NHTSA investigations into the 2014 BMW X5

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

2 investigations are still open.

EA23001 Opened 17 Mar 2023 Still open FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

High pressure fuel pump failure

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response materials from both FCA and BMW, NHTSA determined that sufficient information to identify a compreh...

EA21002 Opened 17 Sep 2021 Still open AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2014 BMW X5

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Risk: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

16V683000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, X3 xDrive28d, X4 xDrive28i and X4 xDrive35i vehicles, and model year 2014-2015 X5 xDrive35i, X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, and 2014 X5 xDrive35d vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator housing could separate from the base plate and result in metal striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

15V147000

AIR BAGS

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35d Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 19, 2014, to February 16, 2015, and 2014-2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35i, X5 sDrive 35i, X5 xDrive 50i, Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 28, 2013, to February 16, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the Head Protection System (HPS) air bag may not be securely connected to the air bag inflator gas generator.

Risk: Without a secure connection to the inflator, the HPS air bags may have insufficient inflation during a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

14V202000

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 X5 SAV vehicles manufactured December 12, 2013, through March 10, 2014, and equipped with the Soft Close Automatic (SCA) option. The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances and when the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child safety lock can disengage.

Risk: A disengaged child safety lock would allow the rear seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door while the vehicle is parked or in motion, increasing the risk of injury.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2024544 587,250 units in Canada

Label

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.

Recall 2024402 312 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator could rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. If this happens, the airbag may not properly inflate and fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants. Safety Risk: An airbag inflator that ruptures can create a risk of injury or death. Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the driver-front airbag module.

Recall 2023634 7 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator could rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash.

Recall 2021711 12,702 units in Canada

Engine

Issue: On certain vehicles, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could crack internally and leak. If this happens, you may notice the following symptoms: a warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of coolant, reduced engine power, an unpleasant exhaust odour, an unusual noise from the engine and/or smoke from the engine compartment. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada Recall no. 2018-587. Safety Risk: A cracked EGR cooler could create the risk of an engine fire. Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the EGR cooler. The dealer will also inspect the intake manifold, and replace it, if necessary.

Recall 2021469 3,486 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, the high-pressure fuel pump may wear prematurely. This can cause reduced engine performance and could lead to a sudden engine stall. Note: A warning lamp on the instrument cluster will turn on if the fuel pressure drops. Safety Risk: A loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the high-pressure fuel pump.

Recall 2018587 10,368 units in Canada

Engine

This recall was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2021-711. On certain vehicles, the cooler for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module may develop an internal leak and coolant could mix with diesel engine soot/sediment. In rare circumstances, this condition could result in smouldering particles and lead to the melting of the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the EGR cooler, and if necessary, replace it. If it is determined that the EGR cooler has leaked internally, the intake manifold will also be replaced. The EGR pipe connecting the cooler to the manifold will be cleaned. Note: An operator may be alerted to this condition by one or more of the following symptoms: A warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of engine coolant, a reduction in engine power, an unpleasant odour (exhaust gas), an unusual noise from the engine compartment, and/or smoke from the engine compartment.

Recall 2016461 395 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the housing of the driver's frontal airbag inflator may have been incorrectly welded during manufacturing and could separate from the base plate during an airbag deployment. If the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, metal fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, which could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag.

Recall 2014142 250 units in Canada

Structure

On certain vehicles, the rear side door lock mechanisms may have been manufactured incorrectly. As a result, child door locks may disengage if the interior rear door handle is pulled, thereby allowing a rear door to be opened with a second pull of the inside door handle. This could allow a child to open a rear door inadvertently, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the rear door locks and replace as necessary.

I purchased a 2014 BMW X5 on 8/31 Took possession of it 9/7 because the dealership needed to replace tires. On 9/15 while driving for about 3 minutes, the powertrain warning came on my screen and the truck began to shake. I turned around and parked in my driveway and turned the vehicle off. At which time smoke was visible from the engine area. As the smoke began to worsen, flames shot out and I called the fire department for help. I was only in possession of the vehicle for 8 days and the dealership told me that there’s nothing that they can do for me. I was within the 15 day of possession or 500 mile time window

POWER TRAIN

I purchased my vehicle around Labor Day of 2020. I still own and operate the vehicle. Since I have owned my vehicle, I have repeatedly been told my turbos are leaking oil, etc. I have even had several oil leaks repaired on my car. Fast forward six years, and I am buying 5 quarts of oil every two weeks and topping up the oil in my vehicle every week, at least 2-3 quarts per week. I also have smoke coming out of the tail pipes intermittently. The car also smells like it is burning oil, but there are no visible oil drips on the ground currently. I discovered by research there have been two lawsuits: Isley v. BMW of North America LLC, et al., Case No. [XXX] in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey ([XXX] [XXX]), and Bang v. BMW (Original [XXX]) ([XXX]). I have had repeated documented repairs and I never received a notice for these cases. I need my vehicle repaired and I need BMW to take ownership of this defect. I never received one notice regarding these lawsuits, or I would have had my vehicle repaired. I only have 102,000 miles (currently), so my vehicle should be covered in terms of mileage. ENGINE

Due to issues in the engine design the timing chains become loose and get excessive slack. BMW has revised the design multiple times but the corrective action requires complete removal of transmission and engine to replace all timing chain components. Unfortunately my engine has suffered timing chain failure and requires replacement. This leads to engine failure while driving and unsafe conditions.

Vehicle shutoff at high rate of speed causing me to not have power steering or brakes. This was very frightening and lucky to not cause a major accident. This was due to the High Pressure Fuel Pump failing that has extended warranty but should be a recall as this is very dangerous.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Almost caused a major accident when High Pressure Fuel Pump failed unexpectedly while driving. Good thing my family was not in car when this happened. This is completely unacceptable and should be recalled on this vehicle just like many others of this model. I have included picture of metal shavings in fuel system from high pressure fuel pump failure.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

2014 BMW x5 xdrive35D equipped with a Bosch Cp4 (HPFP) High Pressure Fuel Pump that is known to implode., cause severe damage to my vehicles fuel system that is costing me thousands in repairs. My year make model and build year all fall under the recall but my vin is not on the recall list. BMW has no answers for me and just says nothing they can do. BOSCH CP4 HPFP failed and released metal shavings throughout all fuel lines, injec BMW had a recall for 12K vehicles but mine was not on the recall list and BMW cannot explain why given that my fuel pump exploded like so many other BOSCH CP4 . I believe BMW knew that these pumps were bad and did not notify all owners that had them in in their car.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The high-pressure fuel pump failed/disintegrated and released metal debris into the entire fuel system and most likely into the engine. The car stalled and shut off in the middle of intersection and almost caused a crash. The entire fuel system will need to be replaced due to the intrusion of the metal fragments into the fuel system.

POWER TRAIN

The vehicle has been part of recall #[XXX] related to engine EGR cooler leakage. The EGR cooler is part of emission's control. On this vehicle the egr can leak which causes coolant to get into intake manifold and potentially cause risk of fire. BMW denied to cover the repair on my vehicle reason I am asking for support. Have already called BMW customer service 1800-831-1117 but unfortunately no support was offered. Car have been fixed by replacing the egr with genuine BMW part. Invoice attached.
