There are known issues with Honda crv’s frames rusting in many states. There was a recall which we had inspection and straps added to strengthen frame. Now, frame has failed and even after filing a case with Honda care in April 2026, they continue to close the case, reopen it when we call back, call us with ring less voice mails so we are never able to talk to any case manager, and leave recorded voicemail for us to call back - and there is NO “Alexis” case manager. Dealership Dahl Honda in Rhinelander has been no help and upon initial inspection in April, would not say if safe to drive or not - only would say they forwarded pics and info to Honda Care.

On 05/06/2026 the vehicle was in for service at the Honda dealership (The Automaster, 3328 Shelburne Rd. Shelburne VT 05482). The inspection report notes "Rust Holes forming above rear trailing arms, non reparable area, will not pass future state inspection, recommend customer contact Honda of America @ 1-800-999-1009". They also provided a picture of the problem. I took the car to another garage and was informed that YES, this was a real issue and that the garage owner just spoke with someone who had a 2018 CRV with the same problem. The Honda dealership sent me a Recommendation Letter that stated "***Rear trailing arms (soon), *** State Inspection.

Left and Right suspension Front and Back. Yes car will be available for inspection when called. No one’s safety was at risk. It has been confirmed by an independent service center. No other place has inspected the car/component except for the independent service center. No there were no warning lamps, I was able to tell something was wrong because when I’d turn and still till this day, it immediately makes a sound. This has been happening for about 3-4 years.

My 2007 Honda CR-V was repaired under NHTSA Recall 23V-228 for corrosion in the rear frame at the trailing arm mount, a condition Honda's own filing says can allow the trailing arm to detach while driving. My vehicle received the support-brace remedy rather than a full structural repair. Since that July 18, 2023 repair, the vehicle has developed Right Rear (RR) tracking instability, whooshing and high-pitched whistling noises, tire bead damage, and toxic exhaust fumes entering the cabin. The component at issue is the rear frame at the trailing arm mount, along with the related RR suspension/tracking behavior and RR tire. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request and is currently located in Wilmington, Delaware. Because corrosion in this area can allow the trailing arm to detach while driving, and my vehicle now shows RR tracking instability, pulling, and a sheared RR tire bead along with toxic exhaust fumes in the cabin, I believe these conditions risk loss of vehicle control and expose occupants to hazardous fumes while driving. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent shop. Union Park Honda could not duplicate the noise I reported on October 30, 2023, and independent shops since December 2024 have performed repairs but have not confirmed a root cause for the tracking, noises, or fumes. No formal inspection has been performed by Honda's engineering staff, police, or an insurer. Mechanics at Union Park Honda and four independent shops (Penny Hill, Firestone, Harvey Road Automotive, and Mighty Muffler) have attempted repairs, but none has performed a structural or root-cause inspection. No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared at any point. The first symptom I noticed was the whooshing noise, immediately after the July 18, 2023 recall repair.

My vehicle was taken into Automaster Honda, the dealership where I purchased it, on June 11, 2026, for the yearly required VT safety inspection and other minor service. I was told that due to rust holes near the REAR TRAILING ARMS my vehicle would not pass a safety inspection. Publicly available information indicates that this condition can potentially cause a loss of control of the vehicle, and thus a crash, and presumably, potential loss of life!! There is no recall for this issue in this model year Honda, there is no fix, (even though there was a recall on 2007-2011 model year Hondas for the same issue) and my dealership is not able to recommend anyone who might be able to fix this problem. They can't fix it. According to the service manager at Automaster, Honda Canada has reportedly been issued a bulletin indicating that this 'problem' is neither a safety or structural issue but no such bulletin has been issued for Honda U.S. He advised me that my vehicle is safe to drive; however, I still cannot get an inspection sticker, without which I could receive a citation, and I am still troubled each time I get in this car. I don't think I could sell this car even if I wanted to because of this issue. The only entity who has inspected my vehicle is the dealership. There were no warning lights or messages and last year, supposedly conducting the same inspection, there was no indication of this problem or I was not informed of one at that time. I am going in July 16 for a necessary brake job, something also recommended on June 11 when I was advised of the trailing arm issue. I can't drive around with worn brakes. Photos attached are from June 11, taken with a technician's cell phone. When I go in on July 16, I will view the damage myself and take my own pictures. On June 11, the vehicle had already been taken off the lift and I could not see the damage myself that day. Thank you.

The frame rust issue was recalled through 2011, my 2012 was manufactured in the same plant same time as the 2011 model, and has the same rust issue, but was not included in the recall. I have significant damage to my vehicle from rust frame, causing it to be borderline unsafe without modification. I would like to have this included in the recall.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while making a left turn, several warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel, and the steering wheel became significantly unsteady, causing a partial loss of vehicle control. Because the incident occurred within walking distance of the residence, the contact used a toy hauler to tow the vehicle to the residence. An inspection revealed that the rear passenger-side trailing arm had completely detached from the vehicle and punctured the subframe. Upon investigating the failure, the contact discovered that prior Honda models had experienced identical failures resulting from severe subframe corrosion. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but denied any assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 210,000.

My car failed the annual Massachusetts State safety inspection done on XXX. The areas of failure were FRAME, FRONT END, and MUFFLER/EXHAUST. I was advised to not drive the car due to risk of frame failure due to extensive rust. I then brought vehicle to Atamian Honda ([XXX]) on XXX pursuant to Honda Service Bulleting (Recall) 23-032. The dealer contacted me later that day to tell me that the car was ready. The Service Concierge told me: (1) The car is ready as they did the recall. (2) The Technician said that the rust and rot was so sever that they could not put the car on a lift. (3) They could not complete the Multi Point Inspection due to the rust. (4) The technician advised me to not drive the car due to the condition causing an unsafe vehicle. I went to the dealer to sign off on the invoice and arranged a tow of the Honda to my home, as I did not want to risk driving in it. I opened a Case with Honda Corporate to claim that, despite the dealer's Recall being processed, that protocols of the Recall process were not followed; specifically, there are 2 fundamental actions that are required in order to properly process this Recall: completion of the MPI(Multi Point Inspection) and the placement of the car on a lift. Neither of these were done. Honda Corporate contacted me on XXX and, despite my claim on case number XXX, their position is that the dealer performed the Recall. Goodday, I bought the car a month ago from a dealer on terms. The first time i drove car and turning right its sounds like the wheel or something is about to break off. Like maybe the axel. Extremly loud. Scary loud. No matter speed, turning right does this. I returned car to dealer. They say the router had rust and was corrected. I dont drive the car alot, but again today its making that noise. That pedestrians look worried.

The vehicle was driven to the contact's mother's residence. The contact's mother contacted an independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed with a corroded trailing arm and rear suspension. The contact was informed that the trailing arm and rear suspension needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact's mother stated that a recall, NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure) was performed in September 2023. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH approaching a red light, the rear trailing arm detached from the tire. No warning lights were illuminated. The driver was able to dive to a parking lot. The vehicle was transported on a trailer by her father. The front door latch had become inoperable. The contact had to tie the door shut but was later repaired by her father. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. Last night I turned left out of an ally and heard a loud thunk like noise similar to when you run over a rock and it shoots out from under your tire. Noise was in the front passenger side. Thought nothing of it at the time. Then today I heard it again turning into the gas station. Then while driving I heard it once while just taking off from a stop sign and again pulling out of a parking lot. My husband has taken it for a drive of 12 miles and has been unable to recreate the noise. Sounds almost like the spring on the strut is broke or something in that area needs fixed.

Due to excessive corrosion the spring/strut broke while driving. The tire is off at an angle and could have come completely off endangering the driver and other drivers. There was no warning light or any other indication that this was going to happen. The car was taken to a local garage and at the insistence of Honda, it was also towed to a Honda dealership. Both locations deemed the car irreparable and a total loss due to excessive rust and corrosion. Honda has been contacted multiple times and refuses to acknowledge any issues. Even though we were given a case number, there hasn't been any closure to the case.
