NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2004 Ford F-150

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Fuel Tank Strap Failure Due to Corrosion

One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and fail (break or separate). If one strap fails, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface. If both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.If either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill. When the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present. In some cases...

ODI opened this investigation based on reports of inadvertent airbag deployment.Data provided by Ford indicated that the airbag clockspring jumper wire, which is situated inside the steering wheel assembly, was installed in a manner that would allow it to rub (abrade) against a sharp metal edge on the nearby horn plate.Because the horn plate is electrically grounded the abrasion of an airbag wire on the sharp edge could cause a short circuit condition. As a result the airbag light may illuminate and/or the airbag may inadvertently deploy.Inadvertent deployments are most likely to occur during t...

Recall 2019420 5,327 units in Canada

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

Fuel System

On certain 1997-2003 F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage, 1997-1999 F-250, and 2002-2003 Lincoln Blackwood vehicles that were originally sold in or are currently operated in areas of heavy road salt usage during winter months (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador), the fuel tank straps could corrode and fail. This could allow the fuel tank to contact the ground, which may compromise the tank's integrity and permit fuel leakage. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will install fuel tank straps with improved corrosion protection.

Recall 2011073 8,780 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the airbag clockspring jumper wire may be oriented in a way that allows contact with the lower horn mounting plate. In this position the wire insulation may chafe, exposing bare copper, and creating the potential for a short circuit. Should this occur, the airbag warning lamp will illuminate, indicating service is required. In some instances, the driver's airbag could inadvertently deploy. Inadvertent deployment in a non-collision (non-impact) situation may create expensive vehicle repair, including replacement of the driver's airbag module. In some instances, inadvertent deployment could cause minor injuries to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will install an updated clockspring jumper wire which incorporates a protective mesh cover.

Recall 2004317 16 units in Canada

Fuel System

Certain vehicles may have a fuel tank with a depression at the seam between top and bottom halves of the tank (not visible from outside the fuel tank). If a depression is large enough, fuel may permeate the fuel tank wall resulting in a fuel odour, illumination of the "Service Engine Soon" indicator light, or a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel tank.

Recall 2004141 20 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles, localized depressions in the fuel tank wall at the seam between the top and bottom halves of the tank may allow fuel to permeate resulting in a fuel odour, and/or a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Correction: Dealer will replace the fuel tank.

I get a warning message which indicates the the Crash Sensor is not working on my Ford truck - this component inflates the Air Bag in the event of a crash. The part number for the Crash Sensor is Motorcraft 6L3Z-14B004-AA. I attempted to purchase a replacement Crash Sensor from a local Ford dealer. I was told that Ford no longer makes this part. The parts manager suggested that I check with local aftermarket parts stores; Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, Fisher and NAPA. Nobody makes an aftermarket Crash Sensor for my vehicle. I also searched Amazon without success. I am therefore driving a vehicle with Air Bags which will not deploy - possibly causing a fatality. It seems like the manufacturer, Ford, should be required to sell replacement Crash Sensors until they become available as an Aftermarket Product.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
