Issue: On certain vehicles, moisture can enter the brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) and cause a short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. This can happen even if the vehicle is parked. Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a relay to power off the HECU when the vehicle is turned off. Kia recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

On certain vehicles, the secondary hood latch could corrode, and may result in the mechanical binding of the latch. This could cause the secondary hood latch to remain in the open position when the hood is closed. If the vehicle were to be driven with the primary hood latch disengaged, there is a potential that the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood closed as designed while the vehicle is in motion. If this were to occur, it could compromise the driver’s ability to see the road and its users, as well as cause damage to the windshield. These issues could result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the secondary latch with an improved secondary latch with an enhanced corrosion coating.

On certain vehicles, road salt can corrode the front control arms, which may ultimately lead to control arm failure. This could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: For 2006-2007 model year vehicles, dealers will replace the front lower control arms if they were not previously replaced under recall 2013-388. For 2008-2012 model year vehicles, dealers will inspect the control arms and either apply an anticorrosion treatment or replace the control arms, as necessary. On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. Additionally, a faulty switch may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles so that the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of PARK position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Correction: Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.

Unknown... So whenever it gets hot in the summertime lately. My car has an issue starting sometimes it doesn't start and I've taken it in have the mechanic look at it. They can't figure out what's going on with that. They say that it's known issue that they've had and they told me to Bang on the relay inside my vehicle. And sometimes that starts up right away and other times it takes a little bit for my car to start. They could not figure out what was causing it and sometimes all of my lights on my dashboard light up my air bag, ABS, check engine. Those will light up and I think it's something to do with the electrical or the fuel system. I don't know, i've replaced parts on it and I'm still having the issue. I don't know what is going on. I've replaced some fuses and they've blown so that's why I'm thinking it's something to do with the electrical. My mechanic couldn't figure out what it was and he says he has had many kias have the same issue.

A year after the recall repair was performed, while his wife was driving 55 MPH, grayish smoke started coming from under the hood. While she was pulling over, the ABS warning light illuminated the instrument panel due to both front brake calipers locking up. The contact’s wife allowed the vehicle to cool down for a while and was able to restart the vehicle and drive home without further incidence. The contact, who is a mechanic, then drove the vehicle to his dealer for an inspection and discovered that water had entered the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) which caused the module to corrode. The contact also discovered that both fuses in the under-hood fuse block had blown which caused the smoke. Upon replacing the fuses, the same failure recurred with smoke coming from the engine due to the replacement fuses being blown. The contact then spoke with the dealer where the recall was performed and was provided a diagnostic fee to inspect the vehicle. The contact then reached out to the manufacturer where he was provided a case number but had not yet received a follow-up call from the manufacturer. The vehicle had yet to be repaired.
