A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing
out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single
owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2009 Ford Ranger
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 20210778,811 units in Canada
Airbag
Issue: This recall is for certain vehicles that had the driver-front and/or passenger-front airbag inflator replaced after a collision or theft. An obsolete airbag may have been installed. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Action: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford dealer to inspect the driver and/or passenger airbag inflator or module and replace it, if necessary. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

Vehicles repaired under the previous recalls do not require repair under this recall.

Airbag
On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional note: This recall is superseded by recall 2019005 (Ford Recall 19S01). Airbag
Ford Canada is conducting a voluntary Safety Improvement Program involving passenger airbag inflators in certain vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in certain high humidity areas of the United States equipped with Takata airbags. Ford will replace the driver or passenger inflator on affected vehicles, depending on the vehicle involved. Owners who believe their vehicles may have been originally purchased or registered in the states of New Jersey, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands should contact a Ford dealer. This action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Note: This Safety Improvement Program is superseded by recall 2019005 (Ford Recall 19S01). Lights And Instruments
On certain 2011 Ranger vehicles, the multi-function switch, installed during vehicle assembly, could malfunction and fail. Additionally, other vehicle models may have received the affected switch as a replacement part during service, and are therefore also involved in this campaign. Failure of the multi-function switch could result in a loss of turn signal, tail lamp, hazard warning signal flasher and/or stop lamp function. Failure of these lighting components to illuminate may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, as well as reducing vehicle conspicuity during hours of darkness, which could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the multi-function switch.
Recall 2009018982 units in Canada
Steering
On certain Ranger 4x2 pickup trucks, the front spindle may have been manufactured without proper heat treating. As a result the spindle may, over time, fatigue to fracture without warning, which could allow the front spindle and wheel to separate from the vehicle. A wheel separation may result in a loss of control which could lead to a crash, causing property damage, personal injury, or death. Correction: Dealers will verify the front spindle manufacturing date and, if necessary, replace the spindle assembly.

TRAVELING HOME FROM A TRIP OUT OF TOWN, WE EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT PULL TO THE RIGHT, WHICH ONLY HAPPENED ONCE AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR TRIP. WE WERE THINKING IT MAY BE TIME FOR AN ALIGNMENT. AS WE WERE TRAVELING HOME, WE STOPPED FOR GAS AND UPON RETURNING TO THE EXPRESSWAY AND GAINING SPEED, SOMETHING IN THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE TRUCK SNAPPED. THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE AND THEN THE TRUCK VEERED SEVERELY TO THE RIGHT. AS WE ATTEMPTED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE TRUCK IT SLAMMED INTO THE CONCRETE WALL DIVIDING THE HIGHWAYS. MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH HAVE MULTIPLE BRUISES, ALONG WITH QUITE A BIT OF PAIN AT THE MOMENT. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE WALKED AWAY FROM THIS ACCIDENT. THE TRUCK IS A TOTAL LOSS AND QUITE SCARY TO LOOK AT. I DO HAVE PICTURES AVAILABLE IF REQUESTED.

SERVICE BRAKES
MY PARENTS 2009 FORD RANGER HAS HAD AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. WE TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS NOT WORKING. THEY INSTALLED IT AND IT DIDN'T RESOLVE THE PROBLEM! ON DAY TWO, THEY CAME UP WITH A NEW DIAGNOSIS THAT THE TONE/EXCITER RING WAS DAMAGED BY A PREVIOUS MECHANIC/BRAKE JOB. THE TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 35,000 MILES. THEY WANTED ANOTHER $400 TO REPLACE THE TONE RING. I DECLINED BECAUSE IT WAS WAY TOO MUCH MONEY AFTER PAYING $300 FOR THE SENSOR. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T WARRANTY THEIR WORK, AFTERWARDS, I BEGAN TO RESEARCH FORD BRAKE ISSUES, AND SPECIFICALLY ABS & TONE RING ISSUES. IT TURNS OUT, THAT AFTER LOOKING AT VARIOUS YOUTUBE VIDEOS, FORD FORUMNS, ARTICLES, ETC. I LEARNED THAT FORD HAS HAD SIGNIFICANT ABS ISSUES ESPECIALLY IN 2008 AND 2009. EVEN MORE INTERESTING WAS THE FACT THAT MANY MODELS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS (FOCUS AND ESCAPE) AND HAVE MAY HAVE BEEN RECALLED. NOT 100% SURE, BUT THE RANGER HAS NOT. BASICALLY, THE TONE RING IS ATTACHED TO THE WHEEL HUB/AXLE AND SPINS WITH THE TIRE. THIS CREATES A MAGNETIC FIELD WHEREIN THE SENSOR DETERMINES THE SPEED OF THE WHEEL. IF THE TONE RING IS DAMAGED, THE SENSOR SENDS VARIOUS ERROR CODES TO THE ECM AT WHICH POINT THE ABS BRAKE WILL DISENGAGE THE BRAKES ON THE WHEEL AFFECTED. AND THEN IT WILL ENGAGE THE BRAKES, AND REPEAT THIS UNTIL THE VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP. ESSENTIALLY, THE ABS SYSTEM OVERRIDES THE BREAK PEDAL AND YOU LOSE BRAKING ABILITY ON THAT WHEEL. NOT ONLY THAT, WITH MY VEHICLE, THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS HAVE NEVER COME ON; EVEN AFTER THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR. THE VEHICLE IS GETTING WORSE. AT EVERY STOP IT'S MAKING NOISES AND IT'S HARDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AS I SAID EARLIER, THE THEORY IS THE CORROSION OF THE AXLE IS BREAKING THE RING, WHICH IS ANOTHER NON RUSTING METAL, I'M PRETTY SURE THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT EXAMINE THE RING. HELP!!!!
