NHTSA investigations into the 2009 Nissan Murano

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Extended Braking Distances

On April 18, 2018, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA) 18-001 to investigate reports of braking concerns in model year (MY) 2009 Nissan Murano vehicles. A failure of the hydraulic control unit (HCU) portion of the antilock brake system (ABS), which involves improper operation of an internal hydraulic control valve(s), can cause extended brake pedal travel and may result in a reduction in overall braking effectiveness. Tier-one supplier Continental manufactured the HCU for Nissan. The corrosion-preventive, zinc coating used on the armatures of the normally...

Recalls on the 2009 Nissan Murano

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Nissan of North America, Inc (Nissan) is recalling certain 2009 Murano vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

Risk: If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. THE MATERIAL IN THE NUT USED TO SECURE THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER OF THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) MAY CORRODE AND POTENTIALLY CRACK IN AREAS WITH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE NUT MAY COME OUT OF THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER AND THE TPMS LAMP WILL ILLUMINATE.

Risk: IF THE TPMS LAMP IS DISREGARDED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION, THE TIRE WILL QUICKLY LOSE AIR PRESSURE AT A CONSISTENT RATE RESULTING IN A FLAT TIRE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

08V521000

AIR BAGS

NISSAN IS RECALLING 204,361 MY 2007-2008 ALTIMA, ALTIMA HYBRID, 350Z, 350Z ROADSTER, MY 2008 ALTIMA COUPE, ROGUE, MY 2009 MURANO, AND INFINITI MY 2007-2008 G35 SEDAN, MY 2008 G37 COUPE AND EX35 PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CONTINENTAL AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS' OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) CONTROL UNITS. A VARISTOR IN THE OCS CONTROL UNIT LOCATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED OUT OF SPECIFICATION. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THIS COULD CAUSE AN INTERRUPTION OF SIGNAL BETWEEN THE OCS AND THE AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU).

Risk: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE PASSENGER AIR BAG BEING SUPPRESSED WHICH COULD FAIL TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

08V066000

AIR BAGS

NISSAN IS RECALLING 16,365 MY 2008 INFINITI EX35 AND MY 2009 NISSAN MURANO VEHICLES. DUE TO INCORRECT SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING, THE AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU) MAY CAUSE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG NOT TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED IF THE VEHICLE BATTERY BECOMES SIGNIFICANTLY DISCHARGED.

Risk: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE PASSENGER AIR BAG NOT INFLATING IN A CRASH IN WHICH IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO SO, AND INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2018733 5,924 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the brake Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) may become contaminated by a reaction between brake fluid and internal anti-corrosion coatings. This could cause an internal control valve to stick open, potentially increasing brake pedal travel and/or stopping distances. This may create an increased risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 brake fluid. The HCU will then be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition. If necessary, HCU will be replaced.

Recall 2010383 19,565 units in Canada

Lights And Instruments

On certain vehicles, the filament in the bulb of the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) may burn out due to a shorter lifespan than expected. A loss of DRL illumination could render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and to pedestrians during daylight hours, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the Daytime Running Lamp bulbs with a longer life type bulb.

Recall 2009283 18,358 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, material in the nut used to secure the sensor-transmitter of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may corrode and crack in areas with heavy concentrations of road salt. If this occurs, the nut may come out of the TPMS sensor-transmitter causing a rapid loss of tire air pressure. This could adversely affect vehicle control and cause a crash resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the TPMS nut with a revised version.

Recall 2008363 12,880 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, a varistor in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) control unit located in the passenger seat cushion may have been manufactured incorrectly. Under certain conditions, this could cause an interruption of signal between the OCS and the Airbag control unit (ACU). This could result in the passenger airbag being suppressed. The (red) supplemental airbag warning light would flash & the (amber) front passenger airbag status light would illuminate to alert the vehicle operator, however in case of a crash a suppressed airbag could result in personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will test the signal between the OCS & ACU and if necessary will replace the seat cushion containing OCS hardware.

Recall 2008050 1,838 units in Canada

Airbag

If the vehicle battery becomes significantly discharged and the voltage in the electrical system drops (because, for example, the ignition is left in the "ON" position for a significant length of time without the engine running), the Airbag Control unit (ACU) is designed to suppress the passenger airbag and illuminate the passenger airbag status light. When the battery recharges and correct voltage is restored, the ACU is designed to reactivate the passenger airbag system. On certain vehicles, incorrect software programming may not allow the ACU to reactivate the airbag as intended. This can result in the passenger airbag being suppressed without lighting the warning indicator and the airbag status light. Failure of the airbag to inflate during a crash could increase the passenger seat occupant's risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the ACU.

SERVICE BRAKES

When driving at a slow speed and applying full brakes, the car rather than stopping quickly took more time to stop and thus resulted in an accident - collided with the car in front. There was a recall for this car in 2019 for exactly this problem - R1814. Apparently, the fix the dealer has performed didn’t alleviate the problem. I sincerely request you to perform a thorough assessment of the recommended fix for this recall to safeguard others from this serious safety issue. Also, if possible, I request you to arrange for assessment of my vehicle to confirm if my ABS concerns are true which I truly believe they’re.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I was going 35 MPH, normal operation speed and there was no extreme weather or road conditions. I slowed down to get into the center turn lane ended up coming to a complete stop due to on coming traffic. I was stopped for about 30 seconds to maybe a minute when I finally had enough clearance to make my turn. When I pressed the accelerator it began to accelerate but stalled out almost immediately. So I pressed and depressed the accelerator rapidly several times then it finally accelerated. When it did finally accelerate it accelerated much to quickly like it just took off. I’d like to say that this excessive acceleration was terrible but it saved my passenger from getting slammed by the now on coming traffic due to the lack of power. This is not the first time it has happened it does it allot when the weather gets warmer as well as when exiting the highway coming to a complete stop and then when trying to accelerate it stalls I’d say 25% of the time. I’ve taken it to multiple repair shops and they all say they can’t find the problem. I know their is a problem and I’ve read of this happening to many other owners so why is there no recall on it yet I’m surprised no one has been seriously injured or worse. In my opinion I feel like the manufacturer has complete disregard to the consumers safety. It’s unsettling.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

We bought our 2009 Murano new back when we were expecting our baby cause it was rated one of the safest suv on the market. For the most part besides some brake issues and the steering linkage that I had scheduled to have replaced last month its treated us well. Last month with our now [XXX] old daughter I took it to go to a concert an hr from our house. On the highway I felt it swaying which I found weird cause it was swaying from the rear of the vehicle not the front where the linkage is. We drove home slowly and the next day I dropped it off at our mechanics to have the linkage replaced and asked him to check out the sway I felt. He immediately called me after he got it on the lift and said I needed to head to the shop that our suv was JUNK! When I got there I could not believe my eyes and thanked God that I and even more my daughter made it home safely. My mechanic of 35yrs in business said we were lucky we didn't end up in the woods on the highway and that the entire rear k member/ frame is completely rotted out and the rear tires could have flown off at any moment. I have read that there is a recall on this issue but not in the salt belt states. That is ridiculous and is an excuse to not have to back your vehicle. We live in Dartmouth MA and have barely had any snow in the past 10 yrs to salt for and even if we had this hasn't happen to any other vehicles we own. 2003GMC, 2006 Saab and my wifes Jeep all gd. Whats the point of getting a safety check during the annual inspection when you know your frame is junk and its a death trap! How in good faith can you not back your products when this is clearly a major issue. Nissan needs to do the right thing and take care of the people who have taken care of them by buying there vehicles. This vehicle has always been meticulously maintained, washed constantly at car wash with the extra fee of undercarriage spray for what when its rotting from the inside out as you are aware off. When I was at a standstill at a red light with foot on the brake, the car was jerking forward on its own. I was driving the car with my 2 year old when this happened and decided to take it to a mechanic who confirmed that it is a transmission problem as well as a broken axle on the left. I left the car at his shop and started shopping around for a transmission replacement which is very costly. My concern is, if this has been a faulty issue with 2009 Nissan Murano transmissions, then it is likely that this can happen again if I purchase a used transmission which at this time, I cannot afford so it is sitting at the mechanics repair shop until I either save money for a transmission or use the money to get a better used vehicle. At this time I have to take my mom to work and use her car so i can go to work. I’ve been doing this for the past 2 weeks and unsure as to how much longer I can keep doing this as our work hours are conflicting.
