Owners have filed 429 complaints
about the 2020 Ford Edge with NHTSA between 2020 and 2026.
The largest single group is the transmission & drivetrain.
Across this model's run it ranks 13 of 18 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 21
Against the median year of the Ford Edge. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 54
10.5% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 63
37% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

Recalls on the 2020 Ford Edge
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 202536016,575 units in Canada
Visual System
Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image not to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the vehicle is reversing. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the SYNC software.
Recall 202101133 units in Canada
Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear drive unit was not properly filled with oil. As a result, the rear axle could seize. If this happens, the rear wheels could lock up and cause a loss of power to the wheels. Safety Risk: A rear-wheel lock up while driving could cause a loss of control that could result in a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to check the oil level in the rear drive unit. If the drive unit is filled to the minimum oil level, it will be topped up to the full level. If the oil is below the minimum level, the drive unit will be replaced.

I was driving on the highway with my husband and our dog when out of nowhere the panoramic sunroof exploded. We were traveling home and could have been in an accident when it occurred because it sounded like a gunshot hit the car. If we had not been calm during the incident, not only our lives but the lives of everyone around us could have been affected. There were no warnings about this and when we purchased the vehicle in 2023 the dealership didn’t even say anything about a possiblity of this happening. I did research after it happened to make sure there wasn’t a recall we missed and I came across lawsuits because of this.

My vehicle transmission gear selector went out I believe. While having my mechanic try to see if something was happening with transmission, the vehicle was placed into neutral and the tires started spinning as if it were in drive. The vehicle does not do the appropriate action when the gear is selected. In addition, it will not reverse when selected. When the mechanic was looking at transmission and wheels began to spin while in neutral, he was under car near front tire and injured his hand due to the vehicle not doing the appropriate action. The vehicle is available for inspection if requested. There was a prior recall on the same issue for model year up to 2019 however mine is a 2020. I have seen numerous complaints of the same issue in many online forums but ford has offered no help. They have not offered anything more on this issue except for an astronomical quote to have it tested and no actual idea on how to fix it. There were zero lights that came on regarding the issue and I had no warning while driving my vehicle that stopped and would not proceed to drive when it was driving perfectly fine right before.

The vehicle then picked back up and I made it to the stop light at the end of the road once I stopped for less than 1 minute the light turned green, I tried to go and the vehicle shut off and began to roll back I had to step on the break and the car behind me reversed so I would not hit him and then the screen flashed a turn vehicle off and restart engine I tried multiple times about 6. Cars had to go around me as I was the first at the light. I finally got the car to turn on and white smoke came out the exhaust pipes I couldn’t put the car in drive. I tried to re start the vehicle again and got it into drive and was able to pull on the side of the highway and more white smoke came out still no vehicle warning signs came on but the screen flashed dimly like it wanted to turn off again. I flagged down a fire truck and called 911 for help the fighters stated it seemed like my engine had blown out and the coolant was completely drained and may have gotten inside the engine causing the white smoke but to take it to a mechanic to verify. I had the vehicle towed to my home. On the way to work that night it drove fine with no issues or warnings, or pulling, I ran errands the day prior and no light warnings came on nor was my vehicle temperatures out of place. I even had my car serviced on [XXX] and had no issues I keep up on the maintenance I got the vehicle used from enterprise with a mileage of 52,559 on [XXX] the vehicle now has only 96,634 I’ve had the car for only a year and 4 months it should not have had an engine issue l have made a claim with my insurance hoping to get help, I’m calling enterprise for warranty information if there’s any and ford to see if there is any manufacturer warranties hoping to hear back this week. Our 2020 Ford Edge SEL has experienced ongoing shuddering and hesitation while driving. The Ford dealership inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the torque converter as the likely cause, recommending approximately $4,500 in repairs. The torque converter has not been replaced and is available for inspection. We obtained a second opinion from an independent repair shop, which replaced the EGR sensors and updated them in an attempt to resolve the issue. The problem has created a safety concern because the vehicle does not always accelerate or operate normally while driving. The exact cause remains UNKNOWN, and the issue has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives.

XXX, I parked my Edge car around 11am. I always put the car into park mode before turning off vehicle! The road was flat, good weather and had no previous issues/warnings. I went into building. My gray Ford Edge 2020 ST with 105,000. miles is a wonderful vehicle! I came out of appointment about an hour later and my Edge had rolled backwards 6 to 8 feet! It almost hit another vehicle, parked behind my car! I immediately took my car to local Ford dealership service, Baugh Ford, [XXX]. I was told I needed to pay 1500 dollars for the vehicle to be taken apart to get an estimate of what needed to be fixed? I don’t have 1500 dollars to just give to ford service for them to look online and find what other years and other Ford models have had with this exactly same safety recall! This is a HUGE safety issue and FORD DOES NOT want to fix because this is a vehicle that I paid off in 7 years, have been only driver and never been in any accidents! The vehicle hesitates, jumps, and then surges into gear when accelerating from low speed, which I believe makes it difficult and hazardous merging into traffic and other driving situations. Due to the hesitation it is unable to get up to speed very easily or quickly on busy interstate roads. The hesitation, jumping, and surging has gotten progressively worse and occurs at higher speeds now. It seems like it now does this during each gear shift. I am a longtime Ford owner I previously drove a 2001 F150 with little to no problems, it reached around 280,000 miles before it's trade in. I now have a 2020 Edge SEL 2.0 AWD and have really enjoyed this car until this problem started. It was bought in March of 2024 with 62k miles and it now has 92k. The problem initially only surfaced after the car had bene on and moving for a while and it was very subtle. I could not tell if it was engine or tranny and it was only barely noticeable. But the issue has remained and now occurs at all periods of time when being driven. I have had this vehicle inspected by multiple service centers now, both of which confirm the problem being that when shifting gears the internal parts of the transmission slip causing wear and extra heat generation, leading to the slipping and jumping. The transmission needs to either be rebuilt or replaced due to its faulty initial construction. I have been told by these mechanics that they have had to do this exact replace on many of this exact same model of car, and similarly each time they've done it the models are typically around 80,000-90,000 miles not even making it to 100,000. There were no warning lights or messages and there still aren't any even after getting it looked at twice.

The transmission has been serviced regularly. It is starting to jerk at lower speeds. I have had two auto mechanics from different shops and locations inspect the transmission. Both have found shaved metal in the transmission fluid. After a call to two different Ford dealerships, the auto mechanics were informed that it is a problem with these transmissions, but Ford has not issued a recall. If I have to replace the transmission, I will be contacting an attorney for assistance. There have been no warning lights or alarms indicating that there are problems with the transmission. Because there are no warning lights on the dashboard, it has been hard to diagnose the actual problem. Of course, I am approximately 6000 miles over the extended warranty. I own a 2020 Ford Edge ST with approximately 62,460 miles. My vehicle has developed a loud noise coming from the rear differential, particularly when turning at low speeds. On July 6, 2026, I had the vehicle inspected by my independent mechanic, Kenny's Quick Service. Ford Motor Company has not inspected my vehicle. My mechanic documented the following: "Customer has a noise in the rear of vehicle. Checked vehicle and found noise in rear differential, when turning at low speeds. Checked fluid and fluid is not at proper level, differential could possibly come apart. Differential needs to be replaced." Based on this inspection, my mechanic advised me not to continue driving the vehicle because of the condition of the rear differential. I was advised that if the differential completely fails, the vehicle could stop moving and potentially create a dangerous situation, including the possibility of an accident. The vehicle is currently not being driven because of this safety concern. This issue concerns me because Ford previously issued Safety Recall 21S02 involving certain 2020-2021 Ford Edge vehicles and a low-fluid condition in the rear drive unit. According to the recall information, inadequate lubrication could cause the rear drive unit to seize, resulting in loss of drive and/or loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash. My vehicle is a 2020 Ford Edge ST, but my VIN is not included in the 21S02 recall. Despite not being included in the recall, my independent mechanic has now diagnosed a rear differential problem involving an improper fluid level and a condition requiring replacement of the differential. The similarity between the recalled condition and the condition diagnosed in my vehicle concerns me greatly. The estimated cost to replace the rear differential has been verbally stated to be approximately $3,000 to $5,000. I have not yet received a formal written repair estimate. I have contacted Ford Motor Company regarding this issue. Ford opened
