Recalls on the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

13V175000

POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Risk: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

10V200000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE

CHRYSLER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 CHRYSLER 300, DODGE CHALLENGER, CHARGER, JEEP COMMANDER, GRAND CHEROKEE AND DODGE RAM VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH A WIRELESS IGNITION NODE (WIN) MODULE EXHIBITING A BINDING CONDITION OF THE SOLENOID LATCH.

Risk: THE RESULT OF THE DEFECT COULD LEAD TO A CONDITION WHERE THE KEY MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH (WIN MODULE) PRIOR TO PLACING THE SHIFTER IN PARK. THIS COULD RESULT IN THE POTENTIAL FOR UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT AND COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

10V085000

EQUIPMENT

CHRYSLER IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2010 JEEP COMMANDER AND GRAND CHEROKEE VEHICLES. THEY MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH AN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED REAR TRACK BAR.

Risk: REDUCED VEHICLE STABILITY COULD OCCUR INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

10V009000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

CHRYSLER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 CHRYSLER SEBRING; DODGE AVENGER AND NITRO; JEEP LIBERTY, COMMANDER AND GRAND CHEROKEE; AND MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 DODGE RAM TRUCK. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH AN IMPROPERLY FORMED OR MISSING BRAKE BOOSTER INPUT ROD RETAINING CLIP.

Risk: THIS COULD RESULT IN BRAKE FAILURE WITHOUT WARNING WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH.

09V454000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

CHRYSLER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 22 THROUGH NOVEMBER 12, 2009. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG MAY NOT PROPERLY DEPLOY THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TEAR SEAM.

Risk: THE AIRBAG MAY NOT PROPERLY PROTECT THE PASSENGER IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2024548 314,717 units in Canada

Label

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.

Recall 2013155 28,423 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain vehicles equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, the transfer case controller could fail. This could cause the transfer case to shift into or through the neutral position, which may allow the vehicle to roll away, even with the transmission in the PARK position. Should the vehicle roll away, it could strike another vehicle, stationary object, or a bystander, causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the final drive controller with updated software.

Recall 2010151 8,902 units in Canada

Other

Certain vehicles equipped with automatic transmission may have been built with a Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module exhibiting a binding condition of the solenoid latch. This may result in a condition where the Ignition key can be removed from the WIN module prior to placing the shifter in PARK. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, which may cause property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the WIN module.

Recall 2010070 216 units in Canada

Suspension

Certain vehicles may have been built with an improperly manufactured rear track bar. This could result in noise and reduced vehicle stability, which may cause a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace affected track bars.

Recall 2010009 3,514 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the brake booster input rod may have been installed without the retaining clip, or in some cases, with an improperly formed retaining clip. Should the input rod separate from the assembly it could lead to a loss of brakes, which could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install or replace the retaining clips.

Recall 2009344 317 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, an incorrectly manufactured instrument panel top cover tear seam may affect passenger airbag deployment. Failure to fully deploy the airbag could increase the risk of personal injury or death during a vehicle crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the instrument panel top cover.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

ENGINE

Driving 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee with HEMI engine on the freeway and the car lost engine power causing it to rapidly slow. Was able to make it safely to the side of the freeway, although multiple cars had to avoid, and had the car towed to our mechanic. The mechanic stated that the car needed an entire new engine as there were issues with the timing chain that then caused issues to the surrounding valves. In doing research, as this car only has 98,000 miles and is always serviced, I found that Chrysler has already recalled the Challengers with the same 5.7L HEMI engines, but has not done so for the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee's. We are at a loss and looking at $8,000-$10,000 to get a new engine and pay for labor. Currently looking for an attorney or an existing class action lawsuit as if we knew there were problems, we would have done things ahead of time to prevent the engine failure. There was NO WARNING provided on this issue, but have now found multiple individual complaints about the same issue on the internet. Please advise.

I WAS DRIVING MY CAR DOWN A HILL AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES AND HOUR, ECO MODE WAS ACTIVATED, AND BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN THE LIGHT WHEN SUDDENLY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. I FELT MY CAR LOSING POWER AND STEERING, BUT THANKFULLY WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE IT TOTALLY SHUT OFF. I HAD IT TOWED TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY INSPECTED IT AND INFORMED ME THAT THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE. THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE AND INFORMED ME IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE THAT THIS HAPPENED DUE TO NORMAL USE OF THE VEHICLE. THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE CHAIN, TENSIONERS, ETC., WHICH I HAD THEM DO, BUT THEY WENT TO TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE VALVES. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, I CAME ACROSS THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE, OCCURRING UNDER THE SAME OR SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES, IN DODGE CHALLENGERS AND CHARGERS WITH THE SAME ENGINE (5.7L V8 HEMI) IN THE SAME YEAR (2010). I SAW THAT THERE WAS AN OPEN RECALL FOR THOSE VEHICLES AND CALLED JEEP TO DISCUSS THIS, BUT THEY INFORMED ME THAT WHILE THIS WAS THE SAME THING, THERE WAS NO OPEN RECALLS FOR MY GRAND CHEROKEE AND SO THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO.
