Recalls on the 2011 Chevrolet Express

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2023210 25,587 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: On certain vehicles, an unused wiring harness for a rear HVAC blower motor, located in the left B-pillar area, could become damaged if exposed to moisture or contaminants. If this happens, the wires could short circuit. Note: This recall only affects cutaway chassis incomplete vehicles. Safety Risk: A short circuit can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to bring your vehicle to a dealership to seal the wiring for the rear HVAC blower motor at the left B-pillar.

Recall 2020479 56,979 units in Canada

Other

Issue: Certain vehicles may have incorrect body control module software. As a result, the immobilization system is not active during the learning procedure for a new "unlearned" blank replacement key could be used during a 30 minute reprogramming procedure to disable the immobilization system. During this time, the vehicle cannot be driven. Safety Risk: This small error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. General Motors has made changes to vehicle software to ensure that all unsold and new vehicles have the correct body control module software.

Recall 2018212 368 units in Canada

Accessories

On certain vehicles equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by Kidde directly. Note: For more information about recalled fire extinguishers, please visit www.kidde.com

Recall 2015352 442 units in Canada

Brakes

Certain vehicles equipped with a hinged left side rear door may have a condition where inadequate clearance between the rear brake lines and the lower fuel filler hose clamp may result in abrasion to one or both rear brake lines. This condition could cause brake fluid loss which could result in decreased brake line pressure, increased brake pedal travel and increased stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. This condition could cause various warning lights to illuminate in the instrument panel of the vehicle such the red “BRAKE” telltale symbol; illumination of the Stabilitrak telltale symbol; scrolling display of “Service Brake”, “Service Stabilitrak,” and “Service Traction Control” messages in the Driver Information Centre (DIC); and audible alerts/chimes. Correction: Dealers will inspect the brake lines. If the clearance is found to be below specification, the brake lines will be replaced with a new part design that provides adequate clearance.

Recall 2014352 13 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelled vehicles, the CNG high pressure regulator may leak natural gas. Should a leak occur in the presence of an ignition source, a fire or explosion could result, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the regulator. Note: If a leak is suspected, owners should not start nor drive their vehicles, and have the vehicle immediately towed, inspected and repaired.

Recall 2014083 25,710 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Certain vehicles may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 201 - Occupant Protection. During a frontal impact below the airbag deployment threshold, if an unbelted front passenger's head were to impact the instrument panel where the passenger airbag is located, it could decelerate at a rate higher than what is allowable by the standard. This could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will install energy absorbing trim pieces on the passenger side of the instrument panel, and on 2012-2014 model year 1500 series vehicles, dealers will also replace the front passenger seat belt retractor.

Recall 2011188 631 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the right rear brake hose may contact the tire or wheel rim, which could cause chafe damage resulting in a brake fluid leak. This could increase stopping distances, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will secure the right rear brake hose to ensure sufficient clearance to the wheel/tire assembly. The brake hose will also be inspect for damage and, if necessary, replaced.

Recall 2010454 3,945 units in Canada

Suspension

On certain vehicles, the rear axle cross pin was improperly heat treated (during the manufacturing process) and could fracture and become displaced within the rear differential. As a result the driver may hear a banging noise emanating from the rear axle. Also, if the pin shifts out of position it could create an interference and cause the rear axle to lock. This could cause a loss of vehicle control, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the rear axle cross pin.

ENGINE

I WAS PULLING BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY MY VAN STARTED IDLING VERY ROUGH AND ERRATIC. THE VEHICLE DISPLAY READ "ENGINE POWER REDUCED. SERVICE TRACTION. ESC OFF." I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK SO I IMMEDIATELY SHUT THE CAR OFF. I STARTED MY CAR UP AGAIN AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND IT RAN FINE AGAIN BUT THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" WAS STILL ON. THE NEXT DAY I WAS HEADED TO WORK AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE SAME MESSAGE POPPED UP ON THE DISPLAY AND THE VAN LOST POWER. I HAD TO PULL OVER SO NOT TO BE A NUISANCE FOR OTHER DRIVERS. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I STARTED THE VAN UP AND I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO A NEARBY DEALERSHIP. WHEN I GOT THE DEALERSHIP THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE OF COURSE. I LEFT IT RUNNING AS I RAN INSIDE TO GET A TECH. HE CAME OUTSIDE AND SEEN THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" ON. HE BROUGHT OUT THE SCANNER AND SAID THAT IT WAS SOMETHING WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. MY PREVIOUS VEHICLE WAS ALSO A GM PRODUCT, 2001 GMC SAVANNA 2500. I'VE HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH IT. SEEMS LIKE 10 YEARS LATER YOU GUYS SHOULD IMPROVE THESE CARS.

THIS AMBULANCE OVER THE PAST THIRTY DAYS HAS BEEN DISPLAYING FALSE MILEAGES WITH MESSAGES THAT THE DEF TANK WAS ALMOST EMPTY AND THE VEHICLE WAS GOING TO GO INTO LIMP MODE. MILEAGES VARIED FROM LOWS IN THE 150'S TO HIGHS OF 2430 DURING THE SAME AMBULANCE TRANSPORT. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO WATSON CHEVROLET IN TUCSON. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE DEF TANK FOR $3600. THE SERVICE WRITER DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF A TBS ON THIS PROBLEM. I CONTACTED THE CHEVROLET CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AND WAS TOLD BY ROSE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS EMISSION RELATED AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY WARRANTY. THE SERVICE REQUEST NUMBER WAS 71-1202349549. I WAS LATER CALLED BY ANTHONY AT EXTENSION 11483. HE SAID THEY WERE UNAWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS LIKE THIS AND THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR REPAIRS. WHEN I TOLD HIM THE DEALER QUOTE WAS WAY OVER TWICE THE COST OF THE SAME REPAIR IN SHOW LOW AZ. HE SAID EVERY DEALER WAS ABLE TO SET THEIR OWN LABOR RATES. I TOLD HIM THERE WERE DOZENS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET HE HAD NO COMMENT. I HAVE A FEELING THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO COVER-UP. I'M VERY AFRAID SOMEONE COULD DIE IN OUR AMBULANCE BECAUSE OF FAULTY READING ON THE DEF TANK CAUSING THE ENGINE TO GO INTO LIMP MODE ON AN EMERGENCY TRANSPORT.

ABOUT 10 DAYS AFTER PURCHASING OUR 2011 EXPRESS VAN MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING DOWN I 81 BETWEEN SHIPPENSBURG AND NEWVILLE, PA AND THE VAN STARTED PULLING TO AN ABRUPT HALT FOR NO REASON. I CHECKED THE PARKING BRAKE AND THOUGHT MAYBE I WAS RESTING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. NOTHING THE VAN WOULD NOT MOVE. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK AND IT WAS OK AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 5 MORE TIMES. I TOOK IT BACK TO H AND H CHEVY AND OF COURSE THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. ON ONE OCCASION GOING DOWN PA 996 JUST PAST LETTERKENNY DEPOT, ABOUT 54-55 MPH, IT DID IT AGAIN THIS TIME REALLY HARD AND MY WIFE HAD TO HANG ON TO KEEP FROM HITTING HER HEAD. THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED SAYING CHECK ALL-WHEEL DRIVE IMMEDIATELY, CHECK LIMITED SLIP IMMEDIATELY. I TOOK IT BACK AND H AND H OF SHIPPENSBURG SAID NOTHING SHOWED UP ON THE COMPUTER. A YEAR LATER I FOUND OUT ABOUT A RECALL ON THE VAN.. I TOOK THIS TO H AND H AND THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT BECAUSE IT DID NOT HAVE A GM RECALL NUMBER. I WENT 3 MORE TIME THIS YEAR IN JANUARY. THEY NEVER EVEN LOOKED INTO IT. IT HASN'T DONE IT ANYMORE. I FIGURE THE PART IS PROBABLY WORN OUT BY NOW. $38,000.00 CASH I PAID FOR A VAN AND NOBODY WANTED TO LOOK AT THE REAR SPLINE PIN.
