NHTSA investigations into the 2013 Ford F-350
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this RQ to investigate allegations that the scope and remedy of safety recall 13V-535 were inadequate. Recall 13V-535 was limited to a relatively small population of Ambulance Package vehicles and ODI received complaints of pickup trucks and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles being affected by the same defect. Ford manufactured approximately 555,985 subject vehicles between February 22, 2010 and January 30, 2015 that may be affected by defective EGT sensors and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software calibration. The subject vehicles are equippe...
Recalls on the 2013 Ford F-350
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

EQUIPMENT
PJ's Truck Bodies & Equipment Co., (PJ's) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Ford F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty chassis modified by PJ's and equipped with certain Muncie Power Products PTO Assemblies. In the affected vehicles, oil may leak from the PTO pressure switch onto a thermal blanket covering the exhaust.
Risk: The leaking oil may soak into the thermal blanket covering the exhaust, which when combined with heat from exhaust, may result in an increased risk of fire.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

Engine
Certain ambulance or fire package vehicles with 6.7L diesel engines may experience a "stop safety now" warning message and 5 audible chimes if an Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor fault is detected. Engine torque would be gradually reduced by 70 percent over a period of 45 seconds to a power-reduced level that is maintained. During this time, there would be no effect on steering, braking, lighting, electrical, or restraint systems, allowing the operator to maneuver the vehicle to a safe location. Such an occurrence could also result in an engine shut down and subsequent inability to quickly restart the vehicle. If this condition were to occur when an ambulance or fire engine vehicle was transporting a patient or providing medical assistance, it could delay medical treatment and increase the risk of injury to the patient. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module with updated software.

I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS. THEY REPLACED ALMOST ALL COMPONENTS IN THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK INCLUDING THE TRACK BAR, STABILIZER, BEARINGS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED BUSHINGS. WHILE TOWING OUR FIFTH-WHEEL TRAILER WITH OUR FORD F350 DRW TRUCK, THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) CAUGHT FIRE. WHILE TOWING OUR FIFTH-WHEEL, WE TURNED FROM THE HIGHWAY ONTO A CITY STREET IN MESA, AZ. WE HEARD A LOUD "POP" AND THOUGHT WE BLEW A TIRE. AFTER PULLING OVER AND CHECKING THAT ALL TIRES WERE FINE, WE CONTINUED ON. WE NOTICED REDUCED POWER TO THE TRUCK AND THE TURBO BOOST WAS ZERO. WE PULLED OVER AGAIN TO LOOK FOR SIGNS OF A PROBLEM. WE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND DID NOT SEE ANY OBVIOUS HOSES BLOWN OR ISSUES. THE TRUCK WAS STILL RUNNING, SO WE CONTINUED ON SLOWLY AS WE WERE ALMOST HOME. NEAR ELLSWORTH/THOMAS ROAD IN MESA, I GOT A NOTICE, "REDUCED ENGINE POWER," AS MY 14YO SON YELLED, "THERE'S SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE TRUCK." WE PULLED OVER AGAIN AND MY WIFE AND SON SAW FLAMES SHOOTING OUT OF THE TAILPIPE AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS GLOWING RED HOT. THE DPF WAS BLOWING FLAMS OUT TOWARDS THE GROUND. WE EMPTIED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER WITH NO EFFECT. OUR TRAILER HAS A WATER HOSE SO WE SPRAYED WATER ON IT FOR ABOUT 10 MIN TO COOL IT DOWN AND STOP IT FROM REIGNITING. WE DID NOT CALL POLICE AS MY WIFE AND I SHARE NEARLY 40 YEARS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE. WE EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND CALLED FOR A TOW. AFTER $10,000 IN REPAIRS, WE HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE FROM FORD. WE HAVE NOT FILED AN INSURANCE CLAIM YET AND ARE WORKING TO CONTACT FORD AGAIN. FORD KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE DEF/DPF SYSTEMS. DRIVERS HAVE NO INSTRUMENTATION TO SEE THE TEMP READINGS ON THE FOUR TEMP GAUGES ALONG THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. HOW ARE THERE NO ERROR CODES OR NOTICES WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON FIRE??? MY AND MY WIFE'S EXPERIENCE HANDLING EMERGENCIES PREVENTED A TOTAL LOSS OF OUR VEHICLE AND POTENTIAL DEATH OF OUR FAMILY. PICS ATTACHED. PICS OF RED HOT EXHAUST ARE NOT OUR VEHICLE, BUT A VEHICLE THAT HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS WHAT OURS LOOKED LIKE.

WHILE DRIVING AT 55MPH, RECEIVED A "LOW FUEL PRESSURE" WARNING. SECONDS LATER, A FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH COULD NOT BE CONTROLLED. RESULT WAS A TOTAL LOSS OF THE TRUCK AND THE FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER THAT WAS BEING TOWED. A FUEL FILTER HAD BEEN CHANGED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FIRE AND SUSPICION IS THAT THE FUEL LINE WAS NOT PROPERLY REATTACHED. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS IN THE AREA OF THE UPPER FUEL FILTER WHICH HELPS CONFIRM THIS SUSPICION. PROPER REMOVAL AND REINSTALLATION OF THE FUEL LINES IN THIS VEHICLE ARE KEY SAFETY ITEMS. FORD SHOULD RECONSIDER THE METHOD BY WHICH FUEL FILTERS ARE CHANGED IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE NEED TO REMOVE AND REINSTALL FUEL LINES.

ENGINE FIRE - WHILE TRAVELING AT 55MPH AND TOWING A FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER ON THE INTERSTATE, THE VEHICLE INDICATED "LOW FUEL PRESSURE" ON THE DASH PANEL. A FIRE ERUPTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SENDING SMOKE INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. AFTER STOPPING, THE FIRE SPREAD TO THE REMAINDER OF THE TRUCK AND THEN CAUGHT THE FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER ON FIRE. BOTH THE TRUCK AND THE FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER WERE DESTROYED IN THE FIRE. I BELIEVE THAT A DIESEL FUEL LEAK CAUSED THE FIRE AND RESULTING DAMAGE. BECAUSE THIS FIRE OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, IT LED TO A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED.

Was driving at 55mph and suddenly truck went into a terrible death wobble & almost caused a serious crash. On 11/25/2025 I had taken it in to the ford dealership to correct this problem since it had happened four times in August & September of this year. Which also almost caused four serious accidents. The ford dealer replaced L & R dragline ends & adjuster sleeve.Replaced right outer tie rod end & replaced track bar ball joint. Performed 3D wheel alignment & road tested on highway..This is the second time I’m writing you to get this recalled.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
My 2013 F-350 Super Duty 6.7 Diesel truck has a problem with the DEF system and power loss. I had a check engine light come on, and an AutoZone scan shows a P20BA Power Train System and a few other codes were noted (see attached documents). I took it to my selling dealer, and they confirmed the Reductant Heater needs to be replaced. I found out there is a recall for this defective part on just about every Ford F-Series 6.7 Diesel "except" my specific year and model. The recall on all of the other F-Series trucks have the same defective part as my truck has. Why is Ford getting away with this. If the part installed in my truck is the same defective part that is being replaced on all of the other trucks, why is my truck not included in the recall, it is the same defective part. It is costing me over $1,700.00 to replace a known to Ford and NTSB, a defective part. I would think Ford should be ordered to include my truck in the recall or replace at cost of parts only and not the full-blown excessive charge I am having to pay. PLEASE HELP

ENGINE
Several months ago I noticed a shrill whining noise coming from the engine compartment. Upon closer inspection, I observed raw emissions coming from the exhaust manifold. Upon research I noticed that this was a very common problem with the 6.7 diesel between 2011 and 2014 with Ford even putting out a service bulletin (SSM50330) and designing repair parts and new heads for their defective design of exhaust studs. The repair of this defective part is very costly and they expect the owners of the vehicles to bear the entire cost of this repair. This is not only a safety issue because of exhaust gases entering the cab of the vehicle, but is also an EPA issue because these gases are passing directly to the atmosphere without being treated or going through the catalytic converter!

We have experienced “death wobble” several times with the Ford. Every time we get all the necessary parts replaced and they’ll last about 6 months and the death wobble will return. It’s highly dangerous as you lose control of the vehicle and it can walk into another lane with traffic. You are unable to steer when this is happening. The only way to regain control is to slow the vehicle down to around 35/40 mph. It’s a danger to us and to others on the road.
