involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 45
26% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
How 2020 compares with every other Ford Expedition
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA investigations into the 2020 Ford Expedition
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 2020 Ford Expedition
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 202631133,012 units in Canada
Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, a problem in the transmission could cause the parking pawl to become damaged. As a result, when the transmission is shifted to Park, the vehicle could move if the parking brake is not applied. Safety Risk: A parked vehicle that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, Ford recommends that you should always use the parking brake when you park until the recall repairs are completed. Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the powertrain control module (PCM) software. The dealer will also inspect and, if necessary, replace any damaged transmission components.
Recall 202627916,208 units in Canada
Other
Issue: On certain vehicles, the chrome plating on the center console could bubble and peel. If this happens, sharp edges can be created. Safety Risk: Exposed sharp edges can increase the risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the center console.
Recall 202625713,760 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the driver and/or front passenger seatbelt pretensioner(s). As a result, the airbag warning light could turn on, and the seatbelt pretensioners could deploy without a crash. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall nos. 2024-084 and 2025-164. Vehicles that were repaired under those recalls also require this inspection or repair. Safety Risk: Seat belt pretensioners that don't work properly could create an increased risk of injury. Additionally, seat belt pretensioners that deploy without a crash could startle the driver and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the driver and front passenger seatbelt retractors.
Recall 202536016,575 units in Canada
Visual System
Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image not to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the vehicle is reversing. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the SYNC software.
Recall 20252858 units in Canada
Other
Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the recall repairs completed by a Ford dealer during recall 20S20 (Transport Canada recall no. 2020-202) may not have been done correctly. As a result, a second repair is required. On certain vehicles, the pre-collision assist system was not programmed correctly. As a result, the forward collision warning, dynamic brake support, and automatic emergency braking features will not work. Note: This recall only affects vehicles with Ford Co-Pilot360, not those with the optional Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist technology. Safety Risk: If the pre-collision assist system doesn't work properly, it may not detect a frontal crash or reduce its severity. This could create an increased risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the vehicle software.
Recall 20251643,261 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
This recall was replaced by Transport Canada recall no. 2026-257. Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the driver and/or front passenger seatbelt pretensioner(s). As a result, the airbag warning light could turn on, and the seatbelt pretensioners could deploy without a crash. Note: This recall is an expansion Transport Canada recall no. 2024-084. Certain vehicles repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: Seat belt pretensioners that don't work properly could create an increased risk of injury. Additionally, seat belt pretensioners that deploy without a crash could startle the driver and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the driver and front passenger seatbelt retractors.
Recall 202334132,328 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
Issue: On certain vehicles, the owner's manual doesn't include instructions for how to remove or adjust the head restraint for the centre seating positions. Canadian regulations require this information be included in the owner's manual. Safety Risk: Missing instructions for how to remove or adjust head restraints could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and provide you with an owner's manual insert with instructions for how to remove and adjust the centre seat head restraints.
Recall 20222574,747 units in Canada
Electrical
Issue: Certain vehicles could catch fire in the engine compartment, even while parked with the ignition off. The exact cause of the fire risk is under investigation. Safety Risk: The vehicle could catch fire, even while parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.

SEAT BELTS
While driving on a public road, the recalled driver's side seatbelt pretensioner (Recall 26S34) spontaneously exploded without a crash. The seatbelt violently locked on my body, causing friction burns and bruising to my skin while the explosion caused hearing loss in my left ear. The vehicle is now un-driveable as the seatbelt no longer works and has been towed to a Ford dealership. The dealership has obtained possession of the vehicle stating it is not safe or legal to drive. We have contacted both the dealership and corporate ford for assistance with alternate transportation and have not been provided with any thus far. We have called 10 different times and visited the dealership in person twice & still no help. Since the incident, I experience high anxiety and stress whenever I am inside a motor vehicle. To add to this, the loss of my vehicle has caused severe logistical distress, disrupting my daily routine, which compounds my daily anxiety. It has been 10 days without any answers, only to be told if we don’t hear anything by mid August to call back and then we can escalate. This is unacceptable.

Around October/November of 2025 I reached into my center console to grab something only to be sliced open by something sharp. I was driving so I couldn’t immediately investigate- but I had to pull over and deal with the blood gushing from my finger. I thought for sure my husband had left a razor blade or something in there. Upon inspection I couldn’t find anything logical that would have cut me so I was very confused. Then within a month or two I noticed a piece of the chrome bubbled up and went to check it and realized that was what was sharp and had sliced me open.

I was driving home from vacation on I-77 in Virginia, and felt large jolt and heard several clicking type noises. Two separate service engine lights immediately came on the dashboard, and I was able to safely pull over. I had my vehicle towed to a nearby dealership to be looked at by a mechanic. The mechanic indicated the existence of safety recall notice 26S48/(NHTSA 26V402). I spoke with the mechanic who removed the diagnostics lights on the dashboard as prescribed by Ford, and attempted to see if they would be triggered again by driving the vehicle around. I described what had happened and the mechanic immediately said the description of this safety recall seems to be the culprit as to what was experienced. The parking pawl engaged while I was on I-77 traveling 70mph, causing the transmission to inadvertently shift into park causing the jolt and sounds I described. I contacted the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and Ford manufacturer directly regarding this recall, and was told as there is no remedy available. I have several concerns as the remedy is not expected until 5/31/2027 which is way too long of a period to have to wait when my vehicle has clearly been diagnosed with this recall issue, as shifting into park while driving presents a MAJOR safety risk that puts lives in danger. Furthermore, the parking pawl can cause significant damage to the vehicle's transmission and may make me liable for significant repair costs that 100% could be avoided by Ford providing a remedy in a reasonable amount of time. I need my vehicle to either be repaired, repurchased, or provided a loaner car by the dealership while I await this remedy to avoid this situation from happening and resulting in me having to pay for a new transmission or worse potentially causing an accident. This vehicle was inspected by the state of Pennsylvania in 2026.

Car is equipped with power running boards. Set to come down when the doors are opened on that side, and return up and tucked under when doors on that side are closed. Lately they have been glitching and stuck down, stuck up, or, the most dangerous - go back up under car when door is opened and stepping on to them - children's feet have almost been crushed in them tucking under the car. I have tried overriding the system in the car to make them either stay out or stay in regardless of when the door is opened or closed but it resets when powered off and you can only reselect it when in park the next time. If the power running boards fail to pull up and tuck under the car when the door is closed, you can hear the system trying to lift it over and over while driving. There is no warning when it malfunctions, you have to open the door and just wait a moment to let it decide what to do. Unable to replicate it at a repair shop. System had been reset for a safety recall and then another visit resulted in a drained battery. Both of those temporarily fixed the issue for a few days but then it goes back to the above.

We recently purchased a certified pre-owned 2020 Ford Expedition Max Limited with approximately 70,000 miles. Since purchasing the vehicle, it has experienced several issues, particularly with the transmission. Before the transmission was replaced, the dealer attempted to repair it twice but was unable to resolve the problem. After the replacement transmission was installed, the same symptoms returned within one to two weeks, including harsh shifting, shuddering, and harsh engagement when shifting into reverse and park. In addition, the front seat belts and the captain’s chair seat belts have locked up multiple times. I also received a recall notice for the replacement transmission that was installed about a month ago, with an estimated repair timeframe of the second quarter of 2027. There is currently no repair available for the seat belt issue either. There have been no warning lights or messages displayed for any of these problems. I am concerned that these ongoing issues put both my safety and my child’s safety and the public at risk while operating or riding in this vehicle.

2020 Ford Expedition MAX. Ford issued Safety Recall 26S48 / NHTSA 26V402 confirming a transmission park pawl defect causing potential rollaway and crash risk. Remedy not available until Q2 2027. Vehicle has experienced the exact defect symptoms since at least November 2025 including stuck-in-park diagnostic codes and shifting anomalies. Prior to November 2025 the transmission failed to execute a commanded shift at approximately 65mph while passing another vehicle on an expressway causing sudden unexpected deceleration with family members present — a near-miss consistent with the park pawl defect Ford now confirms. An authorized Ford dealer visit in June 2026 for computer reprogramming included verbal acknowledgment of transmission concerns but no documentation on the repair order. Eight days later Ford issued Recall 26S48. Separately this vehicle has generated over 1,400 Restraints Indicator Lamp Warnings logged in Ford’s own connected vehicle app since at least April 2023. Restraints warnings began within 30 days of purchase at under 400 miles. Ford issued Recall 26S34 / NHTSA 26V344 for Front Seatbelt Retractor inspection on this vehicle. On multiple dealer visits spanning 2021 to 2026 service advisers verbally acknowledged the restraints warning but documented no concern and performed no diagnostic action on repair orders. Ford’s telematics platform received all warnings in real time with no proactive owner notification. Remedy not available for either recall.
NHTSA complaint #11751145 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
