A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
POWER TRAIN
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. The power transfer unit (PTU) may fail.
Risk: A failed PTU may result in a loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, the power transfer unit (PTU) could become damaged and fail. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels and/or the vehicle could move when it's parked and the parking brake isn't applied. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a two-speed PTU. Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels or a parked vehicle that moves suddenly could create the risk of an injury and/or a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners in writing. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.
Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, the input shaft snap ring in the power transfer unit (PTU) may not have been installed properly. As a result, the PTU could become damaged and fail. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the drivetrain control module and install a diagnostic software that will monitor the PTU and warn you if it detects a problem. If you see this warning, you should contact a dealership to arrange for the replacement of the PTU.
Label
Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.
Visual System
Issue: On certain vehicles, the rearview camera image may be displayed even after the transmission is shifted out of reverse. This could cause a possible distraction for the driver. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to turn off within 10 seconds after shifting from reverse gear. Safety Risk: A driver that is distracted could have an increased risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the radio software.
Steering
Issue: Certain vehicles may have been built with a gear in the steering rack that was not properly hardened. As a result, the gear could break and cause a loss of steering. Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the steering gear.
Airbag
Issue: On certain vehicles, a problem with the airbag sensors could cause the airbag system not to properly detect certain types of crashes. This problem could result in the airbags not deploying properly in a crash. Note: This problem would cause the airbag warning light to stay on in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: Airbags that do not deploy properly in a crash could increase the risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the affected sensors. If your airbag warning light stays on, you should contact a local dealership and have your vehicle serviced immediately.
Seats And Restraints
Issue: On certain vehicles, the front-passenger seat mounts may not have been properly tightened. Safety Risk: A seat that moves in a crash could result in an increased risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect and, as necessary, tighten the front-passenger seat mounting fasteners.
Engine
On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.4 L engine, a problem with the transmission controller programming may cause the engine to stall while driving. This could result in a loss of motive power and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update the transmission controller with a new calibration.

Tuesday 11/11 my 2019 Jeep Cherokee was involved in an accident due to the PTU not working properly. In PA we had very poor road conditions due to snow throughout the night into the morning. When making a turn my car slid and hit a curb damaging the front right side of my vehicle. I do believe the safety of myself and others had been put at risk. while no one else was involved in the accident just me it could have been worse if it weren’t so early in the morning and little traffic on the roads. I had my vehicle in the Scranton Dodge and Jeep dealership about a month prior to inspect the issue and they were unable to fix it due to the part being on back order and my cars VIN not being specified on the recall for this issue. I was also told that my vehicle was safe to continue driving in the meantime which is not the case. I have had the vehicle inspected by a dealership and my insurance company was involved for the damages produced by the accident. The warning message has been on but no one has the part to do anything about it and like previously stated was told the vehicle was fine to drive. I had this issue inspected in the beginning of october. I have also contacted Jeep and they told me there is nothing they can do for me since my VIN is not specified. I bought this car to get safely to and from places during the winter months in PA and that clearly is not the case now. It is very frustrating being a full time student and paying on a car that does not do the job that it’s supposed to do when I bought it and now I am thousands into a vehicle for parts that is more than the actual value of the car itself.

While driving my 2019 Jeep Cherokee, the vehicle's start/stop system malfunctioned and caused the engine to completely shut off at a traffic light. I had my hazard lights on, and while stopped safely another driver rear ended my vehicle. The Jeep has had repeated issues with stalling and engine shut-off since I purchased it. This is a serious safety concern and could have caused greater injury. I brought my vehicle to the dealership 3 times for the same issues once back in 01/25/2023, when the vehicle was still under warranty a part was ordered and replaced, but the same issues kept recurring. When I brought the vehicle back in in 2024 I was told because my warranty had expired I would have to pay out of pocket to repair the issue.

I am submitting this complaint regarding my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited with approximately 89,000 miles. On two separate occasions, while driving at approximately 20 miles per hour and before I had applied the brakes, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled without warning. These incidents both occurred during the second or third week after I purchased the vehicle in February. A dashboard message instructed me to put the vehicle in park and restart it. The sudden loss of power while the vehicle was in motion created a serious safety hazard. Both a Jeep dealership and an independent mechanic diagnosed a failed power transfer unit requiring replacement. Although my VIN is not currently covered by a recall, I am concerned this may represent a safety-related defect. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this complaint, investigate whether similar incidents are occurring, and determine whether further action is warranted.

Service 4WD warning light came on in May and comes on every time the vehicle is driven, almost immediately. My vehicle's VIN is not included in the current recall campaign for the Jeep PTU even though the exact same issue is occurring and has been diagnoses by the dealership as the same issue for the Jeep recall that is affecting 2019-2023 Jeeps Cherokees. This is a safety issue which could cause sudden loss of power or allow the Jeep to roll away in park. I contacted Jeep who provided a case number (97672488) and referred us to the dealership to be diagnosed. The dealership has diagnosed the issue to be the same as the recall; however, when submitted to Jeep for a Goodwill repair (06943), Jeep will only cover 30% of the cost to repair. I disagree with the response from Jeep and feel this safety issue recall should include my VIN and be repaired properly at no cost to myself.

Out of the blue my service 4 wheel drive indicator came up and I have been having power issues ever since. Everything points to my car should be u see this recall but it is not. While driving my car stalled at 2 different times only weeks after purchasing this used car. I took it back only for them to replace the battery with an aftermarket battery then having to get it replaced again at another location; following a parasitic draw, the PTU was noted as requiring replacement. Power tranfer unit failed and needs to be replaced. Dealer confirmed. Service 4wd light came on prior to taking it in for service. PTU failures can cause sudden loss of propulsion, drivetrain binding, hesitation, or rollaway while parked, all of which can lead to accidents and damage. This is a known and common occurrence in 2017-2023 Jeep vehicles and somehow it still takes forever for them to get replacement parts. On May 10, 2026, my SVC 4WD light came on, then went away after a few minutes. A few weeks later, my vehicle started making a loud roaring, growling, and humming noise, then it went away followed by the SVC 4WD light came back on. While driving around 50–60 MPH, the vehicle became very unstable. It suddenly pulled from left to right before I was able to regain control. Thankfully, traffic was light and the weather was clear, or it could have been much worse. A couple repair shops scanned the vehicle and found this trouble code: DTC C14A7-97 – PTU motor: component/system operation obstructed or blocked. Although my vehicle is equipped with the single-speed PTU and is not included in recalls 25V-011 and 26V-290, it experienced similar warning signs and loss of vehicle control associated with the PTU. Subject: Safety Complaint – Jeep Cherokee PTU Failure Not Included in Recall 40D (NHTSA 26V-290) I am submitting this complaint regarding a safety issue with my 2019 Jeep Cherokee (3.2L V6, ~86,000 miles). My vehicle is experiencing symptoms that closely match those described in Recall 40D (NHTSA 26V-290) and 01c (NHTSA 25V-011), however my VIN is not included in the recall. During low-speed turns, the vehicle behaves as if the four-wheel-drive system is locked. The drivetrain binds and the vehicle jerks, hops, or “skips” through turns. This affects control and creates safety concerns, especially in traffic and parking situations. An independent third-party mechanic has inspected the vehicle and diagnosed a failure of the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). This aligns directly with the defect described in Recall 40D. Symptoms include: Drivetrain binding during turns Jerking/hopping when cornering Sensation of locked differential or 4WD system Abnormal driveline behavior consistent with PTU failure These conditions indicate a drivetrain malfunction that could worsen and potentially lead to loss of motive power or unintended vehicle movement, both identified risks in the recall. Given the clear similarity to Recall 40D, I am concerned that additional vehicles outside the current VIN range are affected. I respectfully request that NHTSA: Investigate expanding the recall population Determine whether the PTU defect is more widespread Require remedies for affected vehicles not currently included Vehicle Information: 2019 Jeep Cherokee, 3.2L V6, ~86,000 miles
