Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recall 2016265 459,492 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Recall 2015228 374,508 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: This recall supersedes special service campaign 2015-003. Correction: Dealers will replace airbag inflators. All vehicles having received a replacement inflator as part of the previous special service campaign will have a replacement inflator installed.

Recall 2015093 1,000 units in Canada

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Canada is conducting a voluntary Safety Improvement Program involving Takata driver and/or passenger airbag inflators installed in certain vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in certain high humidity areas of the United States. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will replace the driver and/or passenger inflator on affected vehicles, depending on the vehicle involved. Owners who believe their vehicles may have been originally purchased or registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands should contact a Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) dealer. This action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Note: For the 2003 model year Dodge RAM, only the passenger side inflator would need replacement. Additional Note: This special service campaign was replaced by recalls 2015094 and 2015228. Recall 2007058 13,308 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, the instrument cluster circuit that controls interior lighting may overheat and cause an instrument panel fire. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the instrument cluster assembly. If the cluster shows no evidence of damage, it will be re-programmed to prevent this condition. In addition, all vehicles will receive a modification that directs interior lighting to a portion of the integrated circuit with additional current carrying capacity.

Recall 2006058 38,034 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, the front windshield wiper motor armature shaft may break which could result in a loss of front windshield wiping capability. This could impair the driver's vision and cause a crash without warning. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front windshield wiper motor.

Recall 2006037 4,595 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, an electrostatic discharge event between the operator and the vehicle can result in a loss of turn signal functionality and headlamp or windshield wiper activation or deactivation. This could impair the driver's vision and cause a crash without warning. Correction: Dealers will re-flash the cab compartment node with a software revision that will prevent all undesirable conditions if an electrostatic discharge event occurs.

Recall 2006033 6 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the driver occupant restraint system does not comply with the requirements of CMVSS 208 - Occupant Crash Protection. The manufacturer changed the driver restraint system to utilize a common driver airbag with other Dodge vehicle applications. This change required a modification to the occupant restraint control module calibration. The change was not properly coordinated and a small number of vehicles were built with the improper combination of driver airbag and airbag control module. Correction: Dealers will replace the occupant restraint control module.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Vehicle: 2006 Dodge Durango VIN: [XXX] Issue Type: Fuel System / Safety Hazard Description: During refueling, the vehicle repeatedly shuts the pump off and then sprays gasoline back out of the filler neck, creating a fire and injury hazard. This is a known defect covered under Dodge Customer Satisfaction Notification X39, which extends warranty coverage for the inlet check valve / ORVR failure on 2006–2008 Durango models. The symptoms match the documented defect exactly: pump shutoff, fuel expulsion, and fuel spray. This occurs at multiple stations and with different pumps. Stellantis customer service and local dealers have been unresponsive and will not acknowledge X39 unless forced. The defect poses a clear safety risk to me and others nearby during refueling. I am requesting NHTSA involvement to ensure Stellantis honors the X39 warranty extension and addresses this fuel system hazard. Safety Risk: Gasoline sprays out under pressure, contacting the vehicle, ground, and the person refueling. This is a fire hazard and exposes the user to fuel on skin and clothing. The condition is unpredictable and dangerous. Requested Action: Require Stellantis to inspect and repair the vehicle under CSN X39 and ensure compliance with the documented unlimited‑time warranty extension for this defect. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Fuel erupts from fuel filler neck EVERY TIME the fuel tank is filled, even when filling very slowly. A half-gallon or more of fuel ends up violently spitting out of the filler neck onto people in the vicinity, onto the side of the car, and onto the ground—every time the vehicle is refueled. Many owners apparently have the exact same issue, judging by the large number of complaints on Durango and Dodge forums. Apparently, there was a recall covering model-year 2005 Durangos for this issue, but the issue is present on our 2006 Durango. This is a clear safety defect that could easily create an extremely dangerous situation.

STEERING

design issue on rack and pinion assembly. Basically metal transfer pipes on side of assembly rust out. This is my second Durango 2006 model to have this problem. Complete loss of steering assist occurs because of loss of power fluid out of fore mentioned pipes. The pipes cannot be repaired, entire rack and assembly must be replaced. Exposure to road salt is cause of rusting as assembly is totally exposed under vehicle. Stainless steel pipes are a better way except to bean counters.

POWER TRAIN

In the winter of 2020 i had to use my 4wd lock in my durango. It never come out of 4wd lock. As a former ase technician and auto center manager I have to say dodge has a mess on their hands. 1st off its ridiculous to stop the flow of technical information to the owners of chrysler vehicles due to globalization!? I have been working on this vehicle for months as my patience allows. All testing and troubleshooting place the issue back into electrical issues within these durangos. This is a dangerous problem so many people own older dodge & chrysler products affected by this transfer case problem, recall it and get it done! Now it has to go to a chrysler dealer to have the codes cleared by a dodge scanner. Issue with that is the local dodge dealer in the village i live is not known for honesty. I took my durango there when i had issues with security system. I was told it would need a $1000. computer to start, then maybe another $1000. I took it home put a security module in it, been driving it since. Hold Chrysler accountable, do something for these thousands of people who own nice looking nice running dodge products they can't drive due to transfer case issues, and its not just one issue, there are several issues & components in that system that are troublesome!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

TIPM / PCM (Computer modules) these items are affecting most Dodge vehicles that is listed already for recalls only in 2011-2013 and one earlier. This is happening in a lot of Dodges, mine is 1D4HB48N76F[XXX] (2006 Durango 4.7 SLT). They will stop running anywhere, it shuts the fuel pump off where the vehicles no longer gets gas and you have a full tank. It is only a computerized Dealer fix. Their recall for some vehicles will fix my 2006 also by the simply relay bypass that they are installing. PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

2006 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SXT, SAFETY PROBLEMS WITH LIFT GATE WHEN OPENING WITH KEY FAUB; LIFT GATE OPENS AND IMMEDIATELY GOES DOWN (WHEN STATIONARY). IF NEEDING TO GET GROCERIES, OR ANYTHING FROM THE REAR OF VAN, NEED TO HAVE ONE PERSON HOLDING THE LIFT GATE, SO THE OTHER PERSON CAN REMOVE ITEMS FROM VAN, TO AVOID THE LIFTGATE CRASHING DOWN ON YOU (CAUSING INJURY AND INABILITY FOR VEHICLE TO FUNCTION SAFELY). ALSO, PROBLEM WITH LEFT SLIDING DOOR LOCK; DOES NOT LOCK AND UNLOCK WITH KEY FAUB; HAVE TO MANUALLY LOCK AND UNLOCK, EVEN THOUGH THE REST OF THE DOORS LOCK/UNLOCK, WITH THE KEY FAUB. COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, PUT GROCERIES IN THE LEFT SIDE OF SLIDING DOOR AND THIS DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE, ELECTRONICALLY, OR MANUALLY. HAD TO DRIVE HOME IN THE RAIN WITH THE LEFT SIDE SLIDING DOOR, WIDE OPEN. BELIEVE THE HATCH LIFT SUPPORT PART FOR RIGHT AND LEFT NEED REPLACING, HOWEVER, THE LEFT SLIDING LOCK/UNLOCK FEATURE MAY. OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. IT LEAVES A CONSUMER TO GET A QUESTIONABLE DIAGNOSIS FROM DEALERS, OR MECHANICS, WHO SEE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO NFLATE THE PROBLEM WITH INACCURATE DIAGNOSIS AND OVERINFLATED CHARGES, TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A CONSUMER.

THE 4WD SVC LIGHT WILL COME ON AT RANDOM WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. SOMETIMES IT WILL BE SHIFTING INTO 4X4 ON IT'S ON AND WHEN I MAKE A TURN, I CAN FEEL THE 4X4 WORKING WITHOUT EVER PHYSICALLY TURNING IT ON. OTHER TIMES, I CAN HEAR THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR MAKING NOISE FOR ABOUT 2 SECONDS WHEN I OPEN THE DOOR OR PRESS THE KEY FOB BUTTON. I PULLED A TROUBLE CODE OF C1404. FURTHER RESEARCH OF THIS CODE AND ISSUE RESULTS IN OVER 500 COMPLAINTS ONLINE. IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE THERE IS AN ACCIDENT.
