NHTSA investigations into the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Simultaneous Loss of Low-Beam Headlights

On May 14, 2014, General Motors (GM) submitted a Part 573 defect information report initiating NHTSA Safety Recall 14V-251 to remedy the subject vehicles.GM will remedy a defect condition in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) by modifying the vehicle's electrical harnessing.GM also announced a customer satisfaction bulletin to address this issue on model year (MY) 2008-2013 Chevrolet Corvettes. Both programs will be conducted free of charge.According to GM, when the engine heats up and cools down (from normal use), the plastic material in the UBEC housing expands at a different rate...

Loss of Low Beam Headlights

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 30 reports from consumers alleging that, after driving for a short time (5 to 30 minutes), both low beam headlights stopped working simultaneously and without warning. The low beam headlights remained inoperative for the remainder of the drive cycle, however no other lighting is affected.General Motors (GM) provided information in response to ODI's information request letter explaining that the loss of headlights is caused by a fractured low beam circuit wire in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC), a device...

Recalls on the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

14V251000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured March 29, 2004, through June 22, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) housing can expand and cause the headlamp low beam relay control circuit wire to bend. If the wire is repeatedly bent, it may fracture causing a loss of low beam headlamp illumination.

Risk: The loss of low beam headlamp illumination will decrease the driver's visibility, as well as the vehicle's conspicuity to other motorists, increasing the risk of a crash.

09V491000

STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005 THROUGH 2007 CORVETTE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A REMOVABLE ROOF AND MODEL YEAR 2006 AND 2007 CORVETTE Z06 VEHICLES. THE ADHESIVE BETWEEN THE ROOF PANEL AND THE FRAME MAY SEPARATE. IF THERE IS A PARTIAL SEPARATION, THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE ONE OR MORE SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS A SNAPPING NOISE WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS, WIND NOISE, POOR ROOF PANEL FIT, ROOF PANEL MOVEMENT/BOUNCE WHEN A DOOR OR HATCH IS CLOSED, OR A WATER LEAK IN THE HEADLINER.

Risk: IF THERE IS A COMPLETE SEPARATION, THE ROOF PANEL MAY DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN, IT COULD STRIKE A FOLLOWING VEHICLE AND CAUSE INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2014174 3,054 units in Canada

Lights And Instruments

On certain vehicles, wiring within the underhood fuse panel wiring may break, causing intermittent low beam function. This could compromise driver visibility and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the underhood fuse panel.

Recall 2010134 1,459 units in Canada

Brakes

Certain vehicles equipped with tilt and telescoping steering column may have an intermittent or open condition in a connector in the Steering Wheel Position Sensor (SWPS) circuit located in the steering column. If this intermittent or open condition occurs, the “SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM” message is displayed, and a short-duration brake apply may occur if the signals for steering wheel rotation or ground are corrupted. The manufacturer assessed the brake application as observable, but controllable and vehicle handling is maintained by minor corrections in steering, however, if the driver does not respond to the change in vehicle movement, it could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, install a terminal position assurance clip to the connector.

Recall 2009362 972 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles equipped with a removable roof, the adhesive between the roof and the frame may separate. If there is a complete separation, the roof panel may detach from the vehicle and should this happen while driving, it could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install a new design roof panel.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

NOTED A SPONTANEOUS FUEL SMELL IN CABIN BEHIND DRIVERS SEAT AFTER RETURNING TO PARKED VEHICLE. AT FIRST ASSUMED THAT THE TANK MAY HAVE BEEN OVERFILLED. THE STRONG FUMES PERSISTED IN THE CABIN AND ALSO WHEN APPROACHING THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE FUEL TANK EMPTIED BELOW THE 1/2 MARK. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO CHEVY DEALER JUST BEFORE WARRANTY EXPIRATION. I WAS TOLD IT WAS LEAK TESTED AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY LEAK. I HAVE SINCE TAKEN IT TO X3 INDEPENDENT MECHANICS SPENDING OVER 600.00 AND NONE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CORRECTLY DIAGNOSE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE FUMES ONLY OCCUR WHEN THE TANK IS FILLED JUST PAST THE 1/2 FULL MARK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE MECHANICS THAT THE TANKS WOULD NEED TO BE DROPPED TO FIND THE PROBLEM THIS WOULD BE AT A MINIMUM COST OF 1600.00$. NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE 1/2 FULL FOR OVER 2YEARS NOW. OF COURSE I FEEL MY VEHICLE MAY STILL BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS, NOT ONLY THE EXPOSURE TO THE FUMES BUT ALSO THE RISK OF A FIRE OR EXPLOSION AND I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS BEING NEGLIGENT BY NOT ADMITTING THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THEIR DESIGN FLAW. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND IN THE CORVETTE FORUM THE DESIGN HAS BEEN CHANGED IN NEWER MODELS.

There was a strong fuel smell after the last 2 times I drove it. I took it to the shop and they tell me the evap canister was saturated and the fuel pump had small cracks in it likely seeping when the car heats up. I am having the fuel pump replaced, the evap canister and several seals/hoses in hopes it won't leak again.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

After filling the tank with fuel, I was immediately aware of a strong smell of gas. I am always extremely careful not to overfill causing any fuel to escape. The heavy smell/escape of fumes is such that the car simply can’t be put in my garage. The risk of igniting and fire is a risk that is unacceptable. General Motors knows about this issue as they did notify me in 2017 that my car could have this condition and that if it did, they would fix it at no charge. I didn’t have the issue at that time so didn’t take the car in. So, now that I the problem, I have taken the car to Bradley Chevrolet in my town, Lake Havasu City, AZ and am told that in order to inspect the car for this issue, I will have to pay for 10 hours of labor ($2200) and only then will they see if they can find a new tank at another dealer. You see, GM no longer makes or has the tanks (according to their parts department). I have contacted their Customer Service Department and have a Case (#[XXX]). I am told that they will not participate going forward unless I spend the $2200 and then if they can’t find a new tank, they will put the car back together and send me home with it! It’s my belief that since this is a documented safety defect resulting in an apparent fire hazard that they would/should take care of it. Strong fuel smell inside car as well as in garage. Drivers side tank does appear to have a leak when filled. Doing a search online it appears this is a common issue with this vehicle and that a recall/repair was created for owners however my 2007 (not the original owner) I suspect has since expired. We are having an issue with our vehicle leaking fuel on left side fuel tank. The vehicle is constant smell of gas on that left side. It has been a safety concern for us and the dealer wants us to pay at least $1200 just for diagnostic alone. There was a Special Coverage Adjustment for this issue but we were never notified. The notice is Special Coverage Adjustment 15682. I spoke with GM/Chevrolet Customer Assistance and spoke with [XXX] he said I would have to get diagnostic and that the fee could be applied to repair. I understand there is a time limit on most things but it seems that something that relates to safety issue should not have and end date. This is a type of car that most people just have as a collector car and you can see by the low miles that this is the case. I am not trying to get a repair on a vehicle that has 100,000 or more miles. It may seem trivial but this is important to me. AIR BAGS

The Body Control Module has failed and there are no replacement parts available except used parts. The BCM is hard coded with the VIN. If you use a BCM from another car, certain safety systems are deactivated such as the air bags. The BCM is central to the electronic architecture so all other systems are at risk. The unit can be responsible for the car not starting, the headlights not working, the power windows and door locks failing, or in my case the active suspension not functioning. Since BCM's are widely used, this is a looming major safety issue for the nation because GM quit making new ones, no one else makes these parts, no one can repair the units. I know a number of C6 Corvette owners are using used parts which deactivates the air bags and the security system.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I started smelling gas from my car two weeks ago. I discovered on Corvette Forum.com that this is a common problem. If the car is filled up over 1/2 tank gas will come out of the top and drip on the exhaust, which is very concerning. Chevrolet claims that the cars with this issue were recalled, but mine was not. This is one of two reoccurring issues with the C6 Corvette, and unfortunately, I am a victim of both. The other is the shifter locks in place, and the car will not come out of park. Chevrolet does not own up to the responsibility for this defective engineering as well. Please add me to the complaints for these two recallable issues as Chevrollet refuses to address the issue. Fuel dripping on the exhaust preplexes me why NHTSA has not got involved already.
