NHTSA investigations into the 2011 Ford Edge

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the in...

Recalls on the 2011 Ford Edge

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

MECHANICS ARE UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE DUE TO OCCURRENCES ARE INTERMITTENT. THIS IS A VERY SCARY FEELING TO NOT KNOW IF YOUR BRAKING SYSTEM WILL STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN IN MOTION. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND REVIEWED MULTIPLE BLOGS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN MULTIPLE CITIZENS EXPRESSING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS TYPE, YEAR, AND MODEL OF VEHICLE. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE FORD AND MANUFACTURERS TO THOROUGHLY RESEARCH THESE TYPE COMPLAINTS AND ISSUE A RECALL BEFORE MULTIPLE DEATHS OCCUR DUE TO VEHICLE BEING UNABLE TO STOP. FAMILY LIVES ARE AT RISK WHEN DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES THAT PRESENT THIS INTERMITTENT BRAKING PROBLEM. ADDITIONALLY, THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I HAVE HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKES WHILE IN PARK OR PUT IN NEUTRAL BEFORE PUTTING INTO DRIVE MODE. AGAIN, BRAKE PEDAL SUPPRESSED FULLY TO FLOOR STILL WILL NOT BRING VEHICLE TO COMPLETE HALT. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THIS IS A CONTINUOUS ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MONTHS IN MY CASE BUT FOR YEARS FOR OTHERS WHO OWN THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE.

ON 9/11/17 MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE DRIVING HER 2011 FORD EDGE LIMITED WITH APPROXIMATELY 80,000 MILES. A VAN HAD CUT HER OFF DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON HYW. 635 IN FARMERS BRANCH, TX AND SHE ENDED UP REAR ENDING IT. I ASKED MY WIFE WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE HOSPITAL AND THE TOLD ME THAT WHEN SHE WENT FOR THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND SHE HEARD A "SUCKING" SOUND BUT THE CAR DID NOT STOP. OUR INSURANCE COMPANY AT THE TIME (USAA) NEVER INVESTIGATED THE BRAKES AND TOTALED OUT THE CAR. I SEARCHED GOOGLE AND HAVE FOUND SIMILAR SITUATIONS INVOLVING FORD EDGE CROSSOVERS BUT FORD ONLY HAS A TSB FOR THIS ISSUE AND NOT A RECALL. I JUST RECENTLY LEARNED ABOUT THIS PROCESS AND HOPE IT WILL BE INVESTIGATED SO THAT LIVES CAN BE SAVED. LUCKILY MY WIFE ONLY SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES FROM THE AIRBAG AND OUR CHILDREN WERE STILL WITH OUR BABYSITTER.

Break Booster Break fell to the floor, slow to stop, spongy. I was able to put on my hazards and roll to safety stop. Huge risk if I was going faster or turning a curve. Dangerous to me and others to not being able to stop The problem hasn’t been taken to the shop yet as it was closed and I had the same problem in 2025 and 2023 which were confirmed and fixed with ford parts. I am suspecting it is the same issue. Even if replaced the car is likely not safe wi the this part failing 3 times in less than 4 years. No warnings or symptoms, just falls to the floor and spongy break reaction

The brake pedal sunk all the way to the floor before braking. This has happened multiple times and now there is a leak in the ABS which we are in need of a ABS pump. Was told by mechanic that this is an ongoing problem with the Ford Edges. And, the real problem is the mechanic cannot find a replacement pump for it. Multiple locations were contacted but nothing is available. My Edge is a 2011 and currently has 84,500 miles. It’s a dangerous situation when the pedal sinks to the floor before stopping. There are no ABS warnings that pop up on the dash. Need to know what Ford is doing about this.

The brake pedal does not feel right and the car continues to roll. My mechanic found that the brake pedal vacuum boosters commonly fail on this model. He repaired it and less than a year later it has failed again. I heard the air leak when pressing the pedal and the car does not stop, it continues to roll. I've had to park it because this is a safety issue. I do not want to risk my life or cause property damage. The car has less than 130,000 miles on it and no warning lights or messages come on the dash for this. This repair was over $600 but the manufacturer should fix this and make sure it's right and safe.

This issue happened back June 2025 when I make a wide turn, the car automatically go into limp mode and all the lights on the dashboard that is related to the brake system comes on, so for example, the advanced traction control sensor, the brake mode, the traction mode and the ABS mode and this is very dangerous because I realize when I am driving locally, and if I’m in the middle of a major intersection, I can be struck because I would have to immediately turn my car off turn it back on and then it will start moving again. Sometimes it takes a while for it to start moving again.

Originally when I purchased my, 2011 Ford Edge SEL 3.5L v6. I was informed upon purchasing the vehicle that the rear view camera was malfunctioning. I told the car dealer that was no big issue that I would take care of the problem. This was in around Sept 21, 2021. I did buy a new camera and replaced the malfunctioning camera. Which it worked just fine until the issued recall for the 2021 ford edge when my vehicle started showing the rear view camera unavailable. Which was weird since it worked completely fine the day before. I did a full software update to the system. The first time it said update successful. I then ended up resetting and full system factory reset and went to perform the software update to Sync3. My rear view camera has been unaffectively fixed after the problem. First arose. I did repair a faulted wire in the harness which didn't work either. I suspect that it still may be a software issue or that the business I work for is somehow blocking the signal. I work for Maple Bear Inc doing business as Instacart LLC. It does seem since the last revamping of the instacart driver platform was right around the time of the rear view camera malfunctioning. It may be a manufacturing issue as well. Either way it needs to be immediately resolved as this is a federal issue of non-compliance of vehicle safety regulations.

My 2011 Ford Edge stalled on the freeway March 1st 2025. I had purchased the car in 2019, and kept up with regular maintenance. My mechanic tells me its an issue with the "water pump" thats is connected to the timing belt, and that the engine has been flooded? Now I need to replace my engine! I looked into it and it turns out THOUSANDS of others have gone through this too. Someone needs to have this car/engine PULLED off the market.
