SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:ROTOR
I replaced my rear rotors and brake pads with Duralast black painted rotors in June. I inquired about the painted rotors and the salesperson at AutoZone said the paint would wear off from the rotors where the brakes pads contacted the rotors after a few miles of use. The paint did wear off in the area of the brakes pads under normal use. In August, after driving 30-40 minutes, the parking break was applied because the vehicle was parked on an incline. This was the first time the parking brake had been used since the rotors were replaced. It was a hot day in the 90's and when the parking break was disengaged, the vehicle would not move. The vehicle had set for 2-3 hours with the break applied. Several attempts to move the vehicle and free the parking break failed. The vehicle had to be towed to local auto shop. The mechanic found the parking break pads adhered to the inner rotor surface and had to pry the pads off. After some searches on the internet, I found that this had happened to other people that had rear painted rotors installed. The rotors heat up while driving, causing the paint to become "tacky". If the parking break is applied for a few hours, it becomes like a glue and the parking brake will not release. Again, this is only for the parking brake on painted rear rotors. This would apply to any vehicle, not just my make and model. This could be a safety concern since a vehicle could become stranded on the side of the road with no way to move the vehicle except by a tow truck. The attached pictures show the inner rotor surface after the mechanic grinded the surface for a good parking brake contact area, thus removing the paint. The other picture shows the material on the parking brake surface when it was removed. The fixes would be. either to not paint the inner rotor surface where the parking break contacts the rotor or remove the paint prior to installation.

I am reporting an ABS/braking safety issue with my 2010 Nissan Murano. My vehicle was included in Nissan campaign P0A08/NTB21-047 involving brake fluid and the ABS actuator. Before the campaign, I had experienced an intermittent braking problem during a loss-of-traction/ABS event. When Nissan performed P0A08 on 8/8/2023 at 191,017 miles, I specifically reported the problem. The Nissan repair order states: “CUSTOMER STATES IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING TO FLOOR.” The ABS actuator passed Nissan’s campaign inspection, but because of my complaint, the service manager contacted Nissan/WCC regarding actuator replacement. The repair order states: “SERVICE MANAGER CALLED WCC TO VERIFY COVERAGE OF ABS ACTUATOR AFTER IT PASSED INSPECTION FOR RECALL.” Nissan case J0003385169 was opened. The intermittent condition could not be duplicated during a test drive, so the actuator was not replaced. On 8/20/2026, ABS, BRAKE, SLIP and VDC OFF warning lights began illuminating while driving. Nissan diagnosed ABS code C1140 – ACTUATOR RLY. After further testing, the Nissan repair order states: “CIRCUIT GOOD… INTERNAL CONCERN WITH ABS ACTUATOR.” Nissan now recommends replacing the ABS actuator. My safety concern is that this is the same actuator that passed the P0A08 inspection and remained in service despite my documented brake-pedal-to-floor complaint. I ask NHTSA to review whether the P0A08 inspection/remedy adequately identifies intermittent ABS actuator failures and whether similar vehicles may remain at risk.

My car wouldn't start one morning. All lights lit up on dash, headlights continually started flashing and fan running under hood. I had to get to work so took a Lyft. I knew older son would be home from firestation around 830. When he got there battery completely dead. He jumped the car started right up. He drove to autozone to have battery checked (about 5 blocks). Battery was fine. He drove home. When I got home car started right up. I started it up again about 5 hours later. Went on my road trip I had planned about 2 hour drive. On Sunday I get in my car to leave and it does same thing it did Friday morning. I had to have car towed back to Nissan dealership in my hometown ( 700.00). Dealership had car for 3 days and came up with ABS module shorting to CAN unit. Only problem is the part is on backorder and Nissan can not even tell me when part will be in. This was almost 3 weeks ago. I have had no car for 3 weeks. I paid 555.00 for diagnostics and they want me to pay to order a part that isn't even available and was told Nissan has no idea when it will be. Why would I give them more money to order a part that is not even available. Is the part not available because this common problem? I do know there was recall on year before mine, 2018, and my car was manufactured 2/2019. My car is now in my driveway sitting, waiting to see if a part becomes available. But I feel this is an ongoing problem with Nissan.

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) actuators are bolted directly to the brake caliper. It has been detected that the factory retaining bolts lack a threadlocking compound (such as Loctite) to prevent them from backing out due to normal vehicle vibration. As a result, the bolts back out completely and fall off, causing the actuator to become loose and detach from the brake caliper.

My car several times while driving randomly had the traction control loss light pop up randomly (dry conditions) several times through a 45 minute drive. Around the 35 minute mark it popped up again, and my car completely stalled out. My VIN is allegedly not apart of one of their recalls but it appears as if it’s the exact same issue many others had and that it should have been included with said recall.

NHTSA Vehicle Safety Complaint – 2018 Nissan Murano Submitted by: [XXX] Vehicle: 2018 Nissan Murano VIN: [XXX] Mileage at time of issue: Approx. 93,500 miles Location: Albuquerque, NM Date of issue onset: [XXX] Summary of the Problem: Shortly after my vehicle was serviced at a Nissan dealership, it began exhibiting serious mechanical and electrical issues. These include: - Transmission jerking and slipping between gears - Uncommanded RPM surging while accelerating - Occasional loss of power, particularly at highway speeds - Dashboard flickering, resetting, and other electrical irregularities - Brake caliper drag and significantly reduced gas mileage Third-Party Diagnosis: A certified independent repair shop reported the following: - Transmission malfunction (needs full replacement) - Dragging brake caliper - Engine overfilled with oil - Erratic RPM behavior Despite these findings, the dealership dismissed all concerns and returned the vehicle unrepaired, with no adequate documentation of the work performed. Additional Concerns: I believe the vehicle was accessed and tampered with while at the dealership. After their service: - My dashboard and door panels were visibly unsealed or repositioned - The vehicle was held for extended periods (multiple weeks) - No paperwork was provided showing any actual mechanical repairs I have before-and-after photographs and text messages confirming this timeline and change in condition. Safety Impact: The transmission failure, RPM spikes, and braking inconsistencies make the vehicle unsafe to drive. These problems pose a significant crash risk, especially in highway traffic or while merging. I’m submitting this report to NHTSA to contribute to any ongoing investigations related to this vehicle make/model and to help prevent further consumer risk. Additional Observation – Abnormal Heat After Driving After driving the vehicle, extreme heat can be felt rising from underneath the dr INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On [XXX] I was driving back down [XXX] , stopped at red light and when light changed to green, I proceeded to take off and as I got under the interstate overpass my vehicle abruptly started slowing down as if it was going to shut completely down and the panel in the dash turned red with a symbol of a car. There was a vehicle coming directly behind me and I am thankful they were not following me closely because it may have caused them to hit me from behind. A few seconds later the vehicle picked up speed and the red warning light disappeared quickly. 11/11/24 I made a call to Nissan Consumer Affairs to create a case (case#[XXX]) and representative opened and closed the case without escalating to a specialist for review. On 11/13/24 I took the Vehicle into a Nissan Dealership to perform a diagnostic on the vehicle and no code was found. I was told to bring the vehicle back in for a full day to troubleshoot. With all of the safety features this vehicle has, I thought issues like this would be recorded. I asked the service advisor if anyone else has reported this issue and he stated not on the 23 Murano but have received reports of other Nissan vehicles just shutting down. This could have been a very bad situation and Nissan Consumer Affairs did not seem to care when this issue was brought to their attention. Also have reported issue with brake pedal squeaking and wheel slipping when making short turn on driver's side. Issues are never found by the dealership in most cases, until the warranty runs out which is very short (3yrs 36,000). I attempted to upload document to support my trip to dealership, but received message that file is too large. Car power steering rack liking bad, car has 46k miles This car should be recalled, is got major issues with power steering rack, in which Nissan didn’t do it right do to parts shortage, this is dangerous for my kids this car can burn any second, if you telling me that car at 46 k has a major power steering leek I would never buy this car, we took our car into Nissan they do not want to fix this, they asking $2100 to fix for what Nissan did when they build a car, this has to be on recall list for all Nissan 2017, , local Nissan is ignoring this problem, we will sue , this is a dangerous problem to have on the car, it will catch a fire eventually, start resolving this to avoid law suits. Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

This car it was in the garage. I almost never use it only sometimes to go in the store and this cannot happen. The car who passed just 46,000. Steering Rack: Power steering rack and electronic power steering fluid - Power steering is very notchy. Upon inspection of vehicle found power steering rack leaking from the passenger side seal. Recommend replacing rack and bleeding power steering system. The steering wheel is attached to the steering rack by the steering shaft. When the steering wheel is turned, the steering rack interprets the directional input and pushes or pulls the front wheels in the desired direction. The steering rack is secured to the chassis.
