I am reporting a chronic manufacturing defect on my 2020 BMW X3 that poses an immediate electrical short-circuit and vehicle safety hazard. The passenger-side panoramic sunroof drainage system/roof structure leaks water heavily through the side panel joint of the door frame, directly saturating the front passenger floor carpet. This issue has been ongoing since I received the vehicle in 2020.The vehicle has been brought to Kelly BMW of Columbus, Ohio, at least four separate times since 2020 specifically to address this leak. Technicians have replaced outer seals and cleared tracks, but the leak persists, and on the last visit, unqualified dealership staff claimed they "could not find anything wrong. "This is a severe safety risk: BMW places the primary electronic fuse blocks and vital vehicle wiring harnesses directly underneath the front passenger floorboard carpet. Constant water logging in this exact area threatens to cause sudden, catastrophic electrical failures, component shorts, or vehicle stalling while driving. The manufacturer has failed to issue a recall for this known, widespread G01 platform defect, and dealership service centers lack the training to properly diagnose it.

During the second day of ownership I was driving with no vehicles in front of me and only oncoming traffic, and I heard a loud cracking sound from the windshield. It did not sound like something impacted the windshield, and I did not see any object coming toward the vehicle. Two parallel cracks immediately developed in the windshield beginning from the headliner directly in front of the driver's seat, and they spread down toward the dash approximately 4", then the cracks turned, remaining parallel, and spread horizontally toward the passenger side of the vehicle. The lower crack stopped, while the upper crack spread the following day to the rearview mirror assembly. Dealership determined it to be caused by impact, but the manner in which the crack spread and the path it took suggests improper windshield installation from the factory and improper tension on the glass, perhaps from a faulty or improperly installed windshield clip. BMW online forums suggest many customers are having identical problems with windshield tension cracking on this generation of the X3, complete with narratives and photographs.

The headlights have a shadow half way down the windshield making it very difficult to see at night. We don't feel safe driving when it is dark out. We took it to the dealer the end of January they saw what we were talking about. One of the foreman drove it home at night. He saw what we were talking about but gave no solutions. We took it in again the shop foreman adjusted the headlights up. We drove it at night. The adjustment did not help. I have been in contact with BMW of North America. They have offered no solution.

This car was purchased new from an authorized dealer. After about 3 months of operation, I noticed a crack in the windshield starting at the upper edge of the passenger side of the vehicle. The crack has since spread approx. halfway across the windshield. I'm concerned that this will continue until the windshield fails. I took it to the dealer who agreed that it didn't appear to have been struck by a rock or anything else, but the dealership has refused to take responsibility. I looked up possible recalls on this issue and discovered that BMW has recalled other similar models for this problem, but not this model. I believe that this is an issue that should result in a recall and subsequent replacement of the windshield and I wanted to make the NHTSA aware of it.

The contact owns a 2024 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the windshield unexpectedly cracked on several occasions without impact. The contact stated that the crack originated at the top of the windshield and extended approximately six inches toward the driver’s side. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not inspected. The dealer ordered replacement windshields several times. The contact stated that after the windshield was replaced, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

We purchased this vehicle new. It has less than 3,000 miles on it. A crack has developed in the windshield, starting in the upper corner on the passenger side and extending approximately 18 inches diagonally across the windshield. There is no evidence of an impact on the windshield by a rock or other road debris. It appears to be a defect in the glass itself or the method of installation. I believe that this issue is worthy of investigation by the NHTSA.

Beginning in July–August 2025, my 2019 BMW X3 (VIN [XXX] ) began experiencing multiple safety‑critical system failures affecting federally regulated components. The rearview camera intermittently failed to activate and later stopped functioning entirely, resulting in loss of rear visibility required under FMVSS 111. The Emergency Call (eCall) system displayed repeated malfunction warnings, indicating loss of automatic crash notification capability. The vehicle also displayed “Driver Assistance Restricted,” “Collision Warning Malfunction,” and pedestrian detection failure messages, showing that forward collision warning and related ADAS functions were not operating properly. During the same period, the telematics control unit (TCU) lost functionality. This caused loss of ConnectedDrive services, backend communication, remote diagnostics, remote status reporting, and safety‑related over‑the‑air updates. These failures match known BMW defect patterns involving water intrusion into the antenna/telematics module and backend provisioning issues. I submitted a detailed written escalation to BMW of North America. BMW issued two brief responses on February 11–12, 2026 that did not address any of the safety issues, did not provide the engineering basis for excluding my VIN from the applicable recall, and redirected me to a dealer, which has no authority over recall determinations. BMW closed the case without providing any investigation results, defect determination, or technical explanation, contrary to obligations under 49 CFR § 573. These failures materially impair federally regulated safety functions, including rear visibility, collision avoidance, emergency crash notification, and telematics‑based safety communication. I am reporting a serious safety issue involving my 2024 BMW X3 purchased from Countryside Mitsubishi in Countryside, Illinois, on November 7, 2025. Within hours of purchase, I discovered multiple defects that were not disclosed before the sale. The most concerning issue involves the windshield wiper system and forward sensor components, which began to malfunction immediately. The vehicle’s onboard system initially flagged a windshield sensor fault. I later discovered that the original BMW windshield had been replaced with a non-OEM part, which BMW confirmed voided the vehicle's factory warranty and disabled key safety features dependent on OEM calibration. I was never informed of the windshield replacement at time of sale. When I raised concerns with the dealership, they admitted to using a sensor “workaround” instead of a proper replacement, which BMW later explained is not compliant with their specifications and leaves the vehicle’s advanced safety systems—such as forward collision alerts—compromised. The dealership falsely stated the repair was done by BMW-certified technicians, which was later denied by the repair staff. This defect creates a major visibility and safety hazard. I experienced intermittent wiper failure during poor weather, and the washer fluid system also failed to operate reliably. OE Windshield failed with a crack from no strike or extremely small pebbles. Have had to replace windshield 2x in 3 months of ownership. Others with the same FUYAO glass have had to replace multiple times as well. Owners are starting to figure out there may be a manufacturing defect in the glass.

The windshield was replaced due to a crack from road debris. It was replaced with a Fuyoa 43R-0117043; DOT1038M544AS1. The car has head up display. The new windshield is highly reflective when driving during sunny day, and the head up display equipment is reflecting on the windshield in the middle of driver's view and very distracting. The previous windshield had a minimal reflection of head up display during daytime sun but not a driver distraction. BMW service (installed the windshield with OEM part) rep drove the car and observed the strong reflection. The service rep checked with BMW engineers who reported this is an issue they are receiving more reports about but the rep said there is nothing BMW will do in response to this safety complaint. He indicated the windshield is OEM and to specifications. There are no warning lamps or messages related to the new windshield, only this driver's observation of negative change in view while driving. The reflection does not occur when the car is in the shade.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X3. The contact stated while driving approximately 46 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the roof of the vehicle. The following day the contact discovered that the glass sunroof had exploded and there was a hole in the sunroof glass. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact stated that during the failure, the temperature was extremely cold and the heater inside the cabin of the vehicle was activated. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000.

In June 2023, I purchased a vehicle from Enterprise Car Sales. Around June 2024, I reached out to them with concerns about the vehicle. They recommended I contact either the insurance or warranty company, but neither could address my issue. I then took the vehicle to the dealership, and they agreed to inspect it. They confirmed that the windshield and rear window molding trim were aftermarket parts, which were causing streaks on the window and obstructing the driver’s view. Additionally, the brakes and tires had been replaced with non-recommended parts, though I was willing to cover the cost of replacing these two items out of pocket.

Something is wrong with the BMW OEM windshields with HUD. I have had to completely replace 3 in 5 years. In between replacements have had Safeliite try and fill pits in it. My last windshield lasted 21 days before cracking on the side at the very edge. I was driving and the road construction had very uneven lane heights so the car was higher on the passenger side. All of the sudden I heard a crack. The was not rock or debris that hit the windshield. There have been lots of complaints about the BMW windshields with HUD especially the X series SUV’s. People are saying softer glass. All I know is this is dangerous and BMW is up charging for replacement windshields if you don’t have insurance or a warranty. The cost is in the thousands for the replacement. I’ve never had a car that had such issues with the windshield being damaged so easily and or faulty glass. My last windshield replacement was 6/29/23, cracked 7/20/23

When we closed the front driver seat of the car while the car was parked, the back moonroof glass exploded, meaning the glass shattered into a ton of little pieces. Those glass pieces fell all over the back seat. There was no external cause such as something falling on the glass, etc. This happened at the same time as when we closed the front driver door. There were no seen issues with the glass prior to it breaking such as cracks or otherwise, and we had just bought the car BMW certified 2 months prior. BMW has indicated they are not taking responsibility, as they "can't rule out external forces" (although there are clearly none) and told me to reach out to my insurance for coverage. Glass falling all over the back seat is clearly a safety issue.
