Owners have filed 798 complaints
about the 2014 Honda Cr-V with NHTSA between 2013 and 2026.
The largest single group is the engine & cooling.
Across this model's run it ranks 5 of 30 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 56
Against the median year of the Honda Cr-V. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 71
13.7% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 100
70% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA investigations into the 2014 Honda Cr-V
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) manufactured by ZF-TRW. The ECU receives signals from crash sensors mount...
Recalls on the 2014 Honda Cr-V
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

POWER TRAIN
I own a 2014 Honda CR-V. Since around November 2022 I have repeatedly experienced an intermittent “bounce” or shudder when accelerating, especially around 20–25 mph and sometimes at higher speeds (around 45 mph and above). The vehicle feels like it briefly loses power or slips before catching again, and the check-engine light has come on and off during this period. I took the vehicle to Stockton Honda (CA) multiple times and consistently reported this bounce/shudder on take-off. Each time, the focus was on brakes, rotors, tires, or other maintenance items. I was never told there might be an engine or timing-chain issue or that the vehicle could be unsafe to drive. The bounce/shudder never went away. I have also been involved in multiple low-speed collisions while taking off from a stop in the past few years, and I am concerned that this hesitation/loss of power may have contributed. In late 2025, Honda of Elk Grove performed a full diagnostic, retrieved a P031 code, and told me the most likely cause is a timing-chain problem. I was advised that the vehicle is not recommended to be driven until the timing chain is replaced because the engine could be severely damaged or fail while driving. The technician refused to take the car on the freeway due to safety concerns. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware that a possible timing-chain defect or failure in 2014 Honda CR-V vehicles can present as a bounce/shudder at low speeds during acceleration, with potential loss of power and increased risk of rear-end collisions, and that this condition may be missed or misdiagnosed by dealers for an extended period.

Since this car has been purchased several times, it wouldn’t start. We thought the battery was dead. We’ve had it serviced several times while it was under warranty and at different mechanics with no avail. However, a Honda certified mechanic had told me it’s showing the same symptoms as the fuel filter recall and I just want to make y’all aware that this is happening in the 2014 as well you will be driving and then suddenly there’s no power you can’t turn the ignition to turn it back on trying to steer safely off the road is ridiculous and it’s usually on a highway. Even when you press the gas pedal to rub up the engine only once has it came back on. All the mechanics I’ve talked to said that sounds like fuel injection or fuel issue to the ignition, but they don’t seem to find a problem through the OEM reader. This has happened and all seasons so far as well. Please please please investigate some of this. I do not want to drive fearfully with this going on and I know I can’t be the only one I’ve searched it online. I love this car. It was my mother‘s car. It’s a 2014 and I just broke 100,000 miles on it.

I am the original owner of 2014 Honda CRV , color of the car is Pearl White, NH-603 PX, right after manufacturing guarantee, paint started to peel, top, back door, complete passenger side. Paint is bubbling and peeling off. I see many same issues on Honda CRV on the road. I believe this is a quality issue and if there is a defected paint, it can be other defective parts too. I called Honda dealer many times and raised this issue and answer was “there is no recall”. I went to multiple body paint centers, they all confirmed that Honda CRV Pearl White paint is defected paint, didn’t sticked to the body properly.

ENGINE
This make and model Honda with a 2.4L engine have several known defects which brings potential harm and high operational and repair costs to its owners. Honda is well aware of the engine problems but refuses to issue recalls to correct the problem. Two of the major problems are: 1. due to a design error, the engine burns excessive amounts of oil, and 2. Honda installed a defective VTC Actuator in this engine. Either problem can cause the engine to suddenly sieze/fail which could lead to serious injury or loss of life. I purchased a used 2014 Honda CR-V from a Honda dealer in 2022 with about 50,000 mi. After a short time owning the vehicle I realized that the engine was burning excessive oil (about 2 quarts every 2 to 3 weeks). When I discussed this issue with my local Honda dealer, they told me that according to a Honda Service Bulliten, my car was not losing oil at a rate that warranted repair. I've owned around 10 Hondas in my life and I've never had a car burn oil where I had to add ANY oil between oil changes. So, burning multiple quarts of oil a month is EXTREMELY UNUSUAL and should have been repaired by Honda! The 2nd problem, defective VTC Actuators, actually may be related to the 1st problem due to a constant fluctuation of the oil level, and lack of oil. The defective VTC Actuators lead to a stretched/worn Timing Chain which can cause engine failure at any time and any place. After experiencing a loud rattling coming from my engine on start-up for some time, I just had several dashboard lights come on. Running a scan on the vehicle it showed a P0341 code. I took my car to my local Honda Dealer where they informed my that I had to replace the stretched Timing Chain and failed/defective VTC Actuator at a cost of over $2600. I believe that fraud was committed by Honda from the day I purchased the vehicle as Honda was aware of both significant engine problems and did not inform us a unexpecting Buyers.

VTC Actuator Issue with part causing timing chain to stretch and throw codes. I had timing chain replaced $2300, but it was still making a noise at start up. Apparently it is the VTC Actuator/phaser, the part is bad. I can replace the part but it will continue to have issues because the Honda VTC Actuator part is defective. I am told this will cause the timing chain to continue to have issues. When it did, all of the dummy lights went on in my car, the cruise control would not work. I am told $350 to replace and to only get genuine Honda parts. If every Honda VTC Actuator for a 2014 Honda CRV is defective, why has this not been recalled?

The bill exceeds 5000 USD/- (according to the dealer). Rooster car care has quoted a 6000 USD/- for similar fixes. So far, I have already spent 550 USD/- and the repairs have failed Honda did issue a recall for 564,000 Honda CRV's made between 2007-2011 driven in salt belt states. The top of my CRV has paint faded and gone to a white powder look. There are things that a car with low miles driven carefully and taken very good car of should not be happening. There should be recalls because there are issues with timing chains and fuel system. I am scared to drive it anymore. I won't stay loyal to Honda now and I am very disappointed that they know these issues and haven't attempted to fix them.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
I was driving with my family home and my vehicle began to move from side to side in a very violent manner. When I stopped and checked my vehicle I saw that the frame where the rear suspension arm is held was completely rusted and broken, the rear tire was about to completely detach from the vehicle and luckily I was able to stop without harming the health of my son and wife, after the incident I investigated and realized that it is a fairly common problem in multiple Honda CRV models of various years and so far no mechanic shop has wanted to repair my vehicle because they say that it is a major and very expensive repair, No warning lights came on before this happened and no one has wanted to inspect the vehicle, neither the dealer nor the insurance company, as they say this is not their problem but mine.
