NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Chrysler is also recalling 2004-2008 RAM 1500, 2005-2009 RAM 2500, 2006-2009 RAM 3500, 2007-2009 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis, 2008-2009 RAM 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis, 2004-2009 Dodge Durango, 2007-2009 Chrysler Aspen, 2007-2009 Jeep Wrangler, 2008-2009 Dodge Challenger, 2005-2008 Dodge Magnum, 2005-2009 Chrysler 300, 2006-2009 Dodge Charger, 2005-2009 Dodge Dakota and 2006-2009 Mits

Risk: These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Dodge Ram 2500, 2004-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 and Durango, 2006-2009 Dodge Ram 3500, 2008-2010 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500, 2007-2008 Chrysler Aspen, 2005-2010 Chrysler 300, 300C, 300S, and SRT8, 2006-2010 Dodge Charger, 2005-2008 Magnum, 2005-2011 Dodge Dakota, and 2006-2009 Mitsubishi Raider vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

06V386000

STEERING

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE RIGHT FRONT STEERING KNUCKLE MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED. BECAUSE OF A BROKEN COOLING LINE, PARTS CAST IN TOOL CAVITY #63 ON JULY 18 AND JULY 19, 2006, MAY HAVE A COLD SHUT CONDITION AND COULD FRACTURE.

Risk: THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

06V341000

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE SOFTWARE PROGRAMMED INTO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE CAN CAUSE A MOMENTARY LOCK UP OF THE DRIVE WHEELS IF THE VEHICLE IS TRAVELING OVER 40 MPH AND THE OPERATOR SHIFTS FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO DRIVE.

Risk: IF THE DRIVE WHEELS LOCKED UP, LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL COULD OCCUR INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2016265 459,492 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Recall 2015228 374,508 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: This recall supersedes special service campaign 2015-003. Correction: Dealers will replace airbag inflators. All vehicles having received a replacement inflator as part of the previous special service campaign will have a replacement inflator installed.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Canada is conducting a voluntary Safety Improvement Program involving Takata driver and/or passenger airbag inflators installed in certain vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in certain high humidity areas of the United States. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will replace the driver and/or passenger inflator on affected vehicles, depending on the vehicle involved. Owners who believe their vehicles may have been originally purchased or registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands should contact a Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) dealer. This action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Note: For the 2003 model year Dodge RAM, only the passenger side inflator would need replacement. Additional Note: This special service campaign was replaced by recalls 2015094 and 2015228. Steering

On certain vehicles, the right front steering knuckle may have been improperly manufactured and could break. This may cause a loss of steering control and result in a crash. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the right front steering knuckle.

Recall 2006218 345 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain vehicles equipped with the 42RLE automatic transmission, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may cause a momentary lock up of the drive wheels if the vehicle is traveling over 65 kph and the operator shifts from drive to neutral and back to drive. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the PCM.

MY FAMILY WAS IN A VIOLENT CAR ACCIDENT INVOLVING OUR 2007 DODGE DURANGO. WE WERE HIT "HEAD ON " IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE BY AN SUV GOING BETWEEN 60-80 ACCORDING TO STATE POLICE. THE ENTIRE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE TRUCK WAS COMPLETELY CAVED IN BY THE IMPACT THAT INCLUDED FLYING GLASS, METAL FRAGMENTS ETC. THE AIRBAGS DID COME OUT, BUT DID NOT INFLATE AND JUST CAME DOWN LIKE A "CAPE". THEY WERE USELESS IN PREVENTING ANY BODILY INJURIES. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND INJURED HER LEFT SHOULDER, HER BACK AND UP INTO HER NECK. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE BACK DRIVER'S SIDE PASSENGER SEAT AND HURT HER HEAD PRETTY BAD. I WAS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND HURT MY KNEE, WRIST AND SHOULDER. MY SON WAS IN THE BACK PASSENGER SEAT AND HURT HIS BACK. WE WERE GOING 30 MPH IN RIGHT HAND LANE AND THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER CAR WAS SPEEDING DOWN THE MIDDLE LANE AND LOST CONTROL AFTER CLIPPING A CAR, SEVERAL BEHIND US. WITNESSES SAY HE WAS GOING 100 MPH. WE DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 07 DURANGO FOR AIRBAGS, AND THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FATAL CRASH.

THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND MY LIFETIME WARRANTY WAS VOIDED BECAUSE THEY SAID I TOOK IT IN TOO EARLY TO HAVE IT CHECKED. NO ONE CALLED OR LET ME KNOW I NEEDED TO HAVE IT INSPECTED BUT THEY CAN CALL ME EVERY SINGLE DAY TO TELL ME THERE IS AN AIRBAG RECALL. IT ISN'T MPORTANT WHEN YOU CAN'T DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS TOO DANGEROUS.

MY 2007 DODGE DURANGO LIMITED HAS BEEN HAVING AN ISSUE WHERE THE 4X4 KEEPS TURNING ITSELF ON WITHOUT ME ACTUALLY ENGAGING IT. IVE BEEN HAVING A VERY HUGE WITH SOLVING THE ISSUE BUT I WAS ABLE TO READ A FORUM WHICH STATED THAT I SHOULD FILL OUT THIS FORM. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED, IN MOTION, OR WHEN I HIT THE UNLOCK BUTTON ON THE KEY PAD.

VEHICLE IS SWITCHING INTO 4WD LOW WHILE IN MOTION. I HAVE ALSO HEARD THE ACTUATOR ACTIVATING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS NOT RUNNING AND WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE BASED ON RESEARCH THAT APPEARS TO BE HAPPENING IN MULTIPLE VEHICLES FOR DODGE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE SYSTEM COULD CHANGE INTO 4WD OR 4WD LOCK AT A HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAUSING DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS.

FUEL IS SPRAYED ON THE VEHICLE, FLOOR, PERSON'S UPPER AND LOWER BODY WHILE REFUELING. THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF, IN PARK, AT THE GAS STATION. THE FUEL SPRAY OCCURS EVERY TIME THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED NEAR FULL. FOLLOWED WITH A STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE THE CABIN THAT LASTS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. THE PROBLEM STARTED AROUND 2010
