NHTSA investigations into the 2022 Nissan Rogue

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

PE24020 Opened 5 Aug 2024 Closed 24 Aug 2026 STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

2021 Nissan Rogue Inner Tie Rod Failures

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to assess allegations of tie rod bending, deformation, or related steering linkage damage in certain 2021 Nissan Rogue vehicles. A bent tie rod can affect wheel alignment and steering geometry, and in some circumstances may result in steering pull, abnormal tire wear, reduced steering precision, difficulty maintaining directional control, or loss of vehicle steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), Early Warning Reporting data, manufacturer field reports, warranty claim...

Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure

On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0...

Recalls on the 2022 Nissan Rogue

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2025356 37,836 units in Canada

Engine

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the engine could make abnormal noises and a warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with 1.5 L or 2.0 L variable compression engines. Safety Risk: An engine failure could cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels and/or increase the risk of a vehicle fire. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash or injury. Corrective actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine. On certain vehicles, the dealer will also update the engine control module.

Recall 2022599 5,461 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: Under certain conditions, a software problem could cause the in-vehicle infotainment system to continuously reboot. If this happens, the rearview camera image will not appear on the display. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and ask you to make an appointment with your local dealer to update the in-vehicle infotainment system software. For vehicles with over-the-air (OTA) update capability, Nissan will send a wireless over-the-air software update to each vehicle.

Recall 2022498 493 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Issue: On certain vehicles, the left- and right-rear seat belts may not retract to their storage position. Canadian regulations require seat belts to retract fully when not in use. Safety Risk: A seat belt that doesn't retract properly could be difficult to use. Not wearing a seat belt can increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the left- and right-rear seat belts. They will be replaced, if necessary.

Recall 2022398 244 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: Under certain conditions, a software problem could cause the in-vehicle infotainment system to reset. If you shift to reverse while the computer is resetting, the rearview camera image will not appear on the display. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles sold to rental fleets.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I took my Rogue to the dealership at City Limits Nissan on Monday 10/6/25 as it had power issues and the engine light came on stating 'Engine Malfunction Power reduce Service now' I then called NHTSA and filed a complaint about a recall for my Nissan Rogue that Nissan has yet to have a remedy. I got the car back on Tuesday afternoon 10/7/25 and they said it did not have to do with the recall. I drove the car straight home. I went to work the next morning and as I was pulling into a parking spot in parking garage, all of the sudden, I was crashed into the wall at a high rate of speed. I am extremely concerned that this may have been a malfunction with the Nissan Rogue as this occurred less then 24 hours after it was serviced. My car was totaled and the damage looks like it hit at 30 mph or more which is extremely alarming as I was slowing coming into the parking spot. I don't know exactly what happened however if there have been any issues with Nissans and sudden acceleration, I feel this needs to be investigated. My Rogue is a 2022 and had to have the engine replaced in early 2024. Nissan could not give any explanation as to why. My car has been taken to a salvage yard and I am concerned that if there was and issue, any evidence of an issued could be destroyed. Had there not been heavy duty cables, I could have gone further through the parking garage wall and fallen 3 stories.

The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while waiting in the front passenger seat for her husband, she extended her left leg to depress the brake pedal and start the engine. Soon after starting the vehicle, the contact felt the vehicle slowly moving backwards while the vehicle was in park(P). While in a state of panic, the contact opened the passenger door and screamed to her husband that the vehicle was moving. As the vehicle continued to accelerate backwards while on an incline, the vehicle ran over a curb and eventually hit a tree, which stopped the acceleration. The contact stated that no warning lights had appeared on the instrument panel as the vehicle remained in park(P) during the failure. Several bystanders came to the contact's aid to assist her after the failure. The air bags did not deploy. The contact's right knee and right inner calf were bruised; however, the contact did not seek medical attention. A police report was not filed, and no damages were reported. Despite the failure, the contact's husband managed to drive away from the scene. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V457000(Power Train), which she linked to the failure. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

POWER TRAIN

My 2022 Nissan Rogue has entered reduced-power/limp mode approximately nine times. The specific component causing the malfunction has not been identified. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. When the malfunction occurs, the vehicle displays a malfunction/reduced-power warning and substantially reduces available engine power. Several occurrences happened during a long-distance trip involving highway, mountain, and desert driving. The unexpected reduction in power creates a safety concern during highway travel, merging, passing, climbing grades, or travel in remote areas. The problem is intermittent and has not been successfully reproduced by an authorized Nissan dealership. I presented the vehicle to a Nissan dealer and reported the repeated events while the vehicle had approximately 56,500 miles and remained below Nissan's 60,000-mile powertrain warranty mileage limit. The dealership advised that it could not diagnose the problem unless the malfunction occurs again with an active diagnostic code. I have also reported the problem to Nissan Consumer Affairs. The underlying cause remains unidentified and the vehicle has not been repaired for this condition. Warning messages appear when the malfunction occurs. During the long-distance trip, diagnostic codes were cleared to restore vehicle operation. The vehicle would then operate normally for a period before unexpectedly entering reduced-power mode again. My primary concern is that after approximately nine occurrences, I still have no diagnosis or assurance that the condition will not recur during highway operation or another situation where maintaining vehicle power is necessary for safe operation.

Engine failure, known issue per Nissan service employees, second and third combustion cylinders fill with anti-freeze coolant with no errors or warning lights in vehicle. This was noticed by the temperature gauge climbing during acceleration and falling while at speed. I am told it is a manufacturing defect by the service department but due to the 76,000 miles on the 2022 vehicle it is not covered by Nissan, an $8000 bill for the long block replacement. This needs your attention as in my local dealership there have been 5 instances of this in the last month. Driving down the highway on a family road trip the car suddenly flashed all warning lights and goes in to limp mode. We’re on the highway surrounded by cars going 80+ and trying to get to the side. We’re reach an exit and limp to an autozone where they read a code about an EGR system. Car gets towed to the dealer and they’ve determined there is coolant in the oil and the engine needs replaced. There is a recall for engine failure but they say this isn’t related. They can’t say what caused the failure but assured me it wasn’t the engine bearing recall.

I purchased the vehicle about 4 months ago and I've only driven it maybe 1 month out of 4 due to being in the shop for multiple egr and throttle issues. I am currently sitting with it broke down once again for the same issues for the 3rd time. The engine loses power out of no where while driven and gives a warning that says engine malfunction power reduced and all safety features are then shut down. This leaves my car only traveling no more than 10mph. I was on the interstate!!

I was driving to work. I noticed what I thought was some gravel dust behind me. I got to a stop light and my car started shaking. No engine or warning lights came on. I shut my car off and started it up again. It was still shaking. When I pulled away from the stop light, I notice there was white smoke coming out my tailpipe. I immediately pulled over and called the dealership I thought it from and a tow truck. I haven’t been given anything official from the dealership, but the service department emailed me this yesterday: “Car was smoking from exhaust, pressure tested coolant system did not hold pressure, inspected cylinders with boar scope found coolant in cylinder 1, coolant saturation ruined the turbo and converter” I have now asked the dealership to do a “Metal Debris Test”

My Nissan rogue had a PCV valve recall and I'm still getting sick from the car. I've had it at the dealerships and they can't find anything wrong but the car is causing severe migraine headaches, severe neck pain and severe abdominal and pelvic pain. It doesnt always happen and there is no way for me to figure out what is causing It. I put a portable CO2 detector in the car and found nothing. It can happen with air on or off. I can't figure it out but it's making me and my family sick. I called Nissan and they told me to get a docto rs note that the car is making me sick to fbe able to o file a claim. I don't know how to prove the car is causing all the illness.

On July 15 at approximately 4:30 pm my daughter's 2022 Nissan Rogue stalled while she was making a turn in a busy intersection. She was able to restart it and make it to a safe place to call a tow truck. There were no warning lights on my dashboard. The vehicle had just been serviced less than two weeks prior. The vehicle was towed to the local Nissan dealership. The next day the inspected it and determined it had overheated and coolant was entering the exhaust manifold. The technician noted that the coolant reservoir was very low.

I was driving on the interstate going 70-80 mph and my car would not accelerate and I got a bunch of yellow error codes. I pulled over and shut it off and restarted. I drove it straight to the nearest Nissan dealership. In that time driving to the dealership my car barely would go over 60 mph and the RPM's would go high then low. The dealership looked it over later in the day and called me and said that 'nothing is wrong with it.' No error codes. No problems. They drove it 30 miles. I am not satisfied with this. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY issue and I am scared to drive again knowing I may not be able to accelerate on the interstate. I took a picture of my dashboard and errors that showed when I was pulled over and I gave this to the dealership. They still said nothing was wrong. I got a second CVT error that I do not have a picture of that one. I opened a case with Nissan directly. I am waiting to hear back from them. (Filed case on XXX case # XXX- [XXX], CS representative). Re: Formal Demand for Repurchase or Replacement Under Utah Law and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act Vehicle: 2023 Nissan Rogue VIN: [XXX] Current Mileage: 104732 To Whom It May Concern: I am the owner of a 2023 Nissan Rogue and am writing to formally demand that Nissan North America, Inc. resolve a serious and ongoing defect affecting my vehicle by repurchasing the vehicle, replacing it with a comparable new vehicle, or otherwise providing an appropriate remedy. The vehicle has experienced a substantial defect involving the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Nissan replaced the original CVT under the manufacturer's warranty at no cost to me. However, immediately following that replacement, the replacement transmission began exhibiting serious defects, including seizing, repeated stalling while driving, and the appearance of electrical fault codes. The vehicle continues to stall unexpectedly, creating an unreasonable safety risk for me, my passengers, and other motorists. A vehicle that loses propulsion while in traffic cannot reasonably be considered safe, reliable, or fit for its intended purpose. Despite Nissan's opportunity to repair this defect, the problems remain unresolved. Replacing one defective transmission with another defective transmission has not corrected the underlying issue. These defects substantially impair the vehicle's use, value, and safety. I have complied with Nissan's warranty requirements by presenting the vehicle to authorized Nissan dealerships for diagnosis and repair. Nissan has been afforded a reasonable opportunity to repair the vehicle but has been unable to provide a permanent remedy. Accordingly, I believe I may be entitled to relief under applicable Utah law governing warranty obligations and defective new motor vehicles, as well as under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 15 U.S.C. §§ 2301–2312, which provides consumers with remedies when a manufacturer fails to honor its written warranty obligations. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I am reporting a serious safety concern involving my 2022 Nissan Rogue equipped with the 1.5L engine. While driving in normal traffic, my vehicle suddenly displayed an "Engine Malfunction" warning with no prior indication of an engine problem. Immediately after the warning appeared, the vehicle rapidly lost power and could no longer maintain the speed of surrounding traffic. I had very limited ability to accelerate or safely maneuver, creating a significant risk of being struck from behind or becoming stranded in an active travel lane. There was no advance warning that a catastrophic engine failure was imminent. The vehicle ultimately became inoperable and was towed to an authorized Nissan dealership. The dealership diagnosed the engine with coolant leaking into the cylinders and determined that replacement of the engine assembly, turbocharger, and catalytic converter was required at an estimated cost exceeding $10,000. My vehicle had previously experienced engine-related concerns and was included in Recall Campaign R25D1. That recall was completed, but less than 30 days later the engine failed catastrophically. Based on this sequence of events, I am concerned that the existing recall may not identify or address all engine conditions that can result in sudden loss of motive power and catastrophic engine failure. I have since learned of numerous publicly reported complaints from other owners describing similar failures involving coolant intrusion, sudden loss of power, and complete engine replacement in 2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles equipped with this engine. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether these engine failures represent a broader safety defect and whether additional corrective action is necessary to protect the driving public.

POWER TRAIN

Problem: CVT transmission failure with code P187E at 73500 miles. Nissan dealer confirmed clean fluid but quoted $9800 for transmission replacement. Vehicle still drives but repeatedly enters failsafe/limp mode, limiting speed and acceleration without warning. This occurred multiple times on the highway, creating a serious safety hazard due to sudden loss of power in trafic. This is a know issue with hundreds of similar complaints filed for 2022 Rogue 1.5 CVT models. The failure pattern is consistent: code P187E, failsafe mode activation, and dealer recommending full CVT replacement even with proper maintenance. Safety concern: Sudden loss of power while driving on highway. Vehicle speed drops unexpectedly from 65+ mph to under 40 mph when failsafe mode engages. This creates high risk of rear-end collision, especially durng merging or in heavy traffic. My family and other drivers are at risk.
