Recalls on the 2017 RAM 3500

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2025013 1,393 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain trucks, the side curtain airbag inflators may be defective. As a result, the driver and/or passenger side curtain airbag inflator(s) could rupture unexpectedly and metal fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants. Note: This recall also affects certain 2016 model year RAM 3500 chassis cab incomplete vehicles. Safety Risk: An airbag inflator that ruptures can create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your truck to a dealership to replace the affected side curtain airbag(s).

Recall 2024727 22,119 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain trucks, the brake hydraulic control unit could fail. Over time, this could cause the antilock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) system and/or traction control not to work. Note: This recall also affects certain RAM 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab incomplete vehicles. Safety Risk: An antilock braking system, electronic stability control system and/or traction control system that doesn't work could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your truck to a dealership to replace the brake hydraulic control unit.

Recall 2024548 314,717 units in Canada

Label

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.

Recall 2021336 30,899 units in Canada

Wheels

Issue: On certain pickup and chassis-cab trucks, the owner's manual and service manual list the wrong torque specification for the wheel nuts. As a result, some trucks may have had the lug nuts over-tightened during servicing. This can damage the wheel studs and, over time, they could break. If this happens, a wheel could separate from the truck. Note: This recall only affects trucks equipped with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts. Safety Risk: A wheel separation could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that separates could also hit another person or vehicle. Corrective Action: FCA Canada will contact owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect and replace the wheel studs, as necessary. They will also provide an update for the torque specification listed in the owner's manual.

Recall 2020312

Steering

Issue: This recall is for certain replacement parts for use on Ram Heavy Duty trucks that were sold by dealer parts departments. This recall is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. If the outboard steering linkage jam nut is not welded according to the Dealer Service Instructions for safety recall V06, it could loosen and allow one end of the drag link to separate from the adjuster sleeve. A drag link separation can result in a loss of steering control. The following 4x4 style steering system parts are included in this recall: Drag Link Assembly (Part # 68369907AA) Jam Nut (Part # 06510749AA and Part # 06510750AA) Drag Link Outer (Part # 68111301AA) Drag Link Adjuster (Part #68111302AA) Drag Link Inner (Part # 68111304AA) Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify potential owners using dealer sales records. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the drag link assembly. If the drag link is not welded but the jam nuts are properly tightened, the nuts will be welded to the adjuster sleeve. If the nuts are not properly tightened, the drag link assembly will be assessed for replacement. If a component or assembly is returned, FCA will reimburse the customer.

Recall 2019441 220,317 units in Canada

Structure

Issue: On certain trucks equipped with a power locking tailgate, the tailgate may open while driving. If this occurs, cargo that is not secured could fall out of the truck bed and onto the road. Note: This is an expansion of recall U74 (Transport Canada recall 2018-398). Safety Risk: Cargo that falls from the truck bed could create a road hazard for others. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a dealer to modify the tailgate locking mechanism. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2019-221

Recall 2019420 5,327 units in Canada

Other

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

SERVICE BRAKES

On December 14th, I was driving my 2017 Ram 3500 with 95,000 miles down the road when I encountered a tree completely blocking the roadway. When I applied the brakes I heard a pop and the brake pedal went the the floor. At this point I had no brakes and was forced to hit the tree. Thankfully it was in a rural area and no one was killed because of the failure. My safety was defiantly put at risk because of this failure. Once stopped I was able to look under the hood and found the top bolt that holds the brake master cylinder to the firewall sheared completely off. This caused the brake master cylinder to fall away from the firewall and disabled all braking functions. I had the vehicle towed to a Ram Dealer and then contacted Ram (Stellantis) for a reason and solution to fix the failure. They sent an engineering analysis associate to look at the the truck finally on the January 9th. They then sent a very generic letter on the 12th stating that they don't believe it is a manufacturing issue. They will give the dealer or myself no further information on what they found, what the cause was, or how the dealer should proceed to fix the problem. The vehicle is still currently sitting at the Ram Dealer and has not been fixed if you would like to inspect it. There were no warning lights, messages, or prior problems associated with this failure. It was a sudden and catastrophic failure of the braking system.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

The vehicle had a sudden acceleration problem and the driver ended up in a big crash. The driver is in the hospital with many injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer before, at the beginning of March, because the check engine light was on and the throttle control light on and the truck didn't shift properly and dealer said that he doesn't have a transmission mechanic for about a month. They worked on the recalls and the oil and fuel filters change. Afterwards I took the truck to another shop. They changed the oil at the transmission, but the truck showed the same messages on the cluster almost immediately. I took the truck to another mechanic and they changed the solenoids in the transmission, but in a short time the same messages (Check engine light and throttle control light) came on the cluster. When these light came on the truck didn't shift properly so I spoke with another mechanic about the problem and he programmed me for an appointment on August 4th. This date is too late now, because on July 25th I lost the truck in a terrible accident due to sudden acceleration of the truck and the driver could not stop it. The brakes failed and he tried to slow it down driving it against the concrete curve but he couldn't, the truck kept on speeding then he hit a big tree in order not to crash other cars on the road or the people in the driveway close to the place of the accident.

I own a 2017 Ram Laramie Longhorn dual-rear-wheel truck with an open recall (NHTSA Campaign 24V896000, Chrysler code C4B) that was issued in November 2024. The dealership has no parts available and RAM Customer Care recommends a "service part" which is also not available. Confirmation from the dealership involves leaving my truck at the service center for several days with no loaner car, which I can not afford to do for work. I am having intermittent warning lights for my Anti-lock Braking System and Traction Control which are directly associated with the above-mentioned recall. I often tow with this vehicle and this issue is now an active safety system problem associated with the recall that makes this vehicle dangerous to drive if the hydraulic unit fails while towing or when driving, the safety systems of Traction Control, Anti-lock Braking System, and Electronic Stability Control will not function. Subject: Safety Recall Remedy Unavailable Due to Lack of Parts I am submitting this complaint regarding my Ram truck, VIN [XXX], which is subject to a Stellantis safety recall involving the C4B Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Although Stellantis has acknowledged this as a safety-related defect and issued a recall, I have been unable to obtain the required repair because replacement parts are not available. After multiple attempts of inquiring for a repair, my dealership has informed me that there is no estimated date when the hydraulic control unit will be available. This situation leaves me with a vehicle that is subject to an unresolved safety recall, yet neither the manufacturer nor the dealer can provide the required remedy within a reasonable timeframe. The recall involves a critical braking system component that affects the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Traction Control System. These are essential safety systems designed to help maintain vehicle control during emergency braking and adverse driving conditions. I tow a 16K lb fifth wheel and the risk is unacceptable for the past 18 months-not to mention the constant dinging of the warning, light, inability to use cruise control, and the inability to trade in or sell the vehicle. I am concerned that Stellantis has initiated this recall without ensuring that an adequate supply of replacement parts is available to promptly repair affected vehicles. Owners are left waiting indefinitely while continuing to own and, in many cases, operate vehicles with an acknowledged safety defect. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether Stellantis is meeting its obligations under federal recall requirements by providing an effective and timely remedy. I also request that NHTSA require Stellantis to improve parts availability and communication with affected owners so that recalled vehicles can be repaired within a reasonable period. Thanks. The HCU ABS is malfunctioning causing the cruise control to not work along with anti lock brake functions. This could cause a brake malfunction leading to a crash. We have received the recall notice, C4B/NHTSA 24V-896 over a year ago. We have contacted the local dealer several times during that year, including May 21, 2026. No effort has been made by the dealer to change the defective part and we have been told no parts are available and no delivery date can be given to change the part. Meanwhile we are forced to drive a vehicle with the potential to cause a crash. Please take action to help us.

The issue involves the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and hydraulic control unit on our 2017 Ram 3500. The recall states that the ABS module/hydraulic control unit may fail, which can impact braking performance and disable safety systems. The component has not been repaired because parts have been unavailable for over three years. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This defect creates a serious safety risk. The vehicle is primarily used to tow livestock, including horses, and loss or reduction of braking capability while towing could result in loss of control, increased stopping distance, or an accident involving occupants, other drivers, or transported animals. The problem has been confirmed by authorized Ram dealerships in Chehalis, Washington and Eureka, California. Both dealerships, as well as Ram customer care, have acknowledged the open recall and stated that no parts are available to complete the repair. The vehicle has not been physically inspected by the manufacturer for repair because no remedy has been available. It has not been involved in an accident related to this issue. Prior to the recall, there were no known warning messages or confirmed failures observed. However, the recall itself indicates a potential failure of the ABS system and braking components, which may occur without warning. The recall has remained unresolved for an unreasonable amount of time. The manufacturer has failed to provide a remedy for this safety-related defect within a reasonable time.

My ABS hydraulic control unit pump motor is not working properly. This has been affecting me since Oct 2024 when we were pulling our 5th wheel and losing braking and power. I learned later that It is part of a NHTSA Recall 24V-896000. Code C4B I was told by the Dodge dealer Jack Powell in [XXX] that I was on waitlist when I reported it to them 12/19/2024. During the next several months I always got the same answer so then filed a case on 7/7/2025 with the FCA. Case #XXX. During many calls after, and including the last call on 3/27/26 that the part was not available, that this was a National backorder with no ETA. I filed another case on 8/17/25 for a rental vehicle - case #XXX. After several calls I got that approved. The Dodge dealer diagnosed my truck with that active code in place. Also to be clear, the dealer has confirmed failure of the ABS system, which disables safety features Due to this defect, the truck can lose ABS braking, tractional control and electronic stability control. The dash warning lights come on all the time, with the sound too. Although I was approved for a rental vehicle, that is for $60 per day and only for a non-tow vehicle. The problem is that this vehicle is primarily used for towing. I have a 5th wheel hitch and use it for towing our 5th wheel trailer, that we purchase early 2024. We tow our boat as well. The bigger problem is that I am near retirement and we are not able to use our 5th wheel for the trips to prepare for that and the plan to travel once I retire later this year. I need to have a functionally comparable vehicle that is equipped for 5th wheel towing as a rental or reimbursement. I would also like a review for alternative remedies due to the unreasonable delay in completing the safety recall. When I contacted Stellantis on 3/27/26 I was told her was no buyback option and they would escalate to the rental dept for my concerns The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

While driving on interstate 20 and then on I65 my cruise control dropped off causing the vehicle to sudden decrease in speed. Rear end collision narrow avoided due to commercial vehicles, following, quick action saved a disaster. This loss of cruise control, is/was caused by the warning ⚠️ of recall C4B/NHTSA 24V-896. We are now experiencing a total loss of safety (service electronic brake system, service abs system, loss of traction control, {loss of cruise control}). These safety functions are now making this, one ton, dually, a death trap, mental health problem (I have PTSD, depression, anger management, anxiety problems) . My wife is afraid of this vehicle, WILL NOT let me pull our 42 foot, 15,000 pound, Redwood 38GK 5th wheel RV. Should your investigation be done, this is the 3rd recall/repair on this system. Will this dangerous vehicle be the next cause or a deadly pile up, will children be the the innocent victims? This recall and the other ever be fixed? The value has dropped , now by $25k to $35,000 on truck with 45,000 miles. Appreciate your time, [XXX] .
