NHTSA investigations into the 2020 Volvo XC60

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

25V179000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2020-2021 S90, 2020-2022 S60, V60, XC60, XC90, and 2022 V90 plug-in hybrid vehicles. The high-voltage battery may experience a short circuit within the battery module when the battery is fully charged and the vehicle is parked.

Risk: A short circuit in a high-voltage battery increases the risk of a fire.

23V001000

STEERING

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2019-2022 V60CC, XC60, and XC90 vehicles. During steering gear assembly, double screws may have been assembled on top of each other, which can cause a screw to fall into the gearbox housing.

Risk: A screw inside the gearbox housing can cause the steering wheel to lock up and increase the risk of a crash.

21V716000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2021 S90L, 2020-2021 XC60, and XC90 vehicles. An improperly welded rotor and shaft may separate within the integrated brake system.

Risk: Separation of the rotor and shaft may cause a reduction in braking assistance and a loss of the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), increasing the risk of a crash.

21V414000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2019-2020 V90, XC60, S60, V60, V60CC, S90, V90CC, S90L, and XC90 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump can blow a fuse and fail.

Risk: Failure of the low-pressure fuel pump can cause a stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

20V503000

VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES

Volvo Car of N.A., LLC (Volvo Cars) is recalling certain 2018-2020 XC60 vehicles. The nuts that secure the front wipers may not have been sufficiently tightened, possibly causing the wipers to not function properly.

Risk: The risk of the front wiper arms nut fixation to loosen and not holding the arm in correct position, the wiper function could be reduced and vision could be impaired, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

20V144000

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Volvo Cars USA LLC (Volvo Cars) is recalling certain 2019-2020 S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, S90L, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, and XC90 vehicles. Due to a software/hardware incompatibility, the Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) system may not detect obstacles and engage as intended.

Risk: If the automatic emergency braking system does not engage as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2025147 585 units in Canada

High Voltage

Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem inside the high-voltage battery. As a result, the battery modules could overheat and short circuit. Note: This recall only affects certain plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. Safety Risk: A short circuit in the high-voltage battery can create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, Volvo advises not to charge your vehicle until the recall repairs have been completed. Volvo will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the high-voltage battery module(s). The dealer will also install an advanced diagnostic software that will monitor the high-voltage battery and warn you if it detects a problem. If you see this warning, you should contact a dealership to arrange replacement of the affected high-voltage battery module(s).

Recall 2024628 82 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rods connecting the brake pedal to the hydraulic brake unit may not have been assembled properly. As a result, the rods could loosen, and you may experience a change in brake pedal feel. This can cause reduced braking. Safety Risk: Reduced braking can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, tighten the brake pedal pushrod screw.

Recall 2022595 31,117 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the top-view camera to display instead of the rearview camera image when you are reversing. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when reversing. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a 360-degree park assist camera. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners in writing and send a wireless over-the-air update to each vehicle. If the update cannot be completed successfully, or for vehicles without over-the-air (OTA) update capability, Volvo will instruct you to schedule an appointment to have the update performed by a dealer.

Recall 2021345 8,506 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: On certain vehicles, the fuse for the low-pressure fuel pump may be too small. As a result, the fuse could blow and the engine could stall while driving. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Action: Volvo will contact owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the 15 A fuse for the low-pressure fuel pump with a 20 A fuse.

Recall 2020390 9,867 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the nuts that attach the windshield wiper arms may not have been tightened properly. This could cause the wipers to slip and not clear the windshield properly. Safety Risk: Windshield wipers that do not work properly could affect a driver's visibility. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to tighten the nuts on the windshield wiper arms.

Recall 2020099 11,834 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles, the automatic emergency braking system (AEB) may not apply the brakes automatically when it detects a possible collision. In addition, the system may not warn of a potential crash with a non-moving vehicle or object. Note: The regular brake system and all other functions in the vehicle are not affected by this problem. Safety Risk: The AEB system may not provide driver warnings and apply the brakes automatically to help avoid a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the vehicle software.

I have had an issue several times with the hatch of my Volvo xc60. It has a feature where if you wave your foot under the rear door, the hatch will open or close automatically. This has been triggered inadvertantley several times, nearly injuring several people. This is especially dangerous for small children. You can be trapped by the closing door. In one incident, while parked in our garage, the hatch inadvertently opened and pinned me against the wall while holding a small child. The force could injure a child without question. I tried to disable this feature and couldn’t find a way to do it. If you google it, this is a common issue that others have had happen too.

While in service at Volvo Cars Clear Lake for Recall R103312/ Campaign 25V-179, three of four hybrid battery modules failed on installation, yet Volvo refuses to replace the entire battery. This is a covered warranty repair that has not been completed, and the car has been out of service for more than 100 days. During part of that time, it was being stored outdoors with the battery removed and the floor open to the ground.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Recall identified over a year ago during Q1 2025. Manufacturer and dealer have failed to provide appropriate updates for the repair, and no ETA has been given for repair. The only direction received from manufacturer and dealer was to not plug in the vehicle until the recall is completed. So as it stands, I paid for a plug in hybrid vehicle I haven’t been able to plug it in for over a year as it has a flawed hybrid system that apparently can’t be repaired.

The seal on my 2020 Volvo XC60 moonroof allowed water to leak under the floorboards. My car is only 6 years old. We had a lot of rain over a short period and I noticed the sound of water sloshing around under the floor. Nothing was wet inside the car. My Check Engine light came on as well. I took it to the Volvo service dept. They are now saying wires are corroded and that it will cost me over $11,000 to fix this problem. Again - my car is only 6 years old, and less than 70K miles. With my previous Volvo, that I had for 18 years, I never had this problem.

WHEELS

Good Morning: I've attached a letter that I've written to Volvo USA regarding their security lug bolts on the wheels of their vehicles and the adapter that they provide to remove this. I found out after incurring a flat tire that these adapters are often non-functional and that the dealer is well aware of this. I think this is an issue that Volvo should address for all current and past owners. Also, during this incident I experienced what I think is a flaw in their tire pressure monitoring system - it illuminated a yellow caution which, I've seen happen when one tire was not at the same pressure as the others. In this instance the tire was flat. Shouldn't that warrant a different indication? Thank you for your attention to this.

- Back left axle went loose with the back left wheel while driving, causing the car to rotate 45 degrees, scratching the ground. Once the car drifted back horizontally, I used the brakes to stop the car. Multiple pictures show the defect. Back left lights where the axle went off and the wheel is not broken, showing no collision. Liquid escaped from the bottom. Available for inspection and photos as well. -Had I not been able to use the brakes after the car rotated sideways, we would have crashed. This could have caused major injuries to us and/or others. -The police inspected the car and didn't qualify it as an accident since they said no damages, other objects, or vehicles were involved. The manufacturer's local shop made a 4 lines and inaccurate report to qualify it as an accident falsely. If there were an accident, lights would brake before the axle and there was no pothole -There were no warnings. It happened suddenly

SERVICE BRAKES

We recently took our 2020 Volvo XC60 with approximately 20k miles into the dealership where it has received it's oil changes and had its service issues looked at since buying the vehicle new. During the inspection video, the technician indicated the rear brakes had approximately 10% life remaining while the front had approximately 90% life remaining in them. This seems extremely askew and is indicative of a problem. Under normal driving circumstances and 20k miles wear and tear, there is no reason other than a malfunctioning mechanical issue like the emergency brake not disengaging completely that this uneven wear should be occurring. This should not be the case in such a relatively new vehicle and could result in unknown excessive wear on the braking system causing premature brake failure. If we hadn't taken the vehicle in for it's routine oil change, we would not be aware of this safety concern.

Not an issue with dirty camera as it comes in and off. Several times while I’m driving the entire instrument panel blacks out! It’s happened 5x in the last two months and I don’t drive much. I have taken to the dealer and told Volvo by emails and chat features and no one seems concerned. They could not see it happen while they drove it so they are not worried. I don’t feel safe in this car. Safety was the only reason I chose Volvo. Also the radio makes weird sounds, repaired twice lane assist is not working properly and they are not fixing it, braking system wasn’t working but they thankfully did a recall and fixed that. This car does not hold steady while driving despite the lane assist and all the fancy features I expected was working when purchased.

Without incident, the rear driver side tire on our 2020 Volvo XC60 blew out on the sidewall on December 1, 2021. The tire, original to our purchase of the new vehicle, had approximately 10,600 miles on it. There was no other damage to any other part of the tire or wheel. Unfortunately, even though we requested Discount Tire (who replaced the tire) to keep the tire for us, they did not so we don't have it for inspection. Regardless, I have several pictures and a couple of videos of the tire (while on the vehicle). No accident occurred and the other three tires on the vehicle are still undamaged.

1. One day after getting car the rear rotors were defective and had to be replaced. 2. Second problem affected stop/start mechanism. Brought car in four times for this repair. First 3 times service department had no idea what was causing problem. Last time brought in for this problem a stop/start battery was replaced. 3. New most dangerous problem is that while driving car the dashboard display turned into a bright barcode (I took a picture if needed). Stoped car at red light and upon restarting car same problem existed. Went to restaurant and upon leaving 90 minutes later same problem exhausted. This morning when dealer came to pick up car display was working. My wife drives car and this last problem scared her very much and she is frightened to drive car not knowing when and if this, or other problems will again occur. You could not see the speed you were driving at nor how much gas was left. Also, this occurred at night and the light from the barcode display was so bright that it interfered with driving. Have other Volvo owners experienced this problem ? This car is a lemon. And only 16 months old.

VEHICLE: 2020 VOLVO XC60 - DRIVER OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR FAILS TO AUTOMATICALLY EXTEND FROM A VEHICLE LOCKED ROTATED INWARD POSITION WHEN OUTSIDE IN FREEZING WEATHER. THE MIRROR REMAINS ROTATED INWARD FACING THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. A CALL TO VOLVO USA CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR ADVICE GAVE THE RESPONSE - "WAIT TILL IT UNFREEZES". THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A METHOD TO ROTATE IT MANUALLY OTHER THAT FORCE WHICH APPEARS TO CAUSE BREAKAGE. IF YOU CAN'T WAIT, IT LEAVES THE DRIVER WITHOUT A MEANS OF EASILY SEEING APPROACHING TRAFFIC. FULLY ROTATING THE HEAD CREATES OTHER POTENTIAL FOR KEEPING AN EYE ON TRAFFIC AHEAD. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, AND OUTSIDE WITH TEMPERATURE IN ABOUT 31 F DEGREES IN A DRIVEWAY. PASSENGER MIRROR PERFORMED AS INTENDED. THIS HAS APPEND 2 TIMES. TODAY 12/28/2020 IN ZIP CODE 98077 & 12/26/2020 IN ZIP CODE 99338. BOTH IN THE SAME WEATHER CONDITIONS.
