NHTSA investigations into the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2019573 34,764 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the fuel pump relay could fail. A fuel pump relay failure can result in a no-start condition or cause a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: Vehicles that had a fuel pump relay replaced as part of a Transport Canada Recall No. 2014-386 (FCA Recall No. P54) or 2015-085 (R09) require a second repair under this recall. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump relay, mounting bracket and related wiring.

Recall 2017450 39,817 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, a brake booster shield may have been incorrectly installed as part of recall P14/2014-112. An incorrectly installed shield could be less effective in diverting water away from the brake booster, creating the possibility of corrosion allowing water to get inside. In a cold climate, water inside the brake booster could freeze limiting the braking ability of the vehicle, resulting in longer braking distances, increasing the risk of crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the installation of the brake booster shield and perform repairs as necessary.

Recall 2017341 29,625 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles equipped with electro-hydraulic power steering (“EHPS”), the alternator may fail suddenly. This could result in the engine stalling, causing a loss of motive power which could increase the risk of a crash as well as disable various vehicle safety systems, and could also cause a fire. Both issues could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the part number on the alternator, and will replace the alternator as necessary. Note: Only specific engine and alternator combinations are affected by this campaign.

Recall 2015085 18,873 units in Canada

Fuel System

This recall was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2019-573 (FCA Recall No. V62). On certain vehicles, a fuel pump relay within the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) could fail, causing the engine to stall or to fail to start. Engine stalling would result in a loss of motive power, which, in conjunction with driver reactions and traffic conditions, could increase the risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will install a revised fuel pump relay external to the TIPM-7.

Recall 2014446 16,080 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles equipped with 3.6L engines and 160 amp output alternators, the alternator may fail suddenly. This could result in the engine stalling, causing a loss of motive power which could increase the risk of a crash as well as disable various vehicle safety systems, and could also cause a fire. Both issues could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the alternator.

Recall 2014275 45,681 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles equipped with illuminated sun visor vanity mirrors, service repairs requiring removal of the sun visors and/or headliner may cause an electrical short circuit, which could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect wiring for damage and repair as necessary, re-route wiring and install a sun visor spacer.

Recall 2014112 42,380 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the centre shell of the brake booster may corrode. A corroded centre shell could allow water to get inside the brake booster, which in a cold climate may freeze. This could result in inadequate braking, increasing stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace any brake booster that has an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, all affected vehicles will have a water diverter shield added to the brake booster.

Recall 2014070 889 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) may have an out of specification traction isolation valve. This would cause the driver to experience a momentary hard brake pedal feel during certain braking events, which in conjunction with driver reactions, may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the ABS module.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

SEATS

On August 17, 2026, while my wife was driving our 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 under normal conditions, the front passenger Active Head Restraint (AHR/headrest) suddenly and violently deployed without any collision, impact, or other apparent triggering event. I was seated in the front passenger seat and the spring-loaded head restraint struck me hard in the back of the head. Approximately 24 hours after the incident, I developed headache, pain around/behind my eyes, and nausea. The symptoms are intermittent, with periods of feeling normal followed by nausea and headache. Because of these symptoms following the head impact, and as advised by my GP, I went to the hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The Jeep dealer has inspected the vehicle and advised that the passenger head restraint requires replacement. The repair could be handled under my Mopar Lifetime Maximum Care warranty. However, the dealer has also advised me that Jeep/FCA no longer has the replacement head restraint available, so the defective safety component currently cannot be replaced with the required new part. I am also concerned about the driver’s Active Head Restraint because it is the same age and design as the passenger-side unit that deployed unexpectedly. The dealer advised that the driver’s unit cannot be replaced under warranty unless it also fails. FCA/Jeep has been notified of the incident and my resulting injury and is reviewing the matter. I am filing this complaint because an occupant-restraint component deployed without a collision, caused a head injury requiring hospital evaluation, and a replacement for the failed safety component is reportedly no longer available from the manufacturer.

My 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with the 3.6L Pentastar v6 has a persistent cylinder 2 misfire (P0302). The cylinder 2 spark plug, ignition coil, and fuel injector have already been replaced, but the misfire continues. Diagnostic testing with a scan tool confirmed that cylinder 2 accumulated 61 misfires during a single test while cylinders 1,3, 4, 5, and 6 recorded zero, and the misfire monitor reported " Fail this trip" the vehicle can appear to drive normally despite the active misfire. I became aware that Chrysler issued warranty bulletin x56 concerning the 3.6L left cylinder head on certain 2011- 2013 vehicles including select 2013 Jeep grand Cherokees. I contact a jeep dealer and advise that my VIN is not included in that warranty extension. I am reporting this because my vehicle is experiencing a similar cylinder specific misfire concerns and I believe this condition should be documented and investigated.

The contact owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The dealer informed the contact that the battery charge was extremely low. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, and was informed that the alternator had failed. The alternator was replaced. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle sputtered and stalled. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Took my vehicle to dealership for fuel pump recall. Was told it wasn’t the actual pump but the wiring and they fixed it. Vehicle continued to have the same issues plus a new issue where the car completely stalled out while driving. I took it back, they said the parts they put on were defective but I’d still have to pay 300$. I paid the money and within 10 hours of getting my car back I stalled on the highway in the fast lane. Luckily it was traffic so no one was hurt and I didn’t cause an accident but this is dangerous and I let the dealership know and all they said was bring it back for a day. I did and they couldn’t tell me anything.

Active head restraint deployed on drivers side while auto was moving in parking lot. This unexpected event made the driver come to a sudden stop. There was no impacts of this vehicle into any object. No injury to the driver in the parking lot but is pssible injury to driver and other in the parking lot could have happened. After inspection it looks like a plastic bracket broke inside the active head rest.

My son was hit head on in a very serious accident and his airbag on driver side didn’t fully deploy resulting in injuries. I’m not sure what component was faulty but the airbag should have fully deployed.

Was driving on highway going 60 miles following traffic my car suddenly stalled took me a little bit to pull over, switched off the car, the car made a funny sound. Waited 5 mins and the car started again. My car is constantly stalling, doesn’t give me any warning signals and the Jeep dealership I go to cannot figure out what it is. It takes about min before my car can restart and i keep moving

I will be going 50-65 mph down the highway and my jeep will just die. It will die for about 10-15 seconds then start again. This is very dangerous. I have talked to multiple people that this has happened too.
