Recalls on the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Airbag

Issue: Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Note: For the 2010 and 2013 models listed, this recall only affects vehicles that were imported into Canada, and were originally sold or ever registered in certain areas of the United States that experience high or moderate levels of heat and humidity. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Action: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger-front airbag. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

This Safety Improvement Program was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2020-591. General Motors Canada is conducting a voluntary Safety Improvement Program involving passenger airbag inflators in vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in certain areas of the United States that experience high or moderate levels of heat and humidity, and that were subsequently imported into Canada. Dealers will replace the passenger inflator on affected vehicles. Owners who believe their vehicles may have been originally purchased or registered in the states listed below should contact a General Motors dealer. On certain vehicles, the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) may corrode due to a significant quantity of snow and/or water containing road salt or other contaminants entering the vehicle and saturating the acoustical padding beneath the floor carpet. If sufficient moisture collects and is retained in the padding, it may cause excessive corrosion under the module; compromising the module seal and allowing water intrusion and system malfunction. This may result in illumination of the Airbag Readiness light along with a "Service Airbag" message on the Driver Information Center and, in certain instances, may cause inadvertent deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner and/or airbags. Inadvertent airbag and/or pretensioner deployment could result in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will remove the acoustical pad above the SDM, inspect, and if necessary, replace the SDM. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2009-291

*** This notice is provided for information purposes only as the subject equipment is not regulated under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act *** A safety defect may exist in aftermarket ACDelco brake shoes manufactured between April 1st 2013 to April 19 2014, sold and/or installed as service replacement parts. The lining of the rear brake shoe may detach from the steel shoe during normal service, causing the affected brake to fail. If the lining detaches from the steel shoe, it could cause rear-wheel lockup and it will reduce the available braking force which could lengthen the required stopping distance, and increase the risk of a crash without prior warning. Correction: GM Dealers, ACDelco warehouse distributors and their professional installer customers are to inspect the manufacture date of the rear brake shoes and, if necessary, replace the shoes. Customers of the 125 vehicles that were serviced by GM Dealers with the suspect parts will be notified by first class letter.

On certain vehicles equipped with an optional dual batteries, the owner's manual does not specify a maximum amperage rating for the auxiliary battery to the trailer wiring harness. If the circuit is overloaded, a fusible link may fail and could damage adjacent components, potentially resulting in a fire and increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will install an 40 amp inline fuse and provide an owner's manual supplement containing maximum amp rating information. Note: Owners are advised not to use equipment that exceeds a 40 amp draw on the auxiliary battery trailer wiring.

On certain vehicles equipped with a Heated Washer Fluid System (HWFS), a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the washer fluid heater may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. A repair was implemented in a recall in 2008, however, there have been new reports of thermal incidents on heated washer fluid system modules after this improvement was installed. This situation may cause some minor distortion, but also could lead to melting of the plastic around the heated washer fluid system, or cause a fire. Correction: Dealers will permanently disable and remove the heated washer fluid module. An updated page will be provided and inserted in the Owner Manual to document the removal of the feature.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

FUEL LEAKING/SPRAYING OUT OF THE REAR AUXILIARY FUEL TANK. I NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF RAW GASOLINE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I OBSERVED THE RAW FUEL WAS COMING OUT OF THE FUEL MODULE CONNECTING FUEL LINE. THE METAL FUEL LINE SITS IN A WELL OF THE REAR TANK AND WAS COMPLETELY COVERED WITH DIRT/MOISTURE/RAW FUEL. THE TANK WAS REMOVED AND WE IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THE METAL PORTION OF THE FUEL MODULE METAL PIPING WAS RUSTED THRU AND THAT WAS WHERE THE RAW FUEL WAS BEING SPRAYED/POOLING IN THE WELL AREA. THE DESIGN OF THE FUEL TANK & MODULE CREATES A PERFECT LOCATION FOR DIRT/MOISTURE TO ACCUMULATE. ANY TYPE OF IGNITION SOURCE COULD HAVE CAUSED A CATASTROPHIC FIRE AND POSSIBLE EXPLOSION. THE REMOVED ORIGINAL FUEL MODULE WAS IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION EXCEPT FOR THE ROTTED METAL PORTION OF THE MODULE. I REPLACED THE ROTTED FUEL MODULE WITH A NEW GM OEM FUEL MODULE. THIS NEW MODULE HAS THE SAME EXACT CONSTRUCTION AS THE ORIGINAL PART. SINCE THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO CLEAN OR KEEP CLEAN THE WELL AREA OF THE TANK, I CAN ONLY ASSUME THE NEW OEM PART WILL DETERIORATE IN THE SAME MANNER. THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 34000 MILES ON IT WHEN THE CONDITION OCCURRED. SINCE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY THE NEW MODULE COSTS FOR LABOR AND PARTS WAS IN EXCESS OF $1000.00. IN CONCLUSION I THINK THIS MATTER SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER BECAUSE IT IS OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY HAZARD INVOLVING RAW FUEL BEING EJECTED FROM THE FUEL TANK UNDER PRESSURE WHILE THE PUMP IS RUNNING.

ENGINE

WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 SILVERADO AT 33,000 MILES I NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND IT WAS RUNNING ROUGH. AFTER TAKING TO THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS DETERMINED THE #7 CYLINDER WAS NOT WORKING. ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC THE AFM FOR THE 5.3 LITER ENGINES HAS AN OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. HALF OF THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF CARBON BUILT UP INSIDE THE ENGINE. AGAIN AT 78,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 2 WEEKS TO AND DETERMINED THE ENGINE HAD EXCESSIVE CARBON BUILD UP AND A ENGINE SOAK WAS PERFORMED ALONG WITH SPLASH GUARDS ADDED TO THE VALVE COVERS TO KEEP THE ENGINE OIL FROM ESCAPING AS THE AFM WAS OPEARTIONAL. AT 98,000 MILES THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR AND THE VALVE COVER GASKET HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW, AT 140,000 MILES THE WATER PUMP, CRANK SHAFT AND BEARINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP SAID I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT REBUILD THE ENGINE DUE TO THE MILEAGE. I HAVE CHANGED THE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES AND STARTED USING FULL SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL SINCE MY ENGINE ISSUES AT 33,000 MILES. GM IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE WITH THE AFM AND CONTINUES TO DO NOTHING. I CONTACT GM CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY STATED THAT MY TRUCK HASN'T BEEN SEEN AT A DEALERSHIP IN OVER A YEAR, THEY WILL NOT ASSIST IN THE COST OF REPLACING THE ENGINE. BUT, THEY WILL GIVE ME A $1,000 CREDIT TOWARDS A NEW VEHILCE. INSTEAD OF FIXING THE PROBLEM, GM JUST TURNS THERE HEADS ON THE ENGINE PROBLEMS AND EXPECTS YOU TO PAY FOR A NEW GM VEHICLE. I GOT THIS TRUCK USED AT 94K MILES ON IT. IT WAS STILL IN STANDARD WARRANTY. I GOT THE OIL CHANGED STARTED GETTING THAT CLICKING/KNOCKING NOISE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP THAT DID THE OIL CHANGED. THEY LOOKED INTO AND TOLD ME IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH CHEVY ENGINES IS THE VALVE LIFTERS BREAK AND NEEDS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE CAMS. ENGINE

THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE DASH READOUT GAVE A LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID IT WAS A BAD OIL PRESSURE SENSOR AND REPLACED IT AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $450.00. FIVE MONTHS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY TOWING A HORSE TRAILER. I AGAIN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED INTO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THE OIL WAS LOW AND DID AN OIL CHANGE. THE WARNING LIGHT WAS OFF WHEN WE GOT THE TRUCK BACK. THE LATEST INCIDENT HAPPENED ON 4/18/2015. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE WHERE THEY READ THE FAULT CODE. THE CODE IS P0521 - OIL PRESSURE SENSOR OR OIL LOW. I CHECKED THE OIL IT WAS NEARLY FULL BUT I ADDED A LITTLE ANYWAY. THE LIGHT STAYED ON. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE DEALER. THE LIGHT WENT OFF THE DAY BEFORE OUR APPOINTMENT. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THE TRUCK PROBABLY NEEDS AN OIL PUMP AND A VALVE COVER AND IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $1075.00 TO FIX. I HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OWNER COMPLAINTS ON VARIOUS WEBSITES DOCUMENTING THE SAME PROBLEM I AM HAVING. THERE APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE OIL SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES. MY TRUCK JUST WENT OUT OF WARRANTY IN DECEMBER 2014. THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR REPAIRS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SERIOUS PRODUCT DEFECT AND GM SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL.
