When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2001 BMW X5

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2025602 637 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: This recall applies to vehicles that may be equipped with a replacement sport steering wheel that has a Takata airbag. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, BMW advises you not to drive the vehicle until the recall repairs have been completed. BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to contact a dealership to arrange for an inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the driver-front airbag module. To learn if your vehicle is affected by this recall, owners may: • Visit <a href= https://www.bmw.ca/en/ssl/VehicleRecall.html> https://www.bmw.ca/en/ssl/VehicleRecall.html</a> • Contact your preferred or local BMW Retailer • Call BMW Customer Relations Recall Services at 1-855-217-3002

Issue: 2023 Update - BMW has updated this recall and issued a do not drive advisory for all vehicles that that not yet been repaired. Some vehicles may contain a replacement sport steering wheel with a Takata driver-front air bag module. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. Airbag

Issue: 2023 Update - BMW has updated this recall and issued a do not drive advisory for all vehicles that that not yet been repaired. This recall is for certain vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced as a part of an earlier recall campaign. This recall provides a final repair. Corrective Actions: BMW advises not to drive your vehicle unless this recall repair has been completed. Recall 2012129 67,771 units in Canada

Label

Certain vehicles fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Specifically, the compliance label does not indicate the wheel rim size, as required by the Standard. Correction: Due to the inconsequential nature of this non-compliance, no action will be taken.

Recall 2003001 6,156 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the grommet holding the brake line to the front struts may slip out of its bracket. Consequently, the brake hose attached to the brake line may come in contact with the tire and be subject to wear and abrasion. This could cause some brake fluid leakage which would eventually illuminate the brake warning indicator light. If a loss of front brake performance occurs, the rear brake circuit will still be functional, and will be able to slow and stop the vehicle. Correction: Dealer will install an additional retaining clip in order to further secure the line and grommet to the strut.

Recall 2002138 2,638 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain passenger vehicles the brake pedal arm pivot shaft could loosen from its support bracket. Eventually, the brake pedal arm could detach from the bracket, rendering the braking system ineffective, increasing the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will check the brake pedal arm pivot shaft for proper seating in its support bracket. In addition, a pin will be installed to secure the shaft to the bracket.

Recall 2001182 4,812 units in Canada

Engine

Certain passenger vehicles. The engine auxiliary/cooling fan operation, including variable speed, is electronically controlled. Failure of the fan motor can cause the electrical circuitry of the fan control unit to overload and fail, causing the fan to stop operating. If this were to occur, engine overheating and subsequent engine damage could result. In addition, it is possible for the failure of the electrical circuitry to cause a fire in the fan control unit located in the front of the engine compartment. Correction: Dealers will replace the fan.

Recall 2001039 870 units in Canada

Steering

On certain vehicles, the lower end of the upper steering spindle may not have been inserted completely into the aluminum u-joint assembly (coupling). In such a case, the fastening bolt used to secure the connection may not completely engage the spindle within the coupling. This would make it possible for the spindle to disconnect from the coupling, resulting in loss of steering capability and a possible crash. Correction: Spindle will be inspected for proper insertion into the coupling. If necessary, the spindle will be fully inserted and the fastening bolt replaced.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

2023 September BMW issued me a "Stop Drive" letter in the mail. I parked the vehicle and haven't drove it since. Since then ive called the number in letter and visited website. At one time the individual handling and scheduling my "repair" had asked me if I could drive the car to nearest dealership to get repaired? I said absolutely not; i have recieved a letter stating to stop driving? Im not gonna drive it? When I asked about them coming to fix it and getting a loaner as the letter offered? They said when the vehicle makes it to the dealership for repair it will be up to the dealership doing repairs if im to get a loaner? I asked what am I to do until it gets fixed being that I cant drive? No logical answer given? I've attempted several more times to contact BMW per phone numbers given in mailers stating "stop drive"? Im completely at a loss as of today the vehicle has been sitting so long its now damaged, weathered, and so forth? I just recieved another letter in mail last week same thing about repair do not drive and so forth. I cant believe nothing has been done thus far? I see all the deadlines for repair have past and my address has. Never changed or phone number they are still the same as day they sent first "stop drive" letter was sent and that was actually way before September 2023 I dont know exactly when but September is when I first called about getting repair done and still remain unaddressed today?
