In July 2026, the rear power liftgate on my Toyota RAV4 suddenly stopped operating properly and would not close. I was unable to push the hatch down normally and then noticed that one of the hinges appeared bent and the liftgate was misaligned. Because I needed to close the vehicle, I tried to lower the hatch very slowly, moving it down only a small amount at a time so I would not put additional pressure on the damaged hinge. While I was doing this, the hatch suddenly sprang back upward and struck me in the shoulder. It took approximately 15 minutes of carefully working with the hatch before I was finally able to get it closed. One hinge was replaced for $400, but after the liftgate was opened only about three times, the hinge became bent again and the hatch was once again visibly misaligned. I have since received an estimate of approximately $3,000 because I was told that multiple components may need to be replaced. At this point I am not opening the liftgate for fear that the broken parts will become worse. The problem has not been successfully repaired and no one has been able to explain why the replacement hinge failed almost immediately. I am concerned that the liftgate may unexpectedly move, fail to close or latch properly, or strike someone while they are attempting to operate it. This appears to be a recurring failure rather than normal wear and tear.

This vehicle has twice had the same issue where the sunroof drain lines become clogged or dislocated and the water fills the liner in the front driver and passenger seats resulting in flooding in the compartment and mold damage throughout the interior. the mole spore are transmitted throughout the interior. The water damaged the airbags and the electrical harness in the dash of the car resulting in the dashboard electrical system shutting off and restarting spontaneously while driving. The leaks were repairs and the interior replaces in october 2023 and the same incident has recurred in august 2026. The claims adjuster recommends that the entire wiring harness, airbags, and carpets, seats and liners be replaced for health and safety of passengers.

Request for Investigation – 2014 Toyota RAV4 Airbag Non-Deployment On [XXX], at approximately [XXX]., the vehicle was involved in a traffic collision in Lakeland, Florida. The vehicle sustained a significant impact to the driver’s-side front area. Despite the nature and location of the collision, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags did not deploy. Law enforcement responded to the scene and completed Police Report. Emergency medical services also responded, and the driver was transported from the scene by ambulance due to injuries sustained in the collision. The primary concern is whether the airbag system, including the crash sensors and SRS components, functioned as designed during this crash. Based on the impact, I am seeking an investigation into whether the non-deployment of the airbags was the result of a defect or malfunction. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this incident, document it within its vehicle safety database, and determine whether similar complaints involving 2014 Toyota RAV4 vehicles exist that may indicate a broader safety concern warranting further investigation. Supporting documentation, including photographs of the vehicle damage, the police report, and any other relevant records, can be provided upon request. My 2022 Toyota RAV4 has experienced failures of the power door lock actuators on both front doors. Neither the driver's side nor the front passenger door consistently locks or unlocks using the key fob, interior power lock switch, or automatic locking system. This creates a significant safety concern because the doors may remain unlocked when the vehicle is parked, creating a security risk, or they may fail to unlock quickly during an emergency. In addition, occupants may believe the doors are secured when they are not. The problem has occurred on both front doors, indicating this is not an isolated component failure. The issue developed under normal use and was not caused by an accident, abuse, or modification to the vehicle. Multiple Toyota owners have reported similar failures involving door lock actuators in the same generation of vehicles, and there is pending litigation alleging Toyota has long been aware of this defect but has not issued a recall. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this defect presents a safety risk and warrants investigation by NHTSA

The liftgate on my 2017 Toyota RAV4 has been having issues for a couple of months. Makes a horrific noise when opening and closing. On several occasions it won't even open but about 5 inches then stops. The driver's side door won't lock/unlock with the smart key fob. I have to manually lock it and then use the "key" in the fob to unlock it. It is very hard to turn the key and I am always afraid it is going to break off in the lock. I feel this is dangerous for me that the time it takes to do this, something could happen to me. I have checked a couple of places for repair of the lock and it can run between $600 and $800 per lock.

My 2012 Toyota RAV4 (Super White / Blizzard Pearl paint) is experiencing severe and recurring paint peeling caused by a known manufacturing defect in which the factory paint primer failed to properly adhere to the base metal layer. The peeling first began in 2023 following freezing weather in Austin, TX. It occurred again in 2024 after another freeze event, and then once more in 2025, at which point a large section of roof paint peeled off completely, exposing bare metal. I attempted to repair the damage with spray paint but the new paint continues to peel off as well, because the underlying adhesion defect was never corrected. This confirms the failure is rooted in the original factory primer, not in external damage or neglect. This poses a direct safety hazard to other drivers and pedestrians when paint debris becomes airborne at highway speeds, and the exposed bare metal is now vulnerable to rust and further structural deterioration. Toyota formally acknowledged this defect and created Customer Support Program ZKG to address it across nearly 1.74 million vehicles, including the RAV4. In July 2022, Toyota confirmed in writing that 'sunlight/ultraviolet exposure over time degrades the adhesion between the factory-applied paint primer coat layer and the base metal electrodeposition layer, causing paint to peel from the metal body panel.' Freeze-thaw cycles accelerate this exact failure mode by forcing moisture under already-weakened paint edges, causing rapid and widespread delamination — consistent with what I experienced after the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Austin winter weather events. I was not properly notified about Program ZKG and missed the coverage window as a result. Toyota has declined to provide goodwill assistance. Given that Toyota knowingly sold vehicles with a defective paint system, failed to adequately notify all affected owners, and that the ongoing peeling creates an active road safety hazard with bare metal now exposed on the roof, please investigate.

Severe, chronic rainwater intrusion through the vehicle's front cowl and body seams, resulting in catastrophic flooding of the passenger-side cabin floorboards. This issue occurs even when all sunroof drains are completely clear and functional. Toyota has issued Technical Service Bulletin 0055-24 acknowledging body seam and cowl leaks for this vehicle type. The passenger-side floorboard houses critical electrical wire harnesses and sits adjacent to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS/Airbag) control module. Chronic standing water on the floorboard presents an immediate risk of electrical short-circuits, potentially causing sudden vehicle stalling, electrical component fires, or the uncommanded deployment/failure of the vehicle's airbag safety systems. Furthermore, the thick foam insulation beneath the carpet remains saturated, creating an immediate, toxic mold hazard within an enclosed passenger cabin, severely impacting occupant health and air quality. The manufacturer and dealership have left the vehicle unrepaired for over 30 days, refusing to remediate this safety hazard.

Hinges on the trunk wore out abnormally fast causing the struts to fail and trunk to misalign causing further lift gate damage. Caused a roughly one inch gap in the trunk there light was visible and wind can be felt through. If not addressed the hinge will rip off and the trunk will go with it.

Vehicle: 2016 Toyota RAV4 Color: Factory Super White / Blizzard Pearl (whichever applies) I am filing a complaint regarding a well-known latent manufacturing defect involving peeling factory paint on my 2016 Toyota RAV4. The original factory-applied white paint is peeling and delaminating from the exterior metal body panels under normal use and maintenance conditions. The paint failure appears unrelated to any accident, impact, misuse, neglect, or environmental damage. The failed component is the factory-applied exterior paint and coating system on the vehicle’s metal body panels. The affected areas are available for inspection upon request. The paint is separating from the primer/base layer and peeling off in sheets, exposing underlying surfaces and creating risk of corrosion and reduced vehicle value. Toyota has publicly acknowledged widespread issues involving “Super White (040)” and “Blizzard Pearl (070)” paint on numerous Toyota models, including RAV4 vehicles, through Customer Support Program ZKG and multiple Technical Service Bulletins. Toyota documents specifically state the issue involves paint adhesion failure during the manufacturing process causing peeling on exterior metal body panels. This issue creates safety concerns because exposed metal surfaces may eventually corrode or rust, reducing long-term structural integrity and potentially creating visibility distractions while driving as paint continues to separate and peel unexpectedly. Large peeling sections can also detach while driving and create roadway debris hazards for other motorists. Purchased less than 2 months ago from Performance Mitsubishi in Delray Beach FL. Lift gate was not opening and closing properly. Yesterday the hinges broke and lift gate won't shut. It appears there is a class action lawsuit for this issue. I am now responsible for fixing this because the dealership won't.

The rear door (lift gate) hinges are failing and tearing away from the vehicle body, causing misalignment of the rear door, operational failure of the automated lift gate, and water leaking into the interior. This has occurred under normal use conditions. It appears that the hinge design is insufficient to handle the load and forces of normal operation of the door. The failure has been documented in pictures. The Toyota dealership where the vehicle was purchased stated that the vehicle is out of warranty and there is no recall for the hinges, therefore the owner is responsible for repair costs. Had the issue not been found and the hinges failed completely, it could have been extremely hazardous.

I am having a failure of my liftgate. My liftgate hinges are cracked and pulling away. The welds are cracked and weak. The liftgate does not close properly. I fear my liftgate will fall off and this could cause safety concerns for other vehicles behind me as well as potential harm to passengers in the back seat. I have a call into the dealer where my 2020 RAV4 Adventure was purchased but have not heard back from them yet.

My vehicle is a 2012 rav 4 sport, color Barcelona Red. Said color and model has been know to have clear coat and paint issues. My vehicles clear coat and paint in the top has been peeling at an alarming rate, a year or so ago it started, but the last 6 months have been excrutiating. This problem poses a risk to me as if the issue continues on, oxidation might occur and possibly lead to holes in the surface. To other paint flying off from the vehicle might distract them in the porcess of driving and the glare produces by it might impact others vision. Other areas that have been affected include, hood and side mirrors.
