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). The ABS actuator may have a damaged O-ring that may result in a lack of brake fluid pressure.
Risk: Insufficient brake fluid pressure may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 201956742,447 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain vehicles, the antilock brake system (ABS) actuator pump may leak brake fluid and malfunction. This would cause the ABS warning lamp to turn on. If this problem is not fixed, damage to the ABS actuator could result in a short circuit. Note: This is a replacement and expansion of Transport Canada recall 2018-486. All vehicles that did not have the ABS actuator pump replaced under that recall require this repair. Safety Risk: A short circuit could increase the risk of a fire, even while parked. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail with an interim notice. A final repair is not yet available. If the ABS warning light stays on for 10 seconds or longer, you should park your vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures. You should also call Nissan or Infiniti Roadside assistance to have your vehicle towed to a dealer for repair. A second notice will be sent to you once the final repair parts are available. This letter will advise you to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the ABS actuator.
Recall 201848619,761 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles, the antilock brake system (ABS) actuator pump may leak brake fluid onto an electronic circuit board, causing it to malfunction. This would cause the illumination of the ABS warning lamp on the instrument panel. If the vehicle continues to be operated, damage to the ABS module could lead to a fire, creating a risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the ABS actuator as necessary. Note: This replaces recall 2016-424. Vehicles repaired under that campaign require a second repair under this campaign.
Recall 201642410,819 units in Canada
Brakes
Certain vehicles equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control may have ABS actuators that may have been manufactured out of specification. This could cause the ABS actuator pump seal to leak brake fluid. This would cause the ABS warning light to illuminate, and if ignored, and the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, the brake fluid leak could create an electrical short in the actuator circuit. This could lead to a fire, which could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the ABS actuator, and will replace as necessary.
Recall 2016179257,130 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
On certain vehicles, a defect in the occupant classification system could allow an adult sitting in the front passenger seat to be classified as a child or an “empty seat”. This would suppress the airbag, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Correction: For affected Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue and Sentra vehicles, dealers will reprogram the airbag control unit and the occupant classification system control unit. For affected Leaf, NV200, Pathfinder, Q50 and JX35/QX60 vehicles, dealers will replace the occupant classification system electronic control unit.
Recall 2016148722 units in Canada
Brakes
Certain vehicles may have been manufactured with a defective Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) actuator. This could cause pressure control to be delayed when the Anti-Lock Brakes are activated, resulting in loss of vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash causing in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the ABS actuator and, if affected, replace the defective ABS actuator.

NISSAN MURANO 2016 AND ON OUR PREVIOUSLY OWNED 2014 PATHFINDER, WHEN STATIONARY, THE POWERED BACK LIFTGATE CAN REVERT DIRECTION WHEN IT'S AUTOMATICALLY OPENING TO AUTOMATICALLY CLOSING WHEN THERE'S ACCUMULATED SNOW OR HEAVY SNOWFALL, WHEN THERE'S WEIGHT. THE FORCE FOR IT'S POWERED CLOSING IS ENOUGH TO PINCH SOMEONE BETWEEN CAR OR TO HIT THEIR HEAD. NISSAN HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THIS IS BY DESIGN AND "NO REPAIR OPTION" BOTH AT DEALER AND WITH MY CALL WITH ANDREA FROM NISSAN NORTH AMERICA'S CUSTOMER CARE DEPARTMENT. HOWEVER, IT IS A DANGER. IN OUR CASE, THE FORCE OF IT COMING DOWN AND MY WIFE STANDING UP AFTER PUTTING IN GROCERY, NOT REALIZING THE GATE IS COMING DOWN ON HER, RESULTED IN HER HITTING HER HEAD ON THE LIFT GATE COMING DOWN AND CAUSED INJURY TO HER HEAD AND HER HEAD TO SWELL. THERE ARE ALSO OTHER COMPLAINTS OF SIMILAR SITUATION ONLINE PER BELOW. IT IS A ACTUAL DANGER AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY NISSAN. IT SHOULD NOT COME DOWN BUT INSTEAD SHOULD JUST STOP. I am reporting a serious intermittent safety issue with my 2016 Nissan Murano, which I recently purchased from a private seller. On multiple occasions, the vehicle suddenly stops accelerating after driving for approximately 20–30 minutes, including multiple local stops. When this occurs, the engine continues to run, but the car becomes completely unresponsive to throttle input and cannot be moved, even when placed into gear. This has happened in live traffic situations, posing a clear risk to safety. In each instance, after the car sits for a period of time or is connected to an external battery charger, it eventually restarts and operates normally—until the issue repeats. There are no warning lights or messages on the dashboard, and no diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the system. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Nissan dealership, where it remained for over a month. They reported being unable to reproduce the issue and could not identify any mechanical or electrical faults. The alternator tested fine, and they returned the vehicle to me with no repairs or resolution. Since that time, the issue has occurred again. I believe this may involve: A low-voltage electrical problem, possibly a blown fusible link or intermittent charging system failure A bad ground or wiring fault affecting the ECM, TCM, or fuel pump A voltage-sensitive sensor or relay malfunction that fails under heat or load but does not log a fault A condition causing the CVT transmission to disengage due to insufficient power This issue has rendered the vehicle dangerous and unreliable, especially since it fails with no warning and then unpredictably recovers. I am filing this complaint in hopes that NHTSA will investigate this failure pattern, which appears to be consistent with known Nissan electrical and CVT system complaints in other model years. If this is a known defect, Nissan should be held accountable for providing a resolution, even outside of warranty.

I have been experiencing complete driving failure with my 2016 Nissan Murano. It shutdowns randomly without any warning well driving in traffic. I have already experienced being put in a crash risk three times. I have been trying to work with the dealer for almost 2 months now, only to receive my SUV with the same issue. I am terrified to be forced to put my children in such a high risk automobile as this is supposed to be our reliable transportation. I am highly disappointed and uncomfortable with the dealership stating repeatedly they don’t know what’s wrong with my vehicle as they are no codes to factually state the real issue. In the process I am being told I need to pay for highly priced repair guesses or problems that have been generated in their care trying to figure things out. The vehicle has even stopped on them while driving. After driving off their lot twice only to be stranded and put in a crash risk I am not comfortable with being rushed to pick up this vehicle without total safety concerns being addressed. Nissan has not addressed my concerns about their vehicles having recalls about this same issues, only stating it doesn’t show up for my vin# Well why am I having the same exact problem? The safety risks of the vehicle failing in the mist of traffic with absolutely no warning is a huge life threatening risk and shouldn’t be of the hardship of my family as I immediately had it towed to the dealership to assure safety for all. I purchased what I thought would be a safer longevity vehicle to transport my children. I am really having a difficult time with understanding of my concerns are of top priority. As I do appreciate being given a rental while they try a figure it out. My major concerns are being given the vehicle back at the same exact safety issues or worse. My car smells like something is burning, when I drive it for a distance. I had my oil changed back in December and I took it back to the Dealership and advised of the smell and I was advised that my transmission was leaking. When I purchased my car used in August of 2023, I took it back to the Dealership advising that it seemed like it wasn't shifting properly and was advised that 2 mechanics and the Salesman all drove the car, and nothing was wrong and I just needed to get used to the way a Nissan vehicle transmission shifts and here I am today being advised that I have to pay $1200.00 for the repairs for the inner and outer seals because they are leaking. This actually to me is a safety concern because I smell something burning and I have a small child. I also remember seeing a sticker advising do not sale on the car and because of seeing a report on the news about those stickers being placed on cars I am concerned about that also and that I was sold a car that was possibly not supposed to have been purchased. I have contacted the Consume Affairs from Nissan and got nowhere because once again no one wants to take responsibility and fix the car and at this point I really would just like to get another car and to be compensated for the last 2 years. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Murano. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH on the highway, the vehicle started to shake and vibrate while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the body of the vehicle thumped ten times in a row and constantly seized. The check engine warning light was illuminated. A local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The contact inspected under the hood and became aware that there was coolant all over the engine bay. The manufacturer was notified of the failure via email, and informed the contact that they could not assist with the cost for the repair of the engine. The approximate failure mileage was 44,830.

july 2024 traction warning kept appearing on a daily basis. I have pushed Traction off button which both remain on then when car is off (for about 15min or so) then both disappear. However soon afterwards if I keep driving it will appear again - My fear, twice the Traction warning appeared and without putting on Traction off my Vehicle stalled - it was in a frozen state - couldn't move steering wheel -then slowly began moving at 5mph until Traction off was pushed and slowly began running again - but my car does not drive past 65mph on freeway? These are normal streets I'm driving, no pot holes etc. Finally able to get appt with my local mechanic Klipper Automotive for August 30th.

The Nissan Murano’s were recalled back in 2020 stating their CVT was causing stalling issues mid driving and overheating in extreme weather (heat). I complained to Nissan prior to this recall and was told it was filter issue then a battery issue. Of course if was neither. The recall was completed, however for the past year and half my Nissan Murano Hybrid stalls when the air condition is on during the summer. The car drives fine in the winter and late fall. I have taken my vehicle to 2 Nissan dealerships Owings Mills and Ellicott City wanted to ensure of the issue. Both came back with the same answer, for the Consumer rep Ali suggested getting a second opinion and I informed him I did. The Hybrid CVT is overheating mechanical failure due to a part inside the transmission. Nissan refuses to fix stating I need to pay $11,000 for a new transmission to fix the issue. The service rep John stated no other Murano has ever had this happen and of course they no longer make my year (2016). I have contacted Nissan Consumer line twice and was informed they will not be doing a good will either. The cost is so high was told because they have to build a new one. I believe NIssan knew of this problem and ignored and was hoping the recall would fix the shudder and shut off of the vehicle. Another recall needs to be done on CVT’s for the brand Nissan and should be responsible for fixing this.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
The FEB system is braking when not necessary, causing potential serious damage/injury. The sensor is also affecting my ICC/cruise control. An orange light comes on while using cruise control and the cruise control stops/fails and will not reengage until I stop the vehicle and turn it off, then on again.
